    Thyroglossal Duct Cyst Papillary Carcinoma

    Thyroglossal duct cysts are usually located in the midline of the neck. The coexistence of carcinomas in thyroglossal duct cysts is extremely rare, with most being papillary carcinomas. Usually, the diagnosis is only made postoperatively after excision of the cyst. Although the Sistrunk procedure is often regarded as adequate, controversies exist concerning the need for thyroidectomy depending on histopathological findings. We report the case of a 31-year-old man diagnosed with papillary carcinoma within a thyroglossal duct cyst, who underwent total thyroidectomy as has been recommended for differentiated papillary cancer

    An enhanced consensus-based distributed secondary control for voltage regulation and proper current sharing in a DC islanded microgrid

    A centralized secondary control is utilized in a DC islanded microgrid to fine-tune voltage levels following the implementation of droop control. This is done to avoid conflicts between current allocation and voltage adjustments. However, because it introduces a single point of failure, a distributed secondary control is preferred. This paper introduces a consensus-based secondary distributed control approach to restore critical bus voltages to their nominal values and properly distribute current among converters. The critical bus takes the lead in voltage adjustments, with only connected energy resources contributing to regulation. The microgrid is represented as an undirected graph to facilitate consensus building. Two adjustment terms, δv and δi, are generated to assist in returning voltage to its nominal level and correctly allocating current among energy resources. To enhance consistency and improve controller performance compared to those reported in existing literature, all buses are connected to a leader node. In the event of the failure of all converters except one, voltage can still be effectively restored. MATLAB-Simulink simulations are conducted on two medium-voltage DC (MVDC) microgrids to validate the efficiency of the proposed control method. The results confirmed that the proposed control method can effectively maintain voltage stability and enhance the precise distribution of current among agents by 8%

    Arc Characteristics and a Single-Pole Auto-Reclosure Scheme for Alexandria HV Transmission System

    Abstract -Arcing faults are the most common faults that occur in the 220kV transmission line national grid of Egypt, in the vicinity of 'Alexandria' city. This part of the network also feeds a large industrial load in the form of steel works, which injects a large amount of harmonics into the network. In this paper the performance of this 220kV TL network during arcing faults is studied with the aid of the PSCAD/EMTDC program together with a specially designed arcing fault custom model incorporated in the program. Several arcing faults are simulated, and the effect of harmonics on the fault current and secondary arc duration time is demonstrated. Based upon the simulation results, recommendations regarding single-pole autoreclosing and arc suppression methods are suggested

    Antisense Phenotypes Reveal a Functional Expression of OsARF1, an Auxin Response Factor, in Transgenic Rice

    OsARF1 is the first full-length member of auxin response factor (ARF) gene family to be cloned from monocot plant. Using quantitative RT-PCR this study found that, the transcript abundance of OsARF1 was significantly higher in embryonic tissues than in vegetative tissues. To investigate the effect of OsARF1 on the phenotype of rice, a cDNA fragment of OsARF1 was inserted in inverse orientation to the 35S promoter in vector pBin438 to produce an antisense (AS) construction. The AS-OsARF1 construct was transferred into rice (Oryza sativa L. japonica ) calli via Agrobacterium tumefaciens -mediated transformation. Molecular analysis of transgenic plants showed that the functional expression of OsARF1 was inhibited at mRNA level efficiently. The AS-OsARF1 plants showed extremely low growth, poor vigor, short curled leaves and tillered but were sterile. Therefore, the OsARF1 was shown to be essential for growth in vegetative organs and seed development

    In the framework of quantum mechanics the physical nature of the photon is discussed. It is substantiated that a photon is a quantum quasiparticle, the free propagation of which must be considered taking into account the processes in a physical vacuum at Planck distances. For practical purposes on a macroscopic scale, the photon propagation can be modeled using the wave function (wave packet) normalized to the unit probability in the coordinate representation

    Biallelic loss of EMC10 leads to mild to severe intellectual disability

    The endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein complex subunit 10 (EMC10) is a highly conserved protein responsible for the post-translational insertion of tail-anchored membrane proteins into the endoplasmic reticulum in a defined topology. Two biallelic variants in EMC10 have previously been associated with a neurodevelopmental disorder. Utilizing exome sequencing and international data sharing we have identified 10 affected individuals from six independent families with five new biallelic loss-of-function and one previously reported recurrent EMC10 variants. This report expands the molecular and clinical spectrum of EMC10 deficiency, provides a comprehensive dysmorphological assessment and highlights an overlap between the clinical features of EMC10-and EMC1-related disease

    Researching shadow education: Methodological challenges and directions

    Research on shadow education has considerably increased in volume and has helped to improve understanding of the scale, nature, and implications of the phenomenon. However, the field is still in its infancy. Literature on shadow education reflects confusion over terms and parameters, and data suffer from challenges in securing evidence from actors who may be unwilling or unable to respond to enquiries in a clear manner. Particular care is needed in cross-national and cross-cultural comparisons.     Paintable Battery

    If the components of a battery, including electrodes, separator, electrolyte and the current collectors can be designed as paints and applied sequentially to build a complete battery, on any arbitrary surface, it would have significant impact on the design, implementation and integration of energy storage devices. Here, we establish a paradigm change in battery assembly by fabricating rechargeable Li-ion batteries solely by multi-step spray painting of its components on a variety of materials such as metals, glass, glazed ceramics and flexible polymer substrates. We also demonstrate the possibility of interconnected modular spray painted battery units to be coupled to energy conversion devices such as solar cells, with possibilities of building standalone energy capture-storage hybrid devices in different configurations

    From Profile to Surface Monitoring: SPC for Cylindrical Surfaces Via Gaussian Processes

    Quality of machined products is often related to the shapes of surfaces that are constrained by geometric tolerances. In this case, statistical quality monitoring should be used to quickly detect unwanted deviations from the nominal pattern. The majority of the literature has focused on statistical profile monitoring, while there is little research on surface monitoring. This paper faces the challenging task of moving from profile to surface monitoring. To this aim, different parametric approaches and control-charting procedures are presented and compared with reference to a real case study dealing with cylindrical surfaces obtained by lathe turning. In particular, a novel method presented in this paper consists of modeling the manufactured surface via Gaussian processes models and monitoring the deviations of the actual surface from the target pattern estimated in phase I. Regardless of the specific case study in this paper, the proposed approach is general and can be extended to deal with different kinds of surfaces or profiles
