She of Gentle Manners : An Examination of the Widow Pomeroy\u27s Table and Tea Wares and the Emerging Domestic Sphere in Kinderhook, New York

Following the American Revolution, the new gender ideologies of Republican Motherhood and the Cult of Domesticity gained in popularity that associated men with the public sphere and relegated women to the private domestic sphere. Women were now tasked with the important job of raising the future citizens of the fledgling Republic. The quality of family and home life took on extra importance, and the elaboration of meals and the ceramics used in these rituals changed accordingly. This thesis analyzes the table and tea wares from an archaeological assemblage located in upstate New York that dates to the turn of the 19th century. Based on dates derived from analysis, the archaeological assemblage was attributed to the Pomeroy family. A widow-headed household, the table and tea wares during this time period allow an understanding of how Anna Pomeroy participated in these changing gender roles and adapted to these new ideologies. Building on current theories in gender archaeology, this thesis discerns how Anna Pomeroy chose to represent herself in this new role based on her consumer choices. The table wares exhibit matched sets and elaboration of design and vessel function, all evidence of the increase of importance of the domestic realm. The tea wares contain high-end porcelains and matched sets, exhibiting how Anna used the ritual of taking tea to establish ties within the community while also putting on display her refinement of character. The practice of taking tea was often discounted as frivolous activity, but the relationships women established within these social gatherings allowed alliances to form that would have ramifications within the public sphere. In a society in which it was expected that widows remarry, Anna did not. Instead she chose to invest in the domestic visual display of the tea ceremony in order to exert her influence within community. Anna Pomeroy was able to use the accepted ideology of Republican Motherhood to negotiate her place in society and keep the independence that was afforded to her as a widow

KINETIC ANALYSIS OF AGILITY LADDERS DRILLS AND THEIR COMPARISON TO SPORT-SPECIFIC MOVEMENTS SUCH AS SHUFFLING AND SPRINTING

This study assessed agility ladder drills for the purpose of comparing kinetic characteristics of these drills to one another, and to sprinting and shuffling. Subjects (N=30) performed six agility ladder drills as well as sprinted and shuffled to the left and right over two large force platforms. A repeated measure ANOVA was used to assess horizontal and vertical ground reaction force (GRF) and the ratio of horizontal to vertical GRF, averaged from three steps for each drill. Significant main effects were found for all variables (p ≤ 0.001). Post-hoc analysis identified differences (p ≤ 0.05) between the agility drills as well as between the agility drills and the sprinting and shuffling. Results can be used to guide the progression of agility ladder drills based on known intensity and allow practitioners to prioritize drills that are most similar to sport-specific movements such as sprinting and shuffling

A Qualitative Exploration of the Mental Health and Psychosocial Contexts of HIV-Positive Adolescents in Tanzania

Although 85% of HIV-positive adolescents reside in sub-Saharan Africa, little is known about the psychosocial and mental health factors affecting their daily well-being. Identifying these contextual variables is key to development of culturally appropriate and effective interventions for this understudied and high-risk population. The purpose of this study was to identify salient psychosocial and mental health challenges confronted by HIV-positive youth in a resource-poor Tanzanian setting. A total of 24 qualitative interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of adolescents aged 12–24 receiving outpatient HIV care at a medical center in Moshi, Tanzania. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded using thematic analysis. Psychosocial challenges identified included loss of one or more parents, chronic domestic abuse, financial stressors restricting access to medical care and education, and high levels of internalized and community stigma among peers and other social contacts. Over half of youth (56%) reported difficulties coming to terms with their HIV diagnosis and espoused related feelings of self-blame. These findings highlight the urgent need to develop culturally proficient programs aimed at helping adolescents cope with these manifold challenges. Results from this study guided the development of Sauti ya Vijana (The Voice of Youth), a 10-session group mental health intervention designed to address the psychosocial and mental health needs of HIV-positive Tanzanian youth

Experiences of Women of Color with a Nurse Patient Navigation Program for Linkage and Engagement in HIV Care

