Meek, James A. The Gentile Mission in Old Testament Citations in Acts: Text, Hermeneutic, and Purpose. Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2005,341 pp. Study of the Old Testament in Luke-Acts has focused on the role of the Old Testament in development of Luke\u27s Christology. Explicit citations and summary statements of Old Testament teaching, however, support five main themes: the death and resurrection of Christ, eschatological blessings, judgment, rejection of the gospel by many Jews, and the inclusion of all who believe in Jesus (including Gentiles). The question Who are the people of God? is posed both by the rejection of the gospel by many Jews and the surprising acceptance of it by many Gentiles. The role of the Old Testament in developing Luke\u27s ecclesiology has received little attention. The present study examines four explicit Old Testament citations in Acts. Two are applied directly to the Gentile mission: Acts 13:47 (Isa 49:6); Acts 15:16-18 (Amos 9:11-12). Two others anticipate it: Acts 2:16-21 (Joel 3:1-5); Acts 3:25 (Gen 22:18).The study focuses on questions of text, hermeneutic, and purpose. 1. The form of the text cited is generally closer to the OG than to the MT, but the argument does not depend on distinctive readings of the OG.2. Citations are interpreted consistently with their original meaning, but are extended or transformed by a Christological hermeneutic. The variety of texts cited and prophetic themes invoked demonstrate the importance of the Old Testament in Luke\u27s understanding of Christ. 3. Luke appeals to the Old Testament as proof from prophecy. These appeals offer a window into concerns of Luke and his readers. The citations of Isa 49:6 and Amos 9:11-12 at the center of the book indicate the importance of the Gentile mission. By these citations, Luke demonstrates that an intentional mission to Gentiles was not merely the result of the rejection of the gospel by many Jews, but had always been the plan of God and has now been commanded as the necessary consequence of the accomplished work of the Messiah, Jesus. This proof, confirmed in the narrative by God\u27s evident blessing on that mission, provides the audience with confidence that Gentile believers in Jesus are full members of God’s covenant people by faith, without circumcision and the obligations of the law of Moses

Oral history interview with Barbara Meek and James Meek. The interview was conducted on October 25, 2007, by Elaine Graybill, as part of the Illinois State University Oral History Project. James Meek was a grandson of David Felmley, who was president of Illinois State Normal University for thirty years, from 1900 to 1930.https://ir.library.illinoisstate.edu/soh/1005/thumbnail.jp

Impact of nursing intervention on improving HIV, hepatitis knowledge and mental health among homeless young adults (Nyamathi et al. 2013)

    Get PDF
The subject article [1] reports on the results from a pilot study considering the impact of two interventions on improving homeless young adults’ knowledge of HIV and hepatitis, and their mental health (n=156, n=100 at follow-up, respectively. It is an important area to explore, bearing in mind the risks of HIV, hepatitis and mental distress of the homeless population, particularly the young homeless [2]

Spatial and Temporal Stability of Airglow Measured in the Meinel Band Window at 1191.3 nm

We report on the temporal and spatial fluctuations in the atmospheric brightness in the narrow band between Meinel emission lines at 1191.3 nm using an R=320 near-infrared instrument. We present the instrument design and implementation, followed by a detailed analysis of data taken over the course of a night from Table Mountain Observatory. The absolute sky brightness at this wavelength is found to be 5330 +/- 30 nW m^-2 sr^-1, consistent with previous measurements of the inter-band airglow at these wavelengths. This amplitude is larger than simple models of the continuum component of the airglow emission at these wavelengths, confirming that an extra emissive or scattering component is required to explain the observations. We perform a detailed investigation of the noise properties of the data and find no evidence for a noise component associated with temporal instability in the inter-line continuum. This result demonstrates that in several hours of ~100s integrations the noise performance of the instrument does not appear to significantly degrade from expectations, giving a proof of concept that near-IR line intensity mapping may be feasible from ground-based sites.Comment: 15 figures, submitted to PAS

An exploration of student mental health nurses’ narratives about working with service users living with HIV

This article reviews student mental health nurses’ narratives of working with service users with mental health problems and HIV. It is an explorative study including two student narratives reviewing their experiences. This study could be replicated on a larger scale to further explore students’ experiences of working with this service user grou

Mobile capture of remote points of interest using line of sight modelling

Recording points of interest using GPS whilst working in the field is an established technique in geographical fieldwork, where the user’s current position is used as the spatial reference to be captured; this is known as geo-tagging. We outline the development and evaluation of a smartphone application called Zapp that enables geo-tagging of any distant point on the visible landscape. The ability of users to log or retrieve information relating to what they can see, rather than where they are standing, allows them to record observations of points in the broader landscape scene, or to access descriptions of landscape features from any viewpoint. The application uses the compass orientation and tilt of the phone to provide data for a line of sight algorithm that intersects with a Digital Surface Model stored on the mobile device. We describe the development process and design decisions for Zapp present the results of a controlled study of the accuracy of the application, and report on the use of Zapp for a student field exercise. The studies indicate the feasibility of the approach, but also how the appropriate use of such techniques will be constrained by current levels of precision in mobile sensor technology. The broader implications for interactive query of the distant landscape and for remote data logging are discussed
