A Reassessment of the Conservation Status of a Critically Endangered Neotropical Frog, Mannophryne olmonae, Using Occupancy Modeling Techniques

Amphibian species worldwide are threatened with decline and extinction, making species monitoring an important scientific endeavor. The Bloody Bay Poison Frog, Mannophryne olmonae, a Tobago island endemic, was identified as critically endangered by the IUCN in 2004. Recent evidence suggests that a less severe conservation status may be appropriate for M. olmonae. This study employs acoustic calling surveys, land-use information, and multi-year (2011 and 2012) occupancy modeling techniques to propose an appropriate conservation status for this species. This study suggests that M. olmonae occupies a larger geographic range than was previously thought, and is not experiencing population declines. These findings, in conjunction with other data, suggest that this species does not require the conservation status of critically endangered and should be re-classified as vulnerable

Weight Control Behavior and Women: A Cross-Cultural Perspective

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to seek directly from culturally diverse women information on their weight control behavior. Specific questions were: What types of weight control behavior are practiced by women? 2) What factors influence participation in weight control behavior? and, 3) what are the cultural influences on women’s motivation and ability to participate in weight control behavior? Face-to-face in-depth interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 135 middle-income women (African American, Caucasian, Mexican American, Puerto Rican) in their homes, offices, and at other places in their neighborhoods. Additional data collection included measuring body weight and height. The lived experiences of weight control behavior were similar for culturally diverse women and many factors, including, cultural influences, affect women’s ability and motivation to participate in weight control behavior. Conclusions suggest that weight control experiences of culturally diverse women need to be reflected in obesity risk reduction programs

Perception of Emotions in Music and Speech in People with Parkinson's Disease (PD) and Healthy Age-Matched Controls

    Get PDF
People with Parkinson's disease (PD) often present with emotional perception deficits. Prior studies provide support that these deficits are seen in the processing of verbal as well as non-verbal emotions. The current study compared the perception of emotions (e.g., happy, angry, and sad) as they occurred in music and speech stimuli among people with PD and healthy age-matched controls. Results indicated that people with PD perceived emotions less accurately than healthy controls. Anger was identified with significantly more accuracy than sadness and happiness. In addition, accuracy of identification in music was more accurate than speech in people with PD. The results of the study suggest that perception of emotions may be modality specific, or limited only to speech in people with PD.Communication Sciences and Disorder
