Video Self-reflection and Coach Development in New Zealand
Drawing on data from semi-structured interviews with New Zealand
coaches (N = 6), this study examined how video self-reflection (VSR)
was perceived as a tool for learning within âon-goingâ coach
development. This study also looked to determine the potential
barriers experienced by coaches before engaging in VSR. Each
participant was a performance coach (as identified by the NZ
coach development framework (CDF)) with 5+ years coaching
experience and had recently (in the previous 12 months)
participated in a coach development program that aligned with
Sport NZâs CDF. Five main themes emerged from the data;
coaches had a positive perception of the benefits of VSR, a desire
to engage in VSR but did not prioritise the time, logistical
concerns, a fear of self-confrontation and evidence of knowledge
for âmodernâ coaching development. Findings indicated that
coaches valued VSR as a tool for learning; however, the lack of
exposure and experience in the process meant coaches did not
value the practise enough to dedicate specific time towards it.
This study provides an evidence-base that can be used to support
National Governing Bodies coach development frameworks, and
the modification of content to encourage the use of VSR as a tool
for learning
The prevalence of medical reasons for non-participation in the Scottish breast and bowel cancer screening programmes
Objective: Increasing uptake of cancer screening is a priority for health systems internationally, however, some patients may not attend because they are undergoing active treatment for the cancer of interest or have other medical reasons that mean participation would be inappropriate. This study aims to quantify the proportion of non-participants who have a medical reason for not attending cancer screening.<p></p>
Methods: Medical reasons for not participating in breast and bowel screening were defined a priori on the basis of a literature review and expert opinion. The notes of 700 patients at two GP practices in Scotland were reviewed, to ascertain the prevalence of medical reasons amongst non-participants. Simple proportions and confidence intervals were calculated.<p></p>
Results: 17.4% of breast and 2.3% of bowel screening non-participants had a medical reason to not participate. The two most common reasons were previous breast cancer follow up (8.86%) and recent mammogram (6.57%).<p></p>
Conclusion: These patients may not benefit from screening while also being distressed by receiving an invitation. This issue also makes accurate monitoring and target-setting for improving uptake difficult. Further work is needed to estimate robustly the extent to which medical reasons account for screening non-participation in a larger population.<p></p>
Direct interelectrode tunneling in GaSe
Using thin films of the layer compound gallium selenide, we have fabricated experimental structures which are nearly ideal for the study of tunneling currents. All of the parameters relevant to current flow in these structures can be independently determined since single-crystal gallium selenide films have the properties of the bulk material and also well-defined interfaces. A new analytical technique for determining the energy-momentum dispersion relation within the forbidden gap of a solid is discussed and applied to current-voltage data obtained from metal-GaSe-metal structures. The resulting E-k relation is shown to be an intrinsic property of GaSe. Tunneling currents in GaSe are shown to be quantitatively understood in terms of this E-k relation, the geometry of a given structure, and a simple model of current flow via tunneling
Contact-limited currents in metal-insulator-metal structures
The physical mechanisms underlying current flow in solid-state MIM structures are reviewed with emphasis on criteria for determining the dominant conduction mechanism in a given experimental situation. Measurements of the bias and temperature dependence of currents through structures incorporating a thin film of single-crystal gallium selenide are reported, and are shown to be in excellent agreement with the predictions of a simple physical model of contact-limited emission. Independently measured properties of bulk single-crystal gallium selenide are used in all calculations; no adjustable parameters are employed. We believe that this study presents unequivocal evidence for contact-limited thermionic currents in solid-state MIM structures
ASPIRE-2-PREVENT: a survey of lifestyle, risk factor management and cardioprotective medication in patients with coronary heart disease and people at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the UK.
