    Tidal and diurnal periodicity in macrocrustaceans and demersal fish of an exposed sandy beach, with special emphasis on juvenile plaice <i>Pleuronectes platessa</i>

    Macrocrustaceans and juvenile demersal fish were sampled in spring of 1997 in the surf zone of an exposed sandy beach on the Belgian coast. Three consecutive 24 h cycles were sampled to investigate tidal, diurnal and semi-lunar distribution patterns within the epibenthic community. Multivariate statistical techniques and 3-way ANOVA were used to evaluate the effects of the environmental variables measured. The most important variable correlated with the variation in epibenthic catch density was the state of the tide (ebb and flood), but light intensity (day and night) was also important. The individual catch density of several species differed significantly over the three 24 h cycles. Despite the strong turbulent conditions of the site studied, clear tidal (e.g. the brown shrimp Crangon crangon, juvenile plaice Pleuronectes platessa) and diurnal (e.g. juvenile sole Solea solea and clupeids, caught mainly during the night/day respectively) periodicities of many macrocrustacean and demersal fish species were observed. Nevertheless, the extremely turbulent conditions of the surf zone possibly affect the behaviour of many species (e.g. juvenile brown shrimp are not able to bury themselves as the water retreats). To investigate whether the high dynamics of the surf zone suppress the ability of juvenile plaice to actively search for food, stomach contents were analysed. Also, the interaction with potential prey was investigated: the hyperbenthic fauna was sampled simultaneously and macrobenthic data were available from the literature. Clearly, the Belgian sandy beaches are used as a feeding ground by I-group plaice. An opportunistic utilisation of available food resources is suggested. I-group plaice migrate high up the beach during the flood tide to profit from the rich macrobenthic intertidal area, while the 0-group feeds mainly on the most abundant hyperand macrobenthic organisms from somewhat deeper water. The presence of the 0-group in the intertidal area is possibly linked to refuge for predators or influenced by the strong surf zone currents

    De Sitter solutions in N=4 matter coupled supergravity

    We investigate the scalar potential of gauged N=4 supergravity with matter. The extremum in the SU(1,1)/U(1) scalars is obtained for an arbitrary number of matter multiplets. The constraints on the matter scalars are solved in terms of an explicit parametrisation of an SO(6,6+n) element. For the case of six matter multiplets we discuss both compact and noncompact gauge groups. In an example involving noncompact groups and four scalars we find a potential with an absolute minimum and a positive cosmological constant.Comment: 14 page

    The towing tank experiments conducted at Yokohama National University from November 30 to December 9 in 2005 suggested a new way of suppressing a dangerous coupled motion between heave and pitch called porpoising. The research in this paper was developed on the observations made in the experiments and conducted numerical simulations to further investigate the parametric design space. Two linear-time-invariant models were developed: rigid-body planing craft (conventional float planes or flying boats), and flexibly supported planing craft. The latter could simulate the new method found in the experiments for suppressing porpoising. In this study, the stability of the oscillatory motions was analyzed to see the effect of design variables on the inception of porpoising. The parametric study of flexibly supported float planes in the context of porpoising was a new contribution in the conceptual design of seaplanes

    Plasma-assisted ALD of LiPO(N) for solid state batteries

    All solid state 3D batteries are pursued for their increased safety and high power capabilities. At present conformai coating of the solid electrolyte remains one of the key hurdles for the implementation of such devices. In the present work we investigate atomic layer deposition (ALD) as means of conformai deposition of lithium phosphate (Li3PO4) and nitrogen doped lithium phosphates (LiPON). These processes are characterized here to obtain the highest possible Li-ion conductivity. Li3PO4 is shown to yield a conductivity of 10-10 S/cm. On the other hand, an optimized LiPON process gave rise to a Li-ion conductivity of 510-7 S/cm. In addition, good conformality of the LiPON process was shown on high aspect ratio pillars. Furthermore, a solid state battery device was fabricated comprising a Li4Ti5O12 cathode, a 70 nm thick ALD LiPON solid electrolyte and a metallic lithium anode. The fabricated device is based on the thinnest solid electrolyte used so far as well as on the first ALD deposited solid electrolyte.</p

    DIMAS Development of an integrated database for the management of accidental spills. Part 2. Global change, ecosystems and biodiversity - SPSDII: final report

    DIMAS is a 2-year project executed by three Belgian partners (EURAS, VLIZ and Ghent University) and funded by the SPSD II research program of the Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO). Several shipping accidents in Belgian territorial waters, made the various government agencies involved aware of the need to develop tools to assess the risks and impact on marine resources in the case of an accidental release of hazardous substances. DIMAS aims at the protection of the North Sea and Western Scheldt in case of accidental spills from ships. In the present project, a relational database is developed, providing reliable, easy to interpret and up-to-date information on marine specific issues. The database contains the latest information on effects (acute and chronic), absorption, distribution, bioaccumulation/biomagnification, GESAMP hazard profiles and physico-chemical properties for a selection of priority substances and is publicly available (www.vliz.be/projects/dimas). The selection of the substances is based on criteria such as occurrence on priority lists, volumes transported over sea, frequency of involvement in accidental spills and frequency of transports over sea. The first beneficiaries of this database are the people directly involved in the first phase of a containment plan for an accidental spill. The final indirect beneficiaries are the general public (scientists, journalists, general public, etc.) who will be better informed about the potential impact to man and the environment

    Structural basis of a redox-dependent conformational switch that regulates the stress kinase p38α

    Many functional aspects of the protein kinase p38α have been illustrated by more than three hundred structures determined in the presence of reducing agents. These structures correspond to free forms and complexes with activators, substrates, and inhibitors. Here we report the conformation of an oxidized state with an intramolecular disulfide bond between Cys119 and Cys162 that is conserved in vertebrates. The structure of the oxidized state does not affect the conformation of the catalytic site, but alters the docking groove by partially unwinding and displacing the short αD helix due to the movement of Cys119 towards Cys162. The transition between oxidized and reduced conformations provides a mechanism for fine-tuning p38α activity as a function of redox conditions, beyond its activation loop phosphorylation. Moreover, the conformational equilibrium between these redox forms reveals an unexplored cleft for p38α inhibitor design that we describe in detail.© 2023. The Author(s)
