    Could psoralen plus ultraviolet A1 (“PUVA1”) work? Depth penetration achieved by phototherapy lamps

    Funding: PhD Studentship UK EPRSC EP/N509759/1.Psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA) is useful in treating various hand and foot skin diseases.1 Most cases of psoriasis respond well to phototherapy or PUVA. However, for some diseases, such as palmoplantar pustular psoriasis, PUVA is not always sufficient to produce therapeutic effect. If PUVA fails, it is sometimes necessary to progress to other treatments such as Grenz ray therapy (where available),2 systemic retinoid or systemic immunosuppression.     A simple abstraction of arrays and maps by program translation

    We present an approach for the static analysis of programs handling arrays, with a Galois connection between the semantics of the array program and semantics of purely scalar operations. The simplest way to implement it is by automatic, syntactic transformation of the array program into a scalar program followed analysis of the scalar program with any static analysis technique (abstract interpretation, acceleration, predicate abstraction,.. .). The scalars invariants thus obtained are translated back onto the original program as universally quantified array invariants. We illustrate our approach on a variety of examples, leading to the " Dutch flag " algorithm

    Proximity-driven source of highly spin-polarized ac current on the basis of superconductor/weak ferromagnet/superconductor voltage-biased Josephson junction

    We theoretically investigate an opportunity to implement a source of highly spin-polarized ac current on the basis of superconductor/weak ferromagnet/superconductor (SFS) voltage-biased junction in the regime of essential proximity effect and calculate the current flowing through the probe electrode tunnel coupled to the ferromagnetic interlayer region. It is shown that while the polarization of the dc current component is generally small in case of weak exchange field of the ferromagnet, there is an ac component of the current in the system. This ac current is highly spin-polarized and entirely originated from the non-equilibrium proximity effect in the interlayer. The frequency of the current is controlled by the voltage applied to SFS junction. We discuss a possibility to obtain a source of coherent ac currents with a certain phase shift between them by tunnel coupling two probe electrodes at different locations of the interlayer region.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    A CDCL-style calculus for solving non-linear constraints

    In this paper we propose a novel approach for checking satisfiability of non-linear constraints over the reals, called ksmt. The procedure is based on conflict resolution in CDCL style calculus, using a composition of symbolical and numerical methods. To deal with the non-linear components in case of conflicts we use numerically constructed restricted linearisations. This approach covers a large number of computable non-linear real functions such as polynomials, rational or trigonometrical functions and beyond.     Temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering fine structure in equiatomic CuAu

    The temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering fine structure from disordered equiatomic CuAu was studied using {\it in situ} x-ray scattering. In contrast to Cu3_3Au the diffuse peak splitting in CuAu was found to be relatively insensitive to temperature. Consequently, no evidence for a divergence of the antiphase length-scale at the transition temperature was found. At all temperatures studied the peak splitting is smaller than the value corresponding to the CuAuII modulated phase. An extended Ginzburg-Landau approach is used to explain the temperature dependence of the diffuse peak profiles in the ordering and modulation directions. The estimated mean-field instability point is considerably lower than is the case for Cu3_3Au.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Possible unconventional superconductivity in iron-based layered compound LaFePO: Study of heat capacity

    Heat capacity measurements were performed on recently discovered iron based layered superconductors, non doped LaFePO and fluorine doped LaFePO. A relatively large electronic heat capacity coefficient and a small normalized heat capacity jump at Tc = 3.3 K were observed in LaFePO. LaFePO0.94F0.06 had a smaller electronic heat capacity coefficient and a larger normalized heat capacity jump at Tc = 5.8 K. These values indicate that these compounds have strong electron electron correlation and magnetic spin fluctuation, which are the signatures of unconventional superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuation.Comment: 15 Pages, 3 Figure

    Theory for phonon-induced superconductivity in MgB2_2

    We analyze superonductivity in MgB2_2 observed below Tc=39T_c=39 K resulting from electron-phonon coupling involving a mode at ω1=24\hbar \omega_1 = 24 meV and most importantly the in-plane B-B E2gE_{2g} vibration at ω2=67\hbar \omega_2=67 meV. The quasiparticles originating from π\pi- and σ\sigma-states couple strongly to the low-frequency mode and the E2gE_{2g}-vibrations respectively. Using two-band Eliashberg theory, λπ=1.4\lambda_{\pi} = 1.4 and λσ=0.7\lambda_{\sigma} = 0.7, we calculate the gap functions Δi(ω,0)\Delta^{i}(\omega,0) (i=πi=\pi, σ\sigma). Our results provide an explanation of recent tunneling experiments. We get Hc2ab/Hc2c3.9H^{ab}_{c_2}/H^{c}_{c_2} \approx 3.9.Comment: revised version, accepted for publication in PR

    Disorder induced collapse of the electron phonon coupling in MgB2_{2} observed by Raman Spectroscopy

    The Raman spectrum of the superconductor MgB2_{2} has been measured as a function of the Tc of the film. A striking correlation is observed between the TcT_{c} onset and the frequency of the E2gE_{2g} mode. Analysis of the data with the McMillan formula provides clear experimental evidence for the collapse of the electron phonon coupling at the temperature predicted for the convergence of two superconducting gaps into one observable gap. This gives indirect evidence of the convergence of the two gaps and direct evidence of a transition to an isotropic state at 19 K. The value of the electron phonon coupling constant is found to be 1.22 for films with Tc_{c} 39K and 0.80 for films with Tc_{c}\leq19K.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Extremely Large and Anisotropic Upper Critical Field and the Ferromagnetic Instability in UCoGe

    Magnetoresistivity measurements with fine tuning of the field direction on high quality single crystals of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe show anomalous anisotropy of the upper critical field H_c2. H_c2 for H // b-axis (H_c2^b) in the orthorhombic crystal structure is strongly enhanced with decreasing temperature with an S-shape and reaches nearly 20 T at 0 K. The temperature dependence of H_c2^a shows upward curvature with a low temperature value exceeding 30 T, while H_c2^c at 0 K is very small (~ 0.6 T). Contrary to conventional ferromagnets, the decrease of the Curie temperature with increasing field for H // b-axis marked by an enhancement of the effective mass of the conduction electrons appears to be the origin of the S-shaped H_c2^b curve. These results indicate that the field-induced ferromagnetic instability or magnetic quantum criticality reinforces superconductivity.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in J. Phys.