OBJECTIVE: To determine in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and people at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) whether the Joint British Societies' guidelines on CVD prevention (JBS2) are followed in everyday clinical practice. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken of medical records and patient interviews and examinations at least 6 months after the recruiting event or diagnosis using standardised instruments and a central laboratory for measurement of lipids and glucose. SETTINGS: The ASPIRE-2-PREVENT survey was undertaken in 19 randomly selected hospitals and 19 randomly selected general practices in 12 geographical regions in England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. PATIENTS: In hospitals, 1474 consecutive patients with CHD were identified and 676 (25.6% women) were interviewed. In general practice, 943 people at high CVD risk were identified and 446 (46.5% women) were interviewed. RESULTS: The prevalence of risk factors in patients with CHD and high-risk individuals was, respectively: smoking 14.1%, 13.3%; obesity 38%, 50.2%; not reaching physical activity target 83.3%, 85.4%; blood pressure â„130/80 mm Hg (patients with CHD and self-reported diabetes) or â„140/85 mm Hg (high-risk individuals) 46.9%, 51.3%; total cholesterol â„4 mmol/l 52.6%, 78.7%; and diabetes 17.8%, 43.8%. CONCLUSIONS: The potential among patients with CHD and individuals at high risk of developing CVD in the UK to achieve the JBS2 lifestyle and risk factor targets is considerable. CVD prevention needs a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach, addressing all aspects of lifestyle and risk factor management. The challenge is to engage and motivate cardiologists, physicians and other health professionals to routinely practice high quality preventive cardiology in a healthcare system which must invest in prevention
Renormalization in Nonrelativistic Quantum Mechanics
The importance and usefulness of renormalization are emphasized in
nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. The momentum space treatment of both
two-body bound state and scattering problems involving some potentials singular
at the origin exhibits ultraviolet divergence. The use of renormalization
techniques in these problems leads to finite converged results for both the
exact and perturbative solutions. The renormalization procedure is carried out
for the quantum two-body problem in different partial waves for a minimal
potential possessing only the threshold behavior and no form factors. The
renormalized perturbative and exact solutions for this problem are found to be
consistent with each other. The useful role of the renormalization group
equations for this problem is also pointed out.Comment: 16 page
Born-Oppenheimer Approximation near Level Crossing
We consider the Born-Oppenheimer problem near conical intersection in two
dimensions. For energies close to the crossing energy we describe the wave
function near an isotropic crossing and show that it is related to generalized
hypergeometric functions 0F3. This function is to a conical intersection what
the Airy function is to a classical turning point. As an application we

The regulated four parameter one dimensional point interaction
The general four parameter point interaction in one dimensional quantum
mechanics is regulated. It allows the exact solution, but not the perturbative
one. We conjecture that this is due to the interaction not being asymptotically
free. We then propose a different breakup of unperturbed theory and
interaction, which now is asymptotically free but leads to the same physics.
The corresponding regulated potential can be solved both exactly and

The Born Oppenheimer wave function near level crossing
The standard Born Oppenheimer theory does not give an accurate description of
the wave function near points of level crossing. We give such a description
near an isotropic conic crossing, for energies close to the crossing energy.
This leads to the study of two coupled second order ordinary differential
equations whose solution is described in terms of the generalized
hypergeometric functions of the kind 0F3(;a,b,c;z). We find that, at low
angular momenta, the mixing due to crossing is surprisingly large, scaling like
\mu^(1/6), where \mu is the electron to nuclear mass ratio.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure
Faking like a woman? Towards an interpretative theorization of sexual pleasure.
This article explores the possibility of developing a feminist approach to gendered and sexual embodiment which is rooted in the pragmatist/interactionist tradition derived from G.H. Mead, but which in turn develops this perspective by inflecting it through more recent feminist thinking. In so doing we seek to rebalance some of the rather abstract work on gender and embodiment by focusing on an instance of 'heterosexual' everyday/night life - the production of the female orgasm. Through engaging with feminist and interactionist work, we develop an approach to embodied sexual pleasure that emphasizes the sociality of sexual practices and of reflexive sexual selves. We argue that sexual practices and experiences must be understood in social context, taking account of the situatedness of sex as well as wider socio-cultural processes the production of sexual desire and sexual pleasure (or their non-production) always entails interpretive, interactional processes
