    Gauge Dependence in Chern-Simons Theory

    Get PDF
We compute the contribution to the modulus of the one-loop effective action in pure non-Abelian Chern-Simons theory in an arbitrary covariant gauge. We find that the results are dependent on both the gauge parameter (α\alpha) and the metric required in the gauge fixing. A contribution arises that has not been previously encountered; it is of the form (α/p2)ϵμλνpλ(\alpha / \sqrt{p^2}) \epsilon _{\mu \lambda \nu} p^\lambda. This is possible as in three dimensions α\alpha is dimensionful. A variant of proper time regularization is used to render these integrals well behaved (although no divergences occur when the regularization is turned off at the end of the calculation). Since the original Lagrangian is unaltered in this approach, no symmetries of the classical theory are explicitly broken and ϵμλν\epsilon_{\mu \lambda \nu} is handled unambiguously since the system is three dimensional at all stages of the calculation. The results are shown to be consistent with the so-called Nielsen identities which predict the explicit gauge parameter dependence using an extension of BRS symmetry. We demonstrate that this α\alpha dependence may potentially contribute to the vacuum expectation values of products of Wilson loops.Comment: 17 pp (including 3 figures). Production of a water quality map of Saginaw Bay by computer processing of LANDSAT-2 data

Surface truth and LANDSAT measurements collected July 31, 1975, for Saginaw Bay were used to demonstrate a technique for producing a color coded water quality map. On this map, color was used as a code to quantify five discrete ranges in the following water quality parameters: (1) temperature, (2) Secchi depth, (3) chloride, (4) conductivity, (5) total Kjeldahl nitrogen, (6) total phosphorous, (7)chlorophyll a, (8) total solids and (9) suspended solids. The LANDSAT and water quality relationship was established through the use of a set of linear regression equations where the water quality parameters are the dependent variables and LANDSAT measurements are the independent variables. Although the procedure is scene and surface truth dependent, it provides both a basis for extrapolating water quality parameters from point samples to unsampled areas and a synoptic view of water mass boundaries over the 3000 sq. km bay area made from one day's ship data that is superior, in many ways, to the traditional machine contoured maps made from three day's ship data

    Spinors in Weyl Geometry

    Get PDF
We consider the wave equation for spinors in D{\cal D}-dimensional Weyl geometry. By appropriately coupling the Weyl vector ϕμ\phi _{\mu} as well as the spin connection ωμab\omega _{\mu a b } to the spinor field, conformal invariance can be maintained. The one loop effective action generated by the coupling of the spinor field to an external gravitational field is computed in two dimensions. It is found to be identical to the effective action for the case of a scalar field propagating in two dimensions.Comment: 13 pages, REVTEX, no figure

Characterization of vortex regeneration mechanism in the self-sustaining process of wall-bounded flows using resolvent analysis

    Get PDF
The regeneration mechanism of streamwise vortical structures in the self-sustaining process of wall-bounded turbulence is investigated. Resolvent analysis [1] is used to identify the principal forcing mode which produces the maximum amplification of the response modes in the minimal channel for the buffer [2] and logarithmic layer [3]. The identified mode is then projected out from the nonlinear term of the Navier-Stokes equations at each time step from the direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the corresponding minimal channel. The results show that the removal of the principal forcing mode is able to significantly inhibit turbulence for the buffer and logarithmic layer while removing the subsequent modes instead of the principal one only marginally affects the flow. Analysis of the dyadic interactions in the nonlinear term shows that the contributions toward the principal forcing mode come from a limited number of wavenumber interactions. Using conditional averaging, the flow structures that are responsible for generating the principal forcing mode, and thus the nonlinear interaction to self-sustain turbulence, are identified to be spanwise rolls interacting with meandering streaks

Computer Mapping of Water Quality in Saginaw Bay with LANDSAT Digital Data

The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT digital data and ground truth measurements for Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron), Michigan, for 31 July 1975 were correlated by stepwise linear regression and the resulting equations used to estimate invisible water quality parameters in nonsampled areas. Chloride, conductivity, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll a were best correlated with the ratio of LANDSAT Band 4 to Band 5. Temperature and Secchi depth correlate best with Band 5
