Elaboration of the Coale-McNeil Nuptiality Model as The Generalized Log Gamma Distribution

The Coale-McNeil nuptiality model is a particular case of the generalized log gamma distribution model. In this paper, we demonstrate that recognition of this connection allows an expansion of the possible applications of the Coale-McNeil model. As examples, we propose a procedure to develop country specific standard schedules, and illustrate the utility in regression analysis (directly and via the competing risk framework). In addition, we employ this identification to enhance the ability of the models with empirical adjustment to trace the trajectory of the lifetime schedule for cohorts which have not completed the process. We illustrate an application to Japanese female cohorts. We also propose an application to fertility projection by modeling the fertility schedule by birth order.Coale-McNeil nuptiality model, fertility projection, first marriage schedule, generalized gamma distribution, marriage, nuptiality

Relationships between brown bears and chum salmon at McNeil River, Alaska

Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2007Since 1967, the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary (MRSGS) has been managed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game to 'provide permanent protection for brown bears'. Up to 144 bears have been identified in a summer at MRSGS, and 72 bears at once have been observed in the vicinity of McNeil Falls. In this study, 155 chum salmon were radio tagged as they entered McNeil River and monitored daily. In 2005 and 2006 bears killed 48% of pre-spawning tagged chum salmon and consumed 99% of all tagged chums below McNeil Falls where most of the run occurs. A retrospective analysis of 31 years of run data using a new stream life, and a correction for observer efficiency, revealed that the current escapement goal of 13,750-25,750 actually represents 34,375-64,375 chum salmon. Considering the large removal of pre-spawning chum salmon, I recommend an additional 23,000 chum salmon be added to the escapement goal. Additionally, an annual escapement of 4,000-6,000 chum salmon above McNeil Falls should be set as an objective. These recommendations should encourage increased chum salmon returns, providing both food for McNeil bears, as well as benefiting the commercial fishery with increased harvest opportunities.Stream life of chum salmon and a retrospective analysis of escapement at McNeil River, Alaska -- Management of chum salmon for brown bears and other fish and wildlife at McNeil River, Alaska

Conflict Resolution and Goal Maintenance Components of Executive Attention are Impaired in Persons With Aphasia: Evidence from the Picture-Word Interference Task

The relationship between language processing and attention has been a topic of research in linguistics, psychology and speech-language pathology for a very long time. Following the hypothesis that attention (e.g., Kahneman, 1973) may be related to impaired language performance in aphasia (McNeil, 1982), researchers have increasingly investigated this hypothesis (McNeil, Odell, & Tseng, 1991; Murray, 1999; Robin & Rizzo, 1989; Tseng, McNeil, & Milenkovic, 1993)

Modeling dependencies between rating categories and their effects on prediction in a credit risk portfolio

The internal-ratings based Basel II approach increases the need for the development of more realistic default probability models. In this paper we follow the approach taken in McNeil and Wendin (2006) by constructing generalized linear mixed models for estimating default probabilities from annual data on companies with different credit ratings. The models considered, in contrast to McNeil and Wendin (2006), allow parsimonious parametric models to capture simultaneously dependencies of the default probabilities on time and credit ratings. Macro-economic variables can also be included. Estimation of all model parameters are facilitated with a Bayesian approach using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. Special emphasis is given to the investigation of predictive capabilities of the models considered. In particular predictable model specifications are used. The empirical study using default data from Standard and Poor gives evidence that the correlation between credit ratings further apart decreases and is higher than the one induced by the autoregressive time dynamics

A scanned version of the transcript of a speech given by then University of Maine Chancellor Donald R. McNeil at the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems National Assembly in Denver, Colorado, September, 1972. McNeil was chairman of an Information Exchange Procedures Steering Committee for the Information Exchange Procedures Task Force. The introduction printed within the transcript noted, As the chief executive officer of the University of Maine, Dr. Donald R. McNeil must be concerned not only with academia as it relates to some 23,000 students but also with the administration of eight campuses and some 4,000 managerial, faculty, and support personnel. This latter responsibility has led to his association with such organizations as the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS), State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO), and others which have as a primary objective the improved management of higher educational institutions. McNeil\u27s speech discusses higher education assessment, accountability, and information reporting and exchange with state legislatures