Patient navigation, a patient-centered model of care coordination focused on reducing barriers to care, is an emerging strategy for linking patients to and retaining them in HIV care. The Guide to Healing Program (G2H), implemented at the Infectious Diseases Clinic at UNC Chapel Hill, provided patient navigation to women of color (WOC) new to or re-engaging in HIV care through a ‘nurse guide’ with mental health training and experience. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively explore patients' experiences working with the nurse guide. Twenty-one semi-structured telephone interviews with G2H participants were conducted. Interviews were transcribed and thematic analysis was utilized to identify patterns and themes in the data. Women's experiences with the nurse guide were overwhelmingly positive. They described the nurse guide teaching them critical information and skills, facilitating access to resources, and conveying authentic kindness and concern. The findings suggest that a properly trained nurse in this role can provide critical medical and psychosocial support in order to eliminate barriers to engagement in HIV care, and successfully facilitate patient HIV self-management. The nurse guide model represents a promising approach to patient navigation for WOC living with HIV

The Effect of Supplementing Mannan Oligosaccharide or Finely Ground Fiber, during the Summer on Body Temperature, Performance, and Blood Metabolites of Finishing Steers

Crossbred beef steers (12 pens, n=96) were used to determine the effect of adding Agrimos or 5% ground (1 in.) wheat straw compared to a control on body temperature, panting score and performance. Th ere were no differences in final BW, ADG, and DMI among treatments. Feed conversion was increased for cattle fed 5% additional ground straw when compared to control and Agrimos. Hot carcass weight, dressing %, LM area, and marbling score were not different among treatments. Cattle fed the control had greater 12th rib fat depth and USDA yield grade than cattle fed straw or Agrimos. Both average and maximum body temperatures were slightly greater for cattle fed Agrimos than for cattle fed control or added straw. Panting scores were decreased slightly for cattle fed the extra straw when compared to control and Agrimos. The addition of Agrimos or wheat straw to the diet had minimal effects on heat stress measures

In Vivo Capture and Label-Free Detection of Early Metastatic Cells

Breast cancer is a leading cause of death for women, with mortality resulting from metastasis. Metastases are often detected once tumour cells affect the function of solid organs, with a high disease burden limiting effective treatment. Here we report a method for the early detection of metastasis using an implanted scaffold to recruit and capture metastatic cells in vivo, which achieves high cell densities and reduces the tumour burden within solid organs 10-fold. Recruitment is associated with infiltration of immune cells, which include Gr1hiCD11b+cells. We identify metastatic cells in the scaffold through a label-free detection system using inverse spectroscopic optical coherence tomography, which identifies changes to nanoscale tissue architecture associated with the presence of tumour cells. For patients at risk of recurrence, scaffold implantation following completion of primary therapy has the potential to identify metastatic disease at the earliest stage, enabling initiation of therapy while the disease burden is low

A inovação aberta no processo de internacionalização de empresas: estudo de caso da Brasil Foods

Relações Internacionais.A presente monografia tem como objetivo o estudo do papel da inovação aberta no processo de internacionalização de empresas, a partir da revisão teórica dos conceitos na literatura e de um estudo de caso real de uma empresa brasileira de grande porte: a Brasil Foods. A presente pesquisa possui caráter de pesquisa exploratória. Para desenvolver o objetivo principal, o trabalho apresenta três objetivos específicos, que são: primeiro apresentar o conceito de inovação, seus graus de inserção e destacar a sua relevância no setor empresarial; segundo apresentar o conceito de inovação aberta e de inovação fechada e esclarecer a importância da difusão de informações; e, terceiro, apresentar os aspectos históricos da internacionalização de empresas, introduzindo duas teorias do processo: Modelo de Uppsala e Perspectiva de Networks. Assim, pode-se exibir, portanto, um modelo conceitual às relações entre as atividades de inovação aberta e a internacionalização de empresas em redes, levandose em consideração que a gestão de inovação nas empresas, atualmente, transcende a visão de inovação tecnológica, e, as redes internacionais ganham cada vez mais relevância como vantagem competitiva nas empresas ao atuar em mercados exteriores. Como resultado, concluiu-se que as estratégias de internacionalização de empresas em redes e as estratégias de inovação aberta, quando empregadas juntas, aumentam a velocidade de aprendizagem organizacional da Brasil Foods, acelerando os processos de internacionalização, confirmando que a inovação aberta estimula e intensifica a internacionalização de empresas que trabalham em redes
