New Zealanders tuning into television news on the evening of December 1, 1999, were confronted with images of demonstrators in downtown Seattle breaking windows, vandalizing vehicles, and setting fires. As police sought to control rioters, arresting hundreds of demonstrators, television viewers were informed that the scenes in Seattle were reminiscent of the civil rights and anti-war protests that shook the United States in the 1960s. While American civil rights and anti-war protests were responses to domestic policy initiatives, the demonstrations in Seattle were organised by individuals from numerous countries, united in their suspicion of global free trade agendas

S-100 Overlays: A Brave New World?

Marine Information Overlay (MIO) is a generic term used to describe chart and navigation related information that supplement the content that is already contained in an ENC. This includes both static and dynamic information such as tide/water level, current flow, meteorological, oceanographic, and environmental protection. With the advent of S-100 and S-101, there is increased interest in providing a wide variety of ‘new’ overlay information. This paper provides a brief history of S-57 MIOs. Examples of navigational and non-navigation MIOs are given in terms of how currently used, by who, and for what purpose. Recommendations are provided for making a transition from S-57 MIOs to S-100 overlays that can be used with the ‘Next Generation’ ENC. More specifically, what has been proposed, how should they work, who will provide, and some future challenges/opportunities related to implementation

Modelling the Longitudinal Properties of Financial Ratios of European Firms

The use of financial ratios by analysts to compare the performance of firms from one accounting period to the next is of growing importance with continued European economic integration. Recent studies suggest that the individual component series of financial ratios exhibit nonstationarity which is not eliminated by the ratio transformation. In this paper, w e derive a generalised model that incorporates stochastic and deterministic trends and allows for restricted and unrestricted proportionate growth in the ratio numerator and denominator. When the individual firm series are included in a panel structure with large N and small T, we are unable to reject convincingly a joint hypothesis of nonstationarity, whilst in about one third of the individual firm panels there is no evidence of a unit root. The art of SME export marketing: a case study

In this paper, it is proposed that integrating arts and culture into international trade missions will stimulate arts and crafts, as well as SME exports. It can also help to package trade missions so that they appeal to a wider audience and build SMEs’ relationships with international partners. Arts and cultural organisations – as well as individual artists – share features and interests with other SMEs. A case study illustrates that by piggy-backing on each others’ unique skill sets, industry, tourism and the arts can together successfully contribute to trade missions that promote a region and the products produced there. Lessons that the primary author has learnt from organising and participating in numerous trade missions are used to develop a framework that could potentially be utilised to develop similar programmes. The results should be of value to policy-makers, export development organisations, arts and cultural development organisations, and individual SME managers and artists

Identity, community and embodiment: Chopper’s tattoo tour

Heavy Metal fans have a unique style of dress, music and interaction via which a sub-cultural community is formed and maintained. This article explores how this community is embodied through tattoos and the display of cultural symbols associated with the shared identity of Metallers. We employ the concept of metonym as a means of exploring the bodyscape of a particular Metaller and his interactions with others. The concept of the bodyscape is used to theorise links between community and identity as enacted at sub-cultural events

Who Needs Public Libraries? A community-based approach to a decades old debate

This paper explores the common and long-held idea that public libraries will soon become irrelevant in the digital age. Unlike the majority of the literature published about this subject, however, it does not argue that libraries need to “lose the books” (Lafrance, 2015), nor that librarians need to become “become a hipper crowdof shushers” (Jesella, 2007).
