    Bycatch and strandings programs as ecological indicators for data-limited cetaceans

    An integrated approach of using strandings and bycatch data may provide an indicator of long-term trends for data-limited cetaceans. Strandings programs can give a faithful representation of the species composition of cetacean assemblages, while standardised bycatch rates can provide a measure of relative abundance. Comparing the two datasets may also facilitate managing impacts by understanding which species, sex or sizes are the most vulnerable to interactions with fisheries gear. Here we apply this approach to two long-term datasets in East Australia, bycatch in the Queensland Shark Control Program QSCP, 1992–2012) and strandings in the Queensland Marine Wildlife Strandings and Mortality Program StrandNet, 1996–2012). Short-beaked common dolphins, Delphinus delphis, were markedly more frequent in bycatch than in the strandings dataset, suggesting that they are more prone to being incidentally caught than other cetacean species in the region. The reverse was true for humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae, bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops spp.; and species predominantly found in offshore waters. QSCP bycatch was strongly skewed towards females for short-beaked common dolphins, and towards smaller sizes for Australian humpback dolphins, Sousa sahulensis. Overall, both datasets demonstrated similar seasonality and a similar long-term increase from 1996 until 2008. Analysis on a species-by-species basis was then used to explore potential explanations for long-term trends, which ranged from a recovering stock (humpback whales) to a shift in habitat use (short-beaked common dolphins)

    The objective of this report is to provide an overview of the present StrandNet program and suggest how it might be improved to enable the StrandNet database to function as a central component of the megafauna component of the Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program (RIMReP). The report results from a cross-sectoral, expert workshop held in Brisbane on 11 June 2018 and attended by personnel from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Queensland government departments of Environment and Science and Agriculture and Fisheries, James Cook University and the University of Queensland, plus subsequent input from some of the workshop attendees

    Queensland SharkSmart Drone Trial Final Report

    Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, commonly called drones, provide a high-definition aerial view of a wide expanse of ocean, allowing the detection of potentially dangerous sharks in real-time, whilst having a negligible impact on the environment and non-target species. In addition, they are capable of spotting a range of marine hazards and can assist in beach rescue operations, thus providing numerous safety benefits for water users. The beaches of South-East Queensland (SEQ) have relatively good water clarity and a high level of visitation, making them an ideal location to test drones for detecting sharks and improving the safety of water users (Cardno, 2019). North Queensland beaches typically have lower water clarity, although it is important to test drones under these conditions to assess whether they can be effective at detecting sharks. The Queensland SharkSmart drone trial commenced on 19 September 2020, as a partnership between the Queensland Government Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) and Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ). The trial was part of the Queensland Government’s commitment to research and trialling alternatives to traditional shark control measures. Drones were operated at two beaches on the Sunshine Coast (Alexandra Headland and Coolum North), two beaches on the Gold Coast (Southport Main Beach and Burleigh Beach) and one beach on North Stradbroke Island (NSI; Ocean beach) between 19 September 2020 and 4 October 2021. Additionally, to assess the effectiveness of drones at detecting sharks under the different environmental conditions found at North Queensland (NQ) beaches, drones were operated at Palm Cove, Cairns and Alma Bay, Magnetic Island, from 26 June 2021 to 31 October 2021. Drones were operated on weekends, public holidays and school holidays by SLSQ pilots, with two flights per hour from approximately 8am until midday. Flights lasted 15 - 20 minutes and followed a 400 m transect behind the surf break. All footage was collected in 4K and securely archived for later analysis with key operational and environmental data collected for every flight. When a shark was sighted, the drone pilot lowered the aircraft to determine the species and size while estimating distance of the animal from water users. Data analysis quantified the numbers of sharks sighted at each beach and the rate of sightings as a percentage across the whole trial from 19 September 2020 to 31 October 2021. Generalised Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) were applied to quantify the influence of environmental and operational factors on the sightability (probability of a shark being sighted) of sharks. The movement tracks of sharks were mapped to analyse their behaviour and identify if there was clustering of movements in certain areas. Sighting rates from drones were also compared with shark catch in adjacent nets and drumlines deployed as part of the Queensland Shark Control Program (SCP)

    Dissociable contributions of the prefrontal cortex in group-based cooperation

The success of our political institutions, environmental stewardship and evolutionary fitness all hinge on our ability to prioritize collective-interest over self-interest. Despite considerable interest in the neuro-cognitive processes that underlie group cooperation, the evidence to date is inconsistent. Several papers support models of prosocial restraint, while more recent work supports models of prosocial intuition.We evaluate these competing models using a sample of lesion patients with damage to brain regions previously implicated in intuition and deliberation. Compared to matched control participants (brain damaged and healthy controls), we found that patients with dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) damage were less likely to cooperate in a modified public goods game, whereas patients with ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) damage were more likely to cooperate. In contrast, we observed no association between cooperation and amygdala damage relative to controls. These findings suggest that the dlPFC, rather than the vmPFC or amygdala, plays a necessary role in groupbased cooperation. These findings suggest cooperation does not solely rely on intuitive processes. Implications for models of group cooperation are discussed

