This paper describes the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of a SMS Management System to be used in the educational environment. This system is hoped to encourage communication among lecturers and students in the teaching and learning process. The context of the study was carried out at Universiti Utara Malaysia, Sintok, Kedah as higher learning institution in Malaysia and the study focused on the teaching and learning process in the Division of Applied Science, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).The motivation of the study is due to undergraduate students having to deal with many issues relating to academic difficulties such as instance communication with lecturers regarding matters such as assignments, group projects, quizzes and examination problems. Therefore, the SMS Management System architecture will be explored to identify what are the main elements and characteristics that must exist in designing and developing an Academic Alert System (AAS) concerning with academic management environment

Utilization of subnetworks through distributes gateway in LAN environment

It is a globally accepted fact that there is a significant increase in the use of Internet in a local area network (LAN) environment. Whilst the reliance (dependence) on the costly, and difficult to maintain, hardware and software brings about problems for organizations with small budget, the full utilization of networks is questionable, for example, at schools and colleges where server failure consistently occurs that leads toward inability to access the Internet. To address issues relating to this matter, this paper discusses on the viable alternative of IP masquerading that allows the interconnection of subnetworks and distribution of gateways in a multiple internal LAN environment. For the server which acts as a gateway to the Internet, an IP masquerading distribution based on Linux is used. A distributed gateway based on alternative routes to other gateways in different sub networks will minimize disconnections. The situation will ensure reliable and continuous connection through alternative sub networks in the event of a connection failure in adjoining sub-network. This results in a reliable and cheaper LAN-Internet connection through the IP masquerading servers as an alternative to proxy server software. It also ensures reliable and continuous Internet connection through an alternative sub network in the event of a connection failure in an adjoining sub network

Development of a web-based academic time management system

Web-based systems are widely used in organisational management. The research paper reports on how Web-based technology is used in developing an academic time management system. This prototype system, which is currently used in the School of Information Technology at the Universiti Utara Malaysia, has significantly improved time management. Through this Web-based application, users could manage their time for traditional meetings, student consultations and lectures. Furthermore, this application would enable users to discuss things collaboratively, design projects and conduct meetings through a virtual environment. This research also discovered some constraints and limitations of the system. Finally, an avenue for further research is also identifie

An investigation of knowledge creation process in the learningzone learning management system amongst postgraduate students

Knowledge management (KM) has been discussed in various domain but less emphasis is given in the educational field particularly in understanding the interaction between tacit and explicit knowledge. The knowledge is formed through connection of online learning environment elements. Therefore, the outcome of KM in educational field is unknown due to insignificant attention towards knowledge created from the process itself. This paper discusses the process of knowledge creation based on the Socialization, Externalization, Combination and Internalization (SECI) model amongst postgraduate students in an online learning environment.Research sample covers 160 postgraduate students who were actively involved in Learning Management System (LMS) support environment.A research instrument has been developed based on the SECI constructs. Factors examined are the intensity of knowledge creation processes for transforming tacit knowledge in the learning, thinking and decision making skills. The findings show that the model fit the data for thinking and decision making skills only. The findings indicate that the model is not applicable for developing learning skill for postgraduate students

An online system is any electronic interactive system that delivers information to the users via telephone lines to personal computers or via cables to terminals. So, online system is a great method of promoting flexible and fast access to a large data directly to the users without boundary. This project aims to develop the prototype online information system or SMK Seriab Portal to manage school activities better than the manual system. With this system teacher can download teaching courseware and syllabus; use online application and school calendar. Besides that, this project also aims to get teachers opinion on user’s satisfaction with portal system. The researcher find that gender, age and experience affect the user’s satisfaction. Overall, teachers are satisfied with content, accuracy, format, ease of use and timeliness of the portal. This finding will contribute to other researches as a guideline to develop related online information system

Fatigue damage severity assessment of RC beam

    No full text
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present the investigation of damage severity of reinforced concrete (RC) beam subjected to increasing fatigue loading using intensity of acoustic emission (AE) signal. Design/methodology/approach: Together 17 RC beams with dimension of 150 × 150 × 750 mm were prepared. Third point loading fatigue test was performed based on load at the first crack (Pcr) and the ultimate static load (Pult). The frequency of 1 Hz was used with the increasing fatigue loadings, 0.5Pcr (P1), 0.8Pcr (P2), 1.0Pcr (P3), 0.2Pult (P4), 0.5Pult (P5) and 0.6Pult (P6). The damage severity of crack for each phase of loading allowed the identification of the crack modes of the beams, namely, Zone A (no significant emission), Zone B (minor), Zone C (intermediate), Zone D (follow-up) and Zone E (major). Findings: The intensity analysis indicated clear trend with respect to crack propagation in the beam and, hence, can be used to monitor the crack occurrence in the beam. Originality/value: The intensity analysis has been carried out for the beam subjected to increasing fatigue loading. The analysis was based on the AE data obtained from channel basis and located event. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited
