Resurrection of Ornithogalum brevipedicellatum (Asparagaceae) with morphological and molecular data

    Get PDF
This study evaluates Ornithogalum brevipedicellatum, which was previously accepted as a synonym of O. oligophyllum, as a separate distinct species and discusses the similarities and differences between O. brevipedicellatum and its related species (O. oligophyllum and O. pamphylicum). Similarities and differences among these species were identified by morphological and molecular studies. The leaf morphology and inflorescence of O. brevipedicellatum and O. pamphylicum are similar to each other, and in terms of these features, they show differences from O. oligophyllum. Some diagnostic characteristics are quite different in O. brevipedicellatum and O. pamphylicum, such as the size of tepals, length of fruiting pedicels and style. Morphological data were supported by the results obtained from molecular studies. According to a dendrogram obtained by molecular studies, O. brevipedicellatum and O. pamphylicum are similar. O. oligophyllum is more closely related to O. pyrenaicum used as an out-group. Additionally, the seeds of O. brevipedicellatum were examined with the use of scanning electron microscopy

Göreme National Park is located on about 12 km north of Nevşehir province, in Central Anatolia. The national park has 675 taxa at specific and infraspecific levels. A total number of 80 taxa (11.8 %) are endemic to Turkey. The plants in the park have showy flowers with various colors. Also, fruit and leaf shapes can be used effectively in landscape areas for a various designs purposes. In this paper, selected plants recommended for landscaping are given with their pictures, general information and aesthetic uses

In this study, the fatty acid, tocopherol, tocotrienol and plastochromanol-8 contents of some selected Fabaceae (Leguminosae) species belonging to different genera (Colutea, Vicia, Lathyrus, Gonocytisus, Lupinus, Hedysarum, Onobrychis, Trigonella) from Turkey were determined by using GLC and HPLC techniques. Some of the studied species are endemic to Turkey. The seed oils of different Leguminous taxa contained linoleic, oleic and linolenic acids as their major components. The ratios of these fatty acids in the Leguminous genera were found to be highly variable. Palmitic and stearic acids are the major saturated fatty acids in the seed oils. Vicia and Onobrychis patterns showed high similarity in means of qualitative fatty acid concentration. The tocopherol and tocochromanol patterns of the seed oils were also found to be highly variable among the genera investigated here. The total tocopherols was higher than the total tocotrienols. Alpha and gamma tocopherols were also the highest tocopherols present in the whole species. Beta, gamma and delta-tocotrienols were not found in most of the studied leguminous patterns. The results are discussed in view of renewable sources and chemotaxonomy.

Pilot study for an assessment of vegetation structure for steppe rangelands of Central Anatolia

    Get PDF
In the last 50 years, rangelands in the Central Anatolian Region of Turkey have been converted to cropping lands, which has negatively accelerated vegetation change. resulting in overgrazing and poor condition and productivity. In these steppe rangelands, to develop a rational basis for making restoration and management decisions. the vegetation structure must be well understood. Thus. the objectives of this study were to: (1) define vegetation patterns through assessing spatial distribution of the plant species and groups, (2) evaluate the relationships between vegetation and environmental aspects and range condition, and (3) outline possible restoration implementations. Therefore, a study was carried out in Pasah village rangelands of Nevsehir province in 2004. Thirty-seven sites in 733 ha range area were surveyed, and 78 plant species were identified. Most of the identified species were forbs (60), followed by grasses (11) and shrubs (7). The major range species were Thymus sipyleus (7.2%). Festuca valesiaca (6.9%). and Bromus tomentellus (6.4%). Range condition scores fell between 1.20 to 3.40, representing very poor to poor condition. The positive relation of Bromus tomentellus cover. as an enviable perennial grass, with the range condition score (P < 0.001) can pave the way for the condition improvement. Our classification result displayed several groups of species, although there were not many environmental differences, indicating that the groupings are most likely to have occurred due to the spatially-varying grazing intensity. In order to increase the proportion of desirable species in this over-grazed rangeland, the implementation of deferment grazing especially until after seed setting should be essential.Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Turkish RepublicWe are grateful to the staffs of the Nevsehir Provincial Agriculture Directorate, who assisted with vegetation surveys. The authors wish to thank to Mustafa Tas and Gurol Cetin for their kind help and to Mr. Oztekin Urla for providing the satellite image of the study area and to Prof. Dr. Ahmet Gokkus for his contributions in the determination of plant quality values. This study was funded by the Range Fund of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Turkish Republic

The northern and western parts of Kısır mountain are within the boundary of the Çıldır district (Ardahan), the southern part is within the boundary of Susuz and the eastern and southeastern parts are within the boundary of Arpaçay (Kars). Kısır Dağı is the highest part of Northeastern Anatolia (3200 m) and it is the transional zone between Irano-Turanian and Euro-Siberian phytogeographically. The area is under the effect of continental climate. The field study was carried out between 2000–2003. Five vegetation types belong to steppic, wet meadow, alpine, marshy (hydrophytic) and shrubby occur in the different parts of mountain. 22 plant associations were found in the area. All association were described and classified according to the Braun-Blanquet method. All of them new to science.
