The Use of Palliative Performance Score in Patients with End-Stage Liver Disease

    Get PDF
    ● Palliative Care services are often underutilized in patients with End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD) and often only initiated at the end of life ● The Palliative Performance Score (PPS) is an important tool used in Palliative Care to assess functional status ● PPS has five functional dimensions: ambulation, activity level and evidence of disease, self-care, oral intake, and level of consciousness ● The aim of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score and PPS in ESLD patients ● MELD is used to predict mortality and to prioritize liver transplant allocation in ESLD patientshttps://jdc.jefferson.edu/medposters/1011/thumbnail.jp

Replacement Gastrostomy Tube Causing Acute Pancreatitis: Case Series with Review of Literature

    Get PDF
Context Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) feedings are generally considered safe with few serious complications. Acute pancreatitis is a rare complication associated with replacement percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tubes. Case report We report two cases of acute pancreatitis induced by migrated replacement percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tubes. Conclusions Migration of a balloon into the duodenum can result in external manipulation of the ampulla of Vater thereby disturbing the flow of pancreatic secretions leading to acute pancreatitis. Recognition of this complication is important and should be included as potential etiology of acute pancreatitis in patients receiving percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feedings. Periodic examination and documentation of the distance of the balloon from the skin should be performed to document the position of the tubes or any inadvertent migration of the tubes. The use of Foley catheters as permanent replacement tubes should be considered medically inappropriate

AIM: To improve patient prep compliance, prep quality, and an overall better experience by designing a prep specific website that will address the most common prep questions and concerns Once launched, the website address will be placed on printed colonoscopy prep instructions and stated on the after hours GI clinic voicemail as an additional patient resourcehttps://jdc.jefferson.edu/patientsafetyposters/1049/thumbnail.jp

An Approach of Automated Electronic Voting Management System for Bangladesh Using Biometric Fingerprint

The existing system of election is running manually and the piloted electronic voting using electronic voting machine (EVM) has many limitations in its mechanism. In this paper we have proposed an automated biometric electronic voting system, where a four layered network system has been used for sending the votes from client to the main database, and there exist three application servers and a client. That means, the proposed systems starts with automated registration system that would provide the secured database of the votersrsquo; information, and voter details will be stored against their finger prints in the main database. Finally, at the end of the day, casted votes will be counted automatically which would take lesser time than the manual system and the result would be accurate, faster and reliable, and thus minimize the corruption

Virulence of entomopathogenic fungus, metarhizium anisopliae to sweetpotato whitefly, bemisia tabaci (hemiptera: aleyrodidae) under osmotic stress

The aim of the present study was to investigate the virulence of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae (isolates PR1 and GT3) under osmotic stress condition. The virulence study of the fungus was conducted by three ways—growth (germination, vegetative growth and sporulation); enzymatic activities (chitinase, protease and lipase) of M. anisopliae and percentage mortality of Bemisia tabaci to M. anisopliae. Conidia of M. anisopliae were produced under different osmotic stress conditions as SDA medium as control, SDA medium with 0.5 M NaCl, SDA medium with 0.5 M KCl, SDA medium with 1 M NaCl and SDA medium with 1 M KCl. The germination percentage, vegetative growth, sporulation, chitinase and protease activities were highest for control of PR1 isolate, reaching up to 97 %, 4.1 cm and 6.6 × 106 conidia/ml, 2.6 mU/ml and 1.7 µg/ml/min, respectively. These values decreased up to 86.7 %, 3.6 cm and 4.1 × 106 conidia/ml, 1.6 mU/ml and 1.0 µg/ml/min, respectively under osmotic stress. The lipase activity was highest for 0.5 M NaCl of PR1 isolate, reaching up to 18.2 µmol/ml/min. The mortality percentage of B. tabaci was highest for control of PR1 and GT3 isolates, reaching up to 83.9 and 83.8 %, respectively. These values decreased up to 77.4 and 77.5 %, respectively under osmotic stress. This paper concludes that both the isolate PR1 and GT3 are virulent to B. tabaci under osmotic stress condition

LARGE-SCALE IFRS IMPLEMENTATION AND BANK PERFORMANCE: AN EMERGING ECONOMY PERSPECTIVE

    Get PDF
International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) are largely contributing to accounting quality improvement around the world. Since its first mandate in European countries, over 100 countries are now complying with the IFRS in their financial reporting practices. To date, plenty of research initiatives have been undertaken to examine the diverse impacts of IFRS from different perspectives. However, there remains a paucity in examining the changes in firm performance resulting from IFRS adoption, especially in the banking sector. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the impact of IFRS adoption on financial performances of commercial banks. Compiling panel data of 13 commercial banks listed in Dhaka Stock Exchange, an Ordinary Least Square (OLS) estimate has been administered. The empirical result of the study shows a strong relationship between the large-scale IFRS implementation and commercial banks’ financial performance. The findings of the study contribute to the IFRS literature by exposing the relationship between large scale IFRS implementation and bank performance from an emerging economy perspective. The study also recommends required country-specific strategic considerations in adopting and implementing IFRSs
