Four Scottish indulgences at Sens
English interest in the great Cistercian abbey of Pontigny was stimulated by the exiles there of two archbishops of Canterbury, Thomas Becket and Stephen Langton.1 As archbishops of Canterbury, Langton and Edmund of Abingdon made gifts to Pontigny abbey in consideration of the welcome given to Becket.2 Edmund did not die at Pontigny, but was a confrater of the community, and the abbot claimed the body, asserting that Edmund had expressed a wish to be buried there. The process of canonisation was rapid.3 After Edmund's canonisation, Henry III sent a chasuble and a chalice for the first celebration of the feast, and granted money to maintain four candles round the saint's shrine.4 In 1254, en route from Gascony to meet Louis IX in Chartres and Paris,5 Henry visited Pontigny, as his brother Richard of Cornwall, who seems to have pressed for canonisation, had done in 1247.6 Archbishop Boniface of Canterbury ordered the celebration of the feast to be observed throughout his province.7 Pope Alexander IV granted a dispensation to allow Englishwomen to enter the precinct of Pontigny abbey on the feast of the translation of the relics of St Edmund8 (women were normally forbidden to enter a Cistercian monastery). Matthew Paris, the greatest English chronicler of the age, wrote a life of the saint.9 English interest continued into the fourteenth century. In 1331 an English priest was given a licence to visit the shrine,10 but it seems likely that the Hundred Years’ War made pilgrimage to Pontigny difficult.11 The indulgences preserved by the abbey reveal an interest in the shrine throughout the Western Church, granted as they were by prelates from Tortosa to Livonia and Estonia, and from Messina to Lübeck.1
Carbon isotope anomaly in the major plant C-1 pool and its global biogeochemical implications
We report that the most abundant C-1 units of terrestrial plants, the methoxyl groups of pectin and lignin, have a unique carbon isotope signature exceptionally depleted in C-13. Plant-derived C-1 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are also anomalously depleted in C-13 compared with Cn+1 VOCs. The results confirm that the plant methoxyl pool is the predominant source of biospheric C-1 compounds of plant origin such as methanol, chloromethane and bromomethane. Furthermore this pool, comprising ca 2.5% of carbon in plant biomass, could be an important substrate for methanogenesis and thus be envisaged as a possible source of isotopically light methane entering the atmosphere. Our findings have significant implications for the use of carbon isotope ratios in elucidation of global carbon cycling. Moreover methoxyl groups could act as markers for biological activity in organic matter of terrestrial and extraterrestrial origin
Growers’ risk perception and trust in control options for huanglongbing citrus-disease in Florida and California
Citrus huanglongbing disease is an acute bacterial disease that threatens the sustainability of citrus production across the world. In the USA, the Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP) is responsible for spreading the disease. Successful suppression of HLB requires action against ACP at large spatial scales, i.e. growers must cooperate. In Florida and California, the regions in which citrus is grown have been split into management areas and growers are encouraged to coordinate spraying of insecticide across these (area-wide control). We surveyed growers from Florida and California to assess the consensus of opinions concerning issues that influence HLB management. Our results show that risk perception and trust in control options are central to the decision by growers on whether to join an area-wide control program. Growers’ perceptions on risk and control efficacy are influenced by information networks and observations about the state of the epidemic and psyllid populations. Researchers and extension agents were reported to have the largest influence on these perceptions. Differences in opinion between California and Florida growers as to the efficacy of treatments were largely a function of experience. A large proportion of growers identified failure of participation as a reason why participation in area-wide control might not occur
Intermediate-scale theory for electrons coupled to frustrated local-moments
A classic route for destroying long-lived electronic quasiparticles in a
weakly interacting Fermi liquid is to couple them to other low-energy degrees
of freedom that effectively act as a bath. We consider here the problem of
electrons scattering off the spin fluctuations of a geometrically frustrated
antiferromagnet, whose non-linear Landau-Lifshitz dynamics, which remains
non-trivial at all temperatures, we model in detail. At intermediate
temperatures and in the absence of any magnetic ordering, the fluctuating
local-moments lead to a non-trivial angular anisotropy of the scattering-rate
along the Fermi surface, which disappears with increasing temperature,
elucidating the role of "hot-spots". Over a remarkably broad window of
intermediate and high temperatures, the electronic properties can be described
by employing a local approximation for the dynamical spin-response. This we
contrast with the more familiar setup of electrons scattering off classical
phonons, whose high-temperature limit differs fundamentally on account of their
unbounded Hilbert space. We place our results in the context of layered

Nutrient status of cattle grazing systems in the western brazilian Amazon.
