Vodka Tourism in Estonia: Cultural Identity or Clearly Commerce?
Vodka has been produced in Estonia since the late 1700ās. It has been said that 90% of Estonian Manor homes during that period had their own āvodka kitchenā for distilling the product. This cultural orientation of vodka changed to commerce with the introduction of a ferry service between the Finnish capital city of Helsinki and Estoniaās capital Tallinn in 1968. So called āvodka tourismā began to appear. Today approximately 15% of the total alcohol consumed in Finland is purchased in Tallinn area stores. This research examines the role of vodka, and āvodka tourismā, as it pertains to culture and commerce in Estonia
Profiling of the secretome of human cancer cells: Preparation of supernatant for proteomic analysis
Secretomic analysis requires removal of serum proteins from cell-culture media. We evaluate the proteins washed from cells prepared in bovine serum-supplemented medium. PBS and serum-free-medium (SFM) were the washing solutions. A Bradford assay was used for total protein concentration and a 1D gel and LC-MS/MS, to assign the protein to human or bovine origin. For both wash solutions, all bovine protein had been removed by the third wash, without compromising the number of living cells. Further washes reduced the number of living cells, especially when using PBS. Proteomic analysis of wash supernatant showed that SFM induced greater lysis of dead cells. Three washes were sufficient to minimize the effects on cell viability, while still removing serum proteins. Washing in SFM resulted in contamination of the wash supernatant with lysed dead cell proteins. Washed cells were incubated in SFM and exposed to ionizing radiation. Analysis of the supernatant showed an increase in human cytoplasmic, plasma membrane, and nuclear protein following irradiation. Secreted proteins were also detected, but in smaller quantities. The significance of these findings extend to in vitro studies of bystander phenomena, since the proteins of lysed dead cells may participate in driving bystander responses
The Effect of Marriage verses Cohabitation on Sexual Communication in Latino, African American, and Caucasian Adults
This study focuses on the effect of communication on sexual relationship satisfaction when comparing cohabiting couples with married couples. Communication is an important part of relational and sexual satisfaction. Research was conducted using scholarly journal articles and quantitative data from questionnaires. Fifty-four questionnaires were completed by males and females that were at least forty years, married or cohabitating, and identified as Latino, African American, or Caucasian. The data from the questionnaires found that both heterosexual and homosexual couples in domestic partnerships had better sexual communication than those who were married. Formation and transport of oxidized reactive nitrogen, ozone, and secondary organic aerosol in Tokyo
Measurements of the major reactive nitrogen species (NOy)i (NOx, peroxyacyl nitrates, HNO3, and particulate nitrate (NO3-), total reactive nitrogen (NOy), volatile organic compounds, OH and HO2, and organic aerosol were made near the urban center of Tokyo in different seasons of 2003-2004 to study the processes involving oxidized forms of reactive nitrogen and O3. Generally, NOx constituted the dominant fraction of NOy throughout the seasons. The NOx/NOy and HNO3/NOy ratios were lowest and highest, respectively, in summer, owing to the seasonally high OH concentration. The fraction of NOy that remained in the atmosphere after emission (RNOy) decreased with the decrease in the NOx/NOy ratio in summer and fall. It is likely that the median seasonal-diurnal variations Of Ox = O3 + NO2 were controlled by those of the background O3 levels, photochemical O3 formation, and vertical transport. Ox showed large increases during midday under stagnant conditions in mid-August 2004. Their in situ production rates calculated by a box model were too slow to explain the observed increases. The high Ox was likely due to the accumulation of Ox from previous days in the upper part of the boundary layer (BL) followed by transport down to near the surface by mixing after sunrise. Considering the tight correlation between Ox and secondary organic aerosol (SOA), it is likely that SOA also accumulated during the course of sea-land breeze circulation in the BL. Influence of southern hemispheric biomass burning on midtropospheric distributions of nonmethane hydrocarbons and selected halocarbons over the remote South Pacific
Aircraft measurements of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) and halocarbons were made over the remote South Pacific Ocean during late August-early October 1996 for NASA's Global Tropospheric Experiment (GTE) Pacific Exploratory Mission-Tropics A (PEM-Tropics A). This paper discusses the large-scale spatial distributions of selected trace gases encountered during PEM-Tropics A. The PEM-Tropics A observations are compared to measurements made over the southwestern pacific in early November 1995 as part of Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE 1). Continental pollution in the form of layers containing elevated levels of O3 was observed during a majority of PEM-Tropics flights, as well as during several ACE 1 flights. The chemical composition of these air masses indicates that they were not fresh and were derived from nonurban combustion sources. The substantial impact of biomass burning on the vertical structure of the South Pacific troposphere is discussed. Copyright 1999 by the American Geophysical Union

Extremely high He isotope ratios in MORB-source mantle from the proto-Iceland plume
The high <sup>3</sup>He/<sup>4</sup>He ratio of volcanic rocks thought to be derived from mantle plumes is taken as evidence for the existence of a mantle reservoir that has remained largely undegassed since the Earth's accretion. The helium isotope composition of this reservoir places constraints on the origin of volatiles within the Earth and on the evolution and structure of the Earth's mantle. Here we show that olivine phenocrysts in picritic basalts presumably derived from the proto-Iceland plume at Baffin Island, Canada, have the highest magmatic <sup>3</sup>He/<sup>4</sup>He ratios yet recorded. A strong correlation between <sup>3</sup>He/<sup>4</sup>He and <sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr, <sup>143</sup>Nd/<sup>144</sup>Nd and trace element ratios demonstrate that the <sup>3</sup>He-rich end-member is present in basalts that are derived from large-volume melts of depleted upper-mantle rocks. This reservoir is consistent with the recharging of depleted upper-mantle rocks by small volumes of primordial volatile-rich lower-mantle material at a thermal boundary layer between convectively isolated reservoirs. The highest <sup>3</sup>He/<sup>4</sup>He basalts from Hawaii and Iceland plot on the observed mixing trend. This indicates that a <sup>3</sup>He-recharged depleted mantle (HRDM) reservoir may be the principal source of high <sup>3</sup>He/<sup>4</sup>He in mantle plumes, and may explain why the helium concentration of the 'plume' component in ocean island basalts is lower than that predicted for a two-layer, steady-state model of mantle structure
