Objective: Cigarette smoking is a major global public health problem and increases in the prevalence of tobacco smoking is the cause premature death worldwide. Serum ferritin an intracellular protein that can store and release iron is considered to be one of the important clinical biomarkers to evaluate iron status. This study explores the effect of cigarette smoking on serum ferritin level. Methods: The study was carried out in 100 cigarette smokers and 100 nonsmokers. Results: Subjects with smoking habits showed a significant increase in the serum ferritin levels compared to nonsmokers. Serum iron level, as well as total iron-binding capacity, showed significant increase compared with nonsmokers. Serum ferritin is found to correlate with serum iron. Conclusion: This study supports the fact that cigarette smoking has adverse effect on serum ferritin and other hematologic parameters, and serum ferritin is one of the most reliable indicators of iron status

Women and Children constitute 67.7 per cent of the country’s total population as per the census 2001. Women exclusively accounted for million constituting 48.3 percent of the country’s population. By virtue of these figures, they shall be considered as an important target group. Hence, it becomes an essentiality to empower women economically and socially for promoting national development. Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) was launched as sub scheme of IRDP. It was initially started as pilot project in 50 selected districts in all states during 1982- 1983. During, the IX plan almost all state governments started implementing DWCRA activities in rural areas. The objectives of this programme are to organize women into socio-economic activity groups with the dual purpose of providing self- employment opportunities and social strength to them. Besides, providing financial support for income generating activities, DWCRA also increases women’s access to basic services of health, education, children’s nutrition, safe drinking water, sanitation and environment. Though there are many achievements to its credit, still there is wider space to accommodate many innovative ideas elicited through the participation of women over the years for improving the programme periphery. INTRODUCTION: Pediatric obesity has been considered as one of the most serious public health challenges in the world. AIM: To reduce “Screen-time” and promoting self care activities among overweight and obese pre-adolescents (aged 10-12 years) in India through proper intervention measures. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Designed as a two-armed randomized controlled trial, 537 pre-adolescents aged 10-12 years were enrolled in this online study. Data was collected through a questionnaire (containing close-ended 26 questions). Pre- adolescents, whose BMI was classified as “overweight” and “obese” were enrolled and randomly assigned (flip of coin) to the intervention group and control group. The intervention group were then given monthly online one-on-one sessions (to maintain confidentiality) by five standardized instructors. The study lasted for four months and a total of four individual sessions were provided to each child in the intervention group. Data was transferred into Excel for descriptive statistics, and analysed using SPSS version 22.0 using the paired t-test and multi variate logistic regression was applied keeping the significance value of p as 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 537 pre- adolescents met the inclusion criteria. Among them, 270(50.3%) belonged to the intervention group and 267 (49.7%) belonged to the control group. Majority of the pre- adolescents were males (59.4%). In the intervention group, there were 61.8% overweight pre-adolescents, which reduced to 42.9%, while in the control group, there were 89.5% overweight pre-adolescents, which reduced 9.8% and the difference between both the groups was observed to be significant (p=0.02). CONCLUSION: Techniques used in the intervention group led to positive outcomes like weight loss and reduced screen time among the pre-adolescents which in turn, helped reduce the global burden of disease

CORRELATION BETWEEN GLYCEMIC CONTROL AND LIPID PROFILE IN TYPE 2 DIABETIC PATIENTS: HbA1c AS AN INDIRECT INDICATOR OF DYSLIPIDEMIA

Objectives: Dyslipidemia is one of the major risk factor for cardiovascular disease in Type 2 Diabetes mellitus, characterized by elevated Total cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), Low density lipoprotein (LDL) and decreased High density lipoprotein (HDL). Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is widely used as an index of mean glycaemia, a measure of risk for the development of diabetes complications and a measure of the quality of diabetes care. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of glycemic control on lipid profile and to know utility of HbA1c as an indirect indicator of dyslipidemia. Methods: A total of 490 Type 2 Diabetes mellitus patients (males 258, females 232) mean age 53.17 years standard deviation (S.D) 10.50 were included in this study. Results: The age of type 2 diabetic patients were not significantly correlated with fasting blood glucose and HbA1c. The level of HbA1c was highly direct significant correlation with fasting blood glucose. The Age of Type 2 Diabetic patients were highly significant and inversely correlated with Total cholesterol, Triglycerides, Low-density Lipoprotein, where it was not significantly correlated with High-density Lipoprotein. The level of HbA1c was highly direct significant correlation with TC, TG, LDL, where it was not correlated with HDL.Conclusion: The findings of this study clearly showed that HbA1c is not only a reliable glycemic index but also as an indirect indicator of dyslipidemia. Keywords: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, HbA1c, Lipid profile, Dyslipidemia

    Trion resonance in polariton-electron scattering

Strong interactions between charges and light-matter coupled quasiparticles offer an intriguing prospect with applications from optoelectronics to light-induced superconductivity. Here, we investigate how the interactions between electrons and exciton-polaritons in a two-dimensional semiconductor microcavity can be resonantly enhanced due to a strong coupling to a trion, i.e., an electron-exciton bound state. We develop a microscopic theory that uses a strongly screened interaction between charges to enable the summation of all possible diagrams in the polariton-electron scattering process. The position and magnitude of the resonance is found to vary depending on the values of the light-matter coupling and detuning, thus indicating a large degree of tunability. We furthermore derive an analytic approximation of the interaction strength based on universal lowenergy scattering theory. This is found to match extremely well with our full calculation, indicating that the trion resonance is near universal, depending more on the strength of the light-matter coupling relative to the trion binding energy rather than on the details of the electronic interactions. Thus, we expect the trion resonance in polariton-electron scattering to appear in a broad range of microcavity systems with few semiconductor layers, such as doped monolayer MoSe2 where such resonances have recently been observed experimentally [Sidler et al., Nature Physics 13, 255 (2017)].Comment: 13 pages and 8 figure

Educating University students at the initial levels can improve their knowledge of environmental issues. A relevant study was conducted at the School of Allied Healthcare Sciences, Malla Reddy University, Hyderabad, India, based on a cross-sectional design. A self-administered questionnaire focused on the socio-demographics, knowledge, and attitudes of 380 students toward environmental ethics was used to collect the data and analyzed by SPSS. The findings include about 50% (N=200) of the students were found to have low knowledge scores; on the other hand, 49.2% (N = 187) of students showed a pro attitude towards environmental issues. Chi2 analysis showed that place of birth and courses undergoing (clinical/nonclinical) resulted in a notable relationship with knowledge scores. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that the place of birth (POB) (r=0.143; p=0.05) and clinical/nonclinical courses (r=0.206; p=0.05) had weak relation to knowledge score; a negative, weak correlation was found between attitude score and education levels (r= -0.105; p=0.01) of the students. The present study showed that University students had a moderate level of knowledge of the environment, and about 20% showed a negative attitude toward environmental practices. The present study suggests the need to include environmental awareness programs in corresponding curricula to improve awareness of the environment
