The Mangrove Diamondback Terrapin, (Malaclemys terrapin rhizophorarum) is dependent on a very broad array of the services provided by the mangrove ecosystem. We sought to evaluate both the turtles and their habitat by an integrated assessment of physical, chemical, and physiological parameters. Extreme site fidelity of the turtles to mangrove habitat was evident along with a strong female biased sex ratio. We provide blood serum values and microbial cultures as baselines from these turtles in the wild. Salmonella sp., a potentially zoonotic pathogen, was isolated from one female. Ultimately, the health of these turtle populations may be reflective of the integrity of the mangrove system on which they depend

    Élan Vital

My art explores the inner qualities of life, focusing on adaptability and resiliency. I am interested in the mysterious vital force philosophers call élan vital that animates human beings. I investigate the transitory nature of life where it intersects with élan vital. My paintings accommodate the ephemeral and the perpetual. Dietetic pre-registration training includes placements within a healthcare setting. In 2011, King’s College London and London Metropolitan University updated the placement programme with learning outcomes and assessment tools, based on the Nutrition and Dietetic Care Process (NDCP). Over a two year period (2012-2014), students completed a questionnaire post their second placement, measuring their confidence with the NDCP in clinical practice and reporting the hours they spent on placement assessment tools. Fifty-three students met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-two students (42%) had completed the new-style placement, P2, and thirty-one (58%) the old-style placement, PB. Students’ median confidence level score for undertaking nutritional assessment tasks for patient care (step 1 of NDCP) was significantly statistically higher in the group that had completed P2 (5.0; very confident) than the PB group (4.0; confident), U = 464, z = 2.545, p = .011. The median hours-spent score was significantly statistically higher for PB students (3.0 equates to 1-2 hours) than P2 (2.0 equates to up to 1 hour), U = 205.5, z = -2.546, p = .011. The use of a care process model (NDCP) introduced at university to structure placement learning outcomes and assessment tools, is effective at preparing students to provide dietetic care. The reduced amount of paperwork required to demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes, decreases learner burden and shortens working hours. Further research, and placement assessment tools modification, are recommended to improve the student learning experience while reducing paperwork burden for learners and practice educators

EFFECT OF DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION ON ENERGY EXPENDITURE AND ENJOYMENT IN SEVERELY OVERWEIGHT CHILDREN COMPARED TO ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF ACTIVITY

    Get PDF
Dance, Dance Revolution (DDR) is an innovative product that combines the popularity of video games with a dance activity component. DDR has the potential to be an activity that results in sufficient energy expenditure (EE) and one children will find enjoyable. Research is necessary to quantify and provide more adequate data on the EE of DDR. In addition, to date there are no published data on the enjoyment of DDR. PURPOSE: To examine the EE and enjoyment of a single bout of DDR in severely overweight children compared to alternative forms of physical activity. METHODS: Twenty severely overweight (body mass percentile for age and sex = 98.3±0.86%) children (10 boys and 10 girls) between 9 and 12 years of age (10.6+1.23 years) performed experimental trials for three separate modes of activity; treadmill walking, in-home walking video, and DDR. Each testing session consisted of a single activity bout that was 15 minutes in duration. EE was assessed using indirect calorimetry with data summed over the 15 minute activity session. Perceived enjoyment was assessed immediately after each testing session using the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale. RESULTS: No significant differences were found for EE (p=0.115) among modes of activity. Separate comparisons revealed DDR elicited a statistically lower EE than the walk video (70.84+16.58 vs. 60.65+15.95 kcal; p=0.010) and a non-statistically lower EE than the treadmill walk (78.0±34.42 vs. 62.30±15.53 kcal; p=0.093). Significant differences were found for enjoyment (p=0.598) among mode of activity. DDR elicited a higher level of enjoyment than the treadmill walk and walk video (71.45+10.72 vs. 64.25+9.71 vs. 66.75+11.85; p=001). No gender effect was observed for EE (p=0.446) or enjoyment (p=0.468) across modes of activity. CONCLUSIONS: The present investigation was the first to investigate the EE and enjoyment of DDR in severely overweight children. It was also the first to compare the EE and enjoyment of DDR to alternate forms of activity. Thus, future research should further investigate the EE and enjoyment of DDR and how this compares to alternate forms of activity. Findings from such research may assist in further understanding how interactive video games such as DDR may be successfully used in interventions to promote physical activity in children

Revelatory Texts and Moral Lives: Reinterpreting the Specificity of Christian Morality Through a Ricoeurian Hermeneutic

This thesis will attempt to show how the work of the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur can help to move discussions about the specificity of Christian morality beyond the search for specifically Christian norms and principles to emphasise the importance of the biblical narrative in answering the ‘Who?’ of personal identity. It will also show how Ricoeur’s work is useful in determining how the Bible can help to deepen our understanding of the virtues by providing us with paradigmatic examples of what virtuous behaviour looks like. It will be argued that the similarities between a Ricoeurian interpretation of the Glaubensethik/Autonomy debate and currents trends in virtue ethics and spirituality make it an attractive alternative to the search for specifically Christian norms and values. The key to understanding Christian morality is not to be found in a search for norms and principles but in the particular way the Christian community understands itself. Stories and practices supplement ethics with the kind of personalism that was lacking in traditional moral theology. The study will further demonstrate that Ricoeur’s understanding of history and tradition can provide a way of answering to the respective concerns of the Autonomy and Glaubensethik schools vis-à-vis tradition without showing a bias towards one or the other. Later sections will show how Ricoeur’s work can provide us with a model for understanding how Christians can dialogue with the rest of world without being forced to abandon the narrative that continues to shape their lives

Reproductive ecology of the burrowing owl, Athene cunicularia floridana, in Dade and Broward Counties, Florida

    Get PDF
From 1988 to 1990 a study of the reproductive ecology of the burrowing owl was conducted to determine seasonality and reproductive success in Dade and Broward Counties. Reproductive data for each of the three years (1988- 1990) reveal a higher reproductive success rate (54%) for 1990 than 1989 (40%) and 1988 (40%). Owls using previously used burrows had a higher success in fledging young (63%) than newly excavated burrows (19%). T-tests were conducted on several appendage measurements of male and female owls to determine sexual dimorphic traits. Metatarsus lengths of males and females were different (t=2.36, p=0.02). As of 1990,197 owls had been banded in the study area. In 1989, 75% and in 1990, 83% of the banded adults were found on the same territory. Only 4 of 129 banded nestlings have been reencountered in the study sites
