Pedophilia: a Psychiatric Disorder or a Perverse Sexual Orientation? A Critical Study of Vladimir Nobokovas Lolita

    Get PDF
There are debates whether Pedophilia a universal psycho-social problem is a psychiatric disorder or a perverse sexual orientation Though a few number of pedophilia supporting groups argue that having sexual interests in children is merely a sexual orientation or fantasy but this paper explores further in analyzing different psychological insights of pedophiles especially in the contexts of Vladimir Nobokov s novel Lolita 1955 and its film adaptation of 1962 This paper gives a critical analysis of the views and practices of pedophilia in the contemporary world In addition to that this paper explores the binary opposite characters of Humbert and Clare Quilty to determine whether pedophilia is their sexual orientation or they are perverts who are only sexually attracted to young girls Apart from analyzing this perverse sexual practice this paper also discusses the established notions of pedophilia re de-constructs them and gives an elaborate discussion on this taboo topic from theoretical points of view In doing so this paper employs critical commentaries based on a number of established theories like Michel Foucault s theories on Sexuality Sigmund Freud s psychoanalysis and Laura Mulvey s envision of scopophili

Numerical solutions of a class of second order boundary value problems on using Bernoulli Polynomials

The aim of this paper is to find the numerical solutions of the second order linear and nonlinear differential equations with Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. We use the Bernoulli polynomials as linear combination to the approximate solutions of 2nd order boundary value problems. Here the Bernoulli polynomials over the interval [0, 1] are chosen as trial functions so that care has been taken to satisfy the corresponding homogeneous form of the Dirichlet boundary conditions in the Galerkin weighted residual method. In addition to that the given differential equation over arbitrary finite domain [a, b] and the boundary conditions are converted into its equivalent form over the interval [0, 1]. All the formulas are verified by considering numerical examples. The approximate solutions are compared with the exact solutions, and also with the solutions of the existing methods. A reliable good accuracy is obtained in all cases.Comment: 6 table

Study on Impact of Development Works or Edge Effect to the Floral Diversity of Dhanmondi Lake, Dhaka, Bangladesh

    Get PDF
The study was conducted over a period of one month concentrated Dhanmondi Lake, Dhanmondi, Dhaka. The study also focused on impact on development works and edge effect to the floral diversity & micro climate in Dhanmondi Lake. The duration of the sunlight almost 14 hours daylight during the study period and there was little variation in temperature near and 10meter distance from path ways.  Only 0.7 (º C) differences were observed at 10cm below the ground inside the lake. Quadrats that were away from the path had a higher DS value demonstrating lower floral diversity compared to that of the quadrats near the path. Results revealed that the Ds value near to pathway was 0.2608 and 0.7481 for 10 meter distance for all species from the pathway

Alternative Energy Sources for Energy Crisis: Rethinking the Global and Bangladesh Perspectives

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the evolution of various energy resources, their reserves, and usages for policy makers and energy experts. It finds that there is a huge supply-side deficit to meet the demand of the 7 billion people in today's world. To meet this huge energy needs, alternative energy sources are investigated and suggestions are made to address energy crises in Bangladesh and global contexts. The author argues that with the advancement of technology, a completely new nuclear meaning thorium reactors, small modular reactors, and novel solar technologies can offer potential alternatives to meet the needs of mankind. In addition, developing cost-effective carbon capture storage devices to catch carbon at its generating sources, energy storage devices, and energy culture model can be explored. The search for alternative technologies and energy culture require robust discussion, cooperation, and investment in clean energy sources. The paper concludes with a discussion of future energy policy and appropriate action plans to adopt emerging alternative technologies as per the promises made at the Paris Climate Change Accord COP21

Economic Service Life of RC Structure Based on Corrosion Initiation Time

    Get PDF
Target service life of the structure specified by the codes and standards for RC infrastructures has failed to achieve due to uncertainties at the time of construction of structure and at exposure to real environment. Moreover, the more resistivity of the cover concrete, the larger is the service life and thus higher is the cost incurred by the owner. Therefore, economic service life (ESL) has more value than considering engineering service life, where both the failure and the cost consider parallel in the prediction of service life.A statistical model to determine the time to initiate corrosion due to chloride attack to the RC member and subsequent repair considering all costs incorporated is taken into account in this research. Cost minimization model is used to calculate economic service life where initial cost, repair cost and gain from revenue for the structure are paid attention. Further, a correlation between corrosion initiation time (CIT) and economic service life (ESL) is proposed

Study on Factors Influencing Tourism: Way Forward for Sustainable Tourism in Bangladesh

    Get PDF
This paper was discussed about the factors affecting and or influencing tourism in Bangladesh highlighting interaction between biotic and abiotic factors that should be taken into consideration. Construction works including infrastructure development, visitors trespass, damages of natural regeneration, disturbance of wildlife breeding, waste disposal, visitor’s behavior and attitude towards the nature and wildlife. On the other hand travel transports including water transport are causing serious problems to the tourism environment. Oil spill of the water transports in the sea and river also causing severe problems to the marine and aquatic ecosystem. Unwanted sounds, noise pollution created by the visitors are also severe threat for tourism.  There is an urgent need to develop community through motivation, training and building their capacity to participate in the sustainable tourism activities. Every tour operator need to be organized pre tour training for common understanding on sustainable tourism and how to behave with the nature, wildlife, plants, disposal of wastes in the right places, limit the sound, take care about the natural regeneration avoiding damages. This may create awareness among the mass people and will helpful for sustainable tourism.  Sustainable tourism possesses intrinsic values of economic development, environmental considerations and social flow towards the sustainability.