Low-input cultivated pastures to feed cattle have dominated land use after forest clearing for decades in the western Brazilian Amazon. This study was undertaken to help understand the inherent nutrient supply dynamics underwriting cattle performance on three farms in the state of Acre. We assessed soil chemical and physical properties associated over time with different land uses following forest clearing. This information permitted specifying a conceptual model of nutrient stocks and flows under the observed grazing system, which produced insights about the dynamics of soil nutrient degradation. Above ground forage mass, topsoil nutrient concentrations and soil bulk density were measured. Land covers were Brachiaria spp. grasses, a grass-Pueraria phaseoloides mix, cropland and forest. Most soil nutrient parameters initially decreased after clearing, gradually recovering over time with grass-only pastures; however, 20 yr-old pastures had 20% less forage mass. Most pasture system nutrients on these farms resided in topsoil and roots, where large stocks of mature forage supported soil fertility with recycled nutrients from litter. Estimates of partial topsoil nutrient balances were negative. This suggested that corresponding nutrient stocks and the accumulation of forage mass were probably maintained primarily through the sum of inflows from cattle excreta, the subsoil, soil organic matter, and litter mineralization with scant input of commercial fertilizer. Therefore, herd management to increase animal system productivity via higher stocking rates on vegetatively younger forage requires monitoring of nutrient stocks and flows and fertilization that assures replenishment of the nutrients extracted. Otherwise, rapid depletion of soil nutrient stocks will lead to system degradation and failure
Near-real time forest change detection using PlanetScope imagery
© 2020 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. To combat global deforestation, monitoring forest disturbances at sub-annual scales is a key challenge. For this purpose, the new Planetscope nano-satellite constellation is a game changer, with a revisit time of 1 day and a pixel size of 3-m. We present a near-real time forest disturbance alert system based on PlanetScope imagery: the Thresholding Rewards and Penances algorithm (TRP). It produces a new forest change map as soon as a new PlanetScope image is acquired. To calibrate and validate TRP, a reference set was constructed as a complete census of five randomly selected study areas in Tuscany, Italy. We processed 572 PlanetScope images acquired between 1 May 2018 and 5 July 2019. TRP was used to construct forest change maps during the study period for which the final user’s accuracy was 86% and the final producer’s accuracy was 92%. In addition, we estimated the forest change area using an unbiased stratified estimator that can be used with a small sample of reference data. The 95% confidence interval for the sample-based estimate of 56.89 ha included the census-based area estimate of 56.19 ha.s
Nest Success and Duckling Survival of Greater Scaup, Aythya marila, at Grassy Island, New Brunswick
Nesting biology and duckling survival of Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) at Grassy Island on the Saint John River in southern New Brunswick were compared between 1995 and 1996. Grassy Island in New Brunswick is an area that is notably removed from other scaup breeding areas, being located farther south from main breeding areas in North America. The Mayfield estimates of nest success were 61% and 21% in 1995 and 1996, respectively. Mean daily survival rates were 0.99 in 1995 and 0.96 in 1996 and were significantly different (t = 4.86, P < 0.001). Duckling survival was estimated to range from 38 to 54% in 1995, and was 8% in 1996. The lower breeding success in 1996 may have been due to factors associated with decreased temperatures and increased precipitation, but the fact that the breeding location is atypical to other Greater Scaup breeding areas should not be overlooked