    Using candidacy theory to explore unemployed over-50s perceptions of suitability of a welfare to work programme: a longitudinal qualitative study

    Welfare to work interventions seek to move out‐of‐work individuals from claiming unemployment benefits towards paid work. However, previous research has highlighted that for over‐50s, particularly those with chronic health conditions, participation in such activities are less likely to result in a return to work. Using longitudinal semi‐structured interviews, we followed 26 over‐50s during their experience of a mandated welfare to work intervention (the Work Programme) in the United Kingdom. Focusing on their perception of suitability, we utilise and adapt Candidacy Theory to explore how previous experiences of work, health, and interaction with staff (both in the intervention, and with healthcare practitioners) influence these perceptions. Despite many participants acknowledging the benefit of work, many described a pessimism regarding their own ability to return to work in the future, and therefore their lack of suitability for this intervention. This was particularly felt by those with chronic health conditions, who reflected on difficulties with managing their conditions (e.g., attending appointments, adhering to treatment regimens). By adapting Candidacy Theory, we highlighted the ways that mandatory intervention was navigated by all the participants, and how some discussed attempts to remove themselves from this intervention. We also discuss the role played by decision makers such as employment‐support staff and healthcare practitioners in supporting or contesting these feelings. Findings suggest that greater effort is required by policy makers to understand the lived experience of chronic illness in terms of ability to RTW, and the importance of inter‐agency work in shaping perceptions of those involved

    Monitoring whales within the Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program: final report of the whales team in the megafauna expert group

    Two species of great whales are commonly encountered on a seasonal basis in the Reef, the humpback, Megaptera novaeangliae, and the dwarf minke, Balaenoptera acutorostrata subsp. This report focuses on these two species, acknowledging that many other large and migratory whales utilise the Reef. Other limitations of this report include spatial and jurisdictional boundaries (i.e. a focus on specific information needs for agencies responsible for protection and management of values within the World Heritage Area). We acknowledge the need for more research to improve our overall understanding of these whale populations (e.g. stock structure and population connectivity through the south Pacific and Southern oceans), and the significance of risks to them through their extended habitat and range outside the World Heritage Area.An accessible copy of this report is not yet available from this repository, please contact [email protected] for more information

    Exploring the origin of high optical absorption in conjugated polymers

    The specific optical absorption of an organic semiconductor is critical to the performance of organic optoelectronic devices. For example, higher light-harvesting efficiency can lead to higher photocurrent in solar cells that are limited by sub-optimal electrical transport. Here, we compare over 40 conjugated polymers, and find that many different chemical structures share an apparent maximum in their extinction coefficients. However, a diketopyrrolopyrrole-thienothiophene copolymer shows remarkably high optical absorption at relatively low photon energies. By investigating its backbone structure and conformation with measurements and quantum chemical calculations, we find that the high optical absorption can be explained by the high persistence length of the polymer. Accordingly, we demonstrate high absorption in other polymers with high theoretical persistence length. Visible light harvesting may be enhanced in other conjugated polymers through judicious design of the structure

    Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis in APECED or thymoma patients correlates with autoimmunity to Th17-associated cytokines

    Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) is frequently associated with T cell immunodeficiencies. Specifically, the proinflammatory IL-17A–producing Th17 subset is implicated in protection against fungi at epithelial surfaces. In autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis ectodermal dystrophy (APECED, or autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome 1), CMC is often the first sign, but the underlying immunodeficiency is a long-standing puzzle. In contrast, the subsequent endocrine features are clearly autoimmune, resulting from defects in thymic self-tolerance induction caused by mutations in the autoimmune regulator (AIRE). We report severely reduced IL-17F and IL-22 responses to both Candida albicans antigens and polyclonal stimulation in APECED patients with CMC. Surprisingly, these reductions are strongly associated with neutralizing autoantibodies to IL-17F and IL-22, whereas responses were normal and autoantibodies infrequent in APECED patients without CMC. Our multicenter survey revealed neutralizing autoantibodies against IL-17A (41%), IL-17F (75%), and/ or IL-22 (91%) in >150 APECED patients, especially those with CMC. We independently found autoantibodies against these Th17-produced cytokines in rare thymoma patients with CMC. The autoantibodies preceded the CMC in all informative cases. We conclude that IL-22 and IL-17F are key natural defenders against CMC and that the immunodeficiency underlying CMC in both patient groups has an autoimmune basis
