Anomalous roughening of wood fractured surfaces
Scaling properties of wood fractured surfaces are obtained from samples of
three different sizes. Two different woods are studied: Norway spruce and
Maritime pine. Fracture surfaces are shown to display an anomalous dynamic
scaling of the crack roughness. This anomalous scaling behavior involves the
existence of two different and independent roughness exponents. We determine
the local roughness exponents to be 0.87 for spruce and 0.88
for pine. These results are consistent with the conjecture of a universal local
roughness exponent. The global roughness exponent is different for both woods,
= 1.60 for spruce and = 1.35 for pine. We argue that the global

Fracture analysis of optical fibers
The fracture markings on glass optical fiber surfaces are quantitatively related to the strength and time under load. Knowledge of the fracture-initiating defects and the surrounding topography pinpoints the source of failure, aids in troubleshooting, and improves production procedures. It is shown that the techniques of fracture surface analysis help analyze in-service failures as well as improve fiber optic production control

Effects of Particulate Debris Morphology on the Rolling Wear Behavior of All-Steel and Si(Sub 3)N(Sub 4)-Steel Bearing Element Couples
Rolling contact fatigue experiments were performed on all-steel and hybrid Si{sub 3}N{sub 4}-M50 steel rolling bearing systems using particulate contaminated lubricants. The particulate contaminants used were glycothermally synthesized {alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} platelets or Arizona test dust. The effects of contaminant composition and morphology on rolling contact fatigue and wear behavior were explored. The effects of bearing element material properties on fatigue and wear behavior were also examined. Rolling wear behavior is related to bearing component material configuration and the type of particulate contaminant present in the lubricant. Component and particulate material properties such as hardness and elastic modulus are observed to affect rolling wear behavior. Wear mechanisms such as contact stress fatigue, indenting, cutting and plowing are observed
