[2020 Winner] The Power of Guinaiya: The Intersections of Love and Resistance Through the Native Chamoru Voice

    Get PDF
Over the last three centuries, the indigenous Chamoru people of GuÄhan have endured several accounts of foreign colonization. Through time and physical space, native Chamorus have witnessed environmental destruction of precious ancestral land, a loss of deeply rooted cultural traditions and language, and blatant disrespect for an island and its people by the U.S. military. As an unincorporated territory of the United States, the Department of Defense has made their point clear: GuÄhan is a military vessel first and foremost and the future of the island lies within the hands of the U.S. government. Though GuÄhan might be small in size, the strength and resilience of the native Chamoru people has persisted despite the increased militarization and colonization of the island. Through indigenous acts of resistance and self care, the intersections of poetic expression, love, and social justice uplifts and empowers the inhabitants of GuÄhan and other surrounding islands in the Northern Marianas.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/esa_submissions/1090/thumbnail.jp

Winged Tangi'ia: A Mangaian Dramatic Performance

    Get PDF
With the arrival of Europeans rapid and far-reaching social change occurred in Polynesia, and a number of observers predicted that the oral tradition of the area in which they were living was about to disappear. Yet over much, if not all, of Polynesia an oral tradition continues to flourish, much of it a synthesis of old and new elements. The purpose of this article is to examine something of this creative and ongoing process as it can be viewed in the tradition of dance-drama on the island of Mangaia. An example of a dramatic performance recorded in 1973 is chosen, and the recorded text and a translation are given. The performance is placed in its immediate social context, and attention is paid to the relationship between the performers and their audience. At the same time it is shown that the play also requires a careful consideration of Mangaian history and culture. Because the Mangaian dance-drama is a highly flexible art form that readily combines new and old elements, a sophisticated understanding requires the adoption of a number of different approaches

A Curriculum Design Using Mnemonic-Type Techniques to Aid Recall in Low/Average Achievers in the Fifth Grade

Children in the Duval County School System in Jacksonville, Florida, who are low/average achievers have to compete in a multi-graded classroom atmosphere. These students are passed along supported by low minimum-based competency test scores. The purpose of this project was to show teachers how they can present mnemonic procedures to these students in an effort to help these students raise test scores, boost self-esteem, and provide a self-help study device that can aid their progress in subsequent grades, aid morale, and thus avoid potential drop-outs in the system. This curriculum design is offered in the subjects of health and science. The research reviewed shows that mnemonic procedures can be used in all subject areas in the fifth grade
