An exploration into the client at the heart of therapy : a qualitative perspective
Over 50 years ago Eysenck challenged the existing base of research into psychotherapy. Since that time, a large number of investigations have been conducted to verify the efficacy of therapy. Recently however, an increasing number of studies have cast new doubts on this research base. Instead of therapy being a function of the therapist, it is now becoming ever more apparent that the client plays a prime role in the therapeutic process. The qualitative studies presented in this paper provide some examples of research that demonstrates that clients are actively involved in their therapy, even making counselling work despite their counsellor. These studies suggest that clients may not experience therapy as beneficially as traditional outcome studies indicate. This raises a new challenge to researchers to more fully explore the client's experience of therapy, a challenge to which qualitative methods of inquiry would appear well suited
Using Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of Nuclear Dust Morphology to Rule Out Bars Fueling Seyfert Nuclei
If AGN are powered by the accretion of matter onto massive black holes, how
does the gas in the host galaxy lose the required angular momentum to approach
the black hole? Gas easily transfers angular momentum to stars in strong bars,
making them likely candidates. Although ground-based searches for bars in
active galaxies using both optical and near infrared surface brightness have
not found any excess of bars relative to quiescent galaxies, the searches have
not been able to rule out small-scale nuclear bars. To look for these nuclear
bars we use HST WFPC2-NICMOS color maps to search for the straight dust lane
signature of strong bars. Of the twelve Seyfert galaxies in our sample, only
three have dust lanes consistent with a strong nuclear bar. Therefore, strong
nuclear bars cannot be the primary fueling mechanism for Seyfert nuclei. We do
find that a majority of the galaxies show an spiral morphology in their dust
lanes. These spiral arms may be a possible fueling mechanism.Comment: To be published in the Astronomical Journal, June 1999. 25 pages and

The Fundamental Plane of Gravitational Lens Galaxies and The Evolution of Early-Type Galaxies in Low Density Environments
Most gravitational lenses are early-type galaxies in relatively low density
environments -- a ``field'' rather than a ``cluster'' population. We show that
field early-type galaxies with 0 < z < 1, as represented by the lens galaxies,
lie on the same fundamental plane as those in rich clusters at similar
redshifts. We then use the fundamental plane to measure the combined
evolutionary and K-corrections for early-type galaxies in the V, I and H bands.
Only for passively evolving stellar populations formed at z > 2 (H_0=65 km/s
Mpc, Omega_0=0.3, Lambda_0=0.7) can the lens galaxies be matched to the local
fundamental plane. The high formation epoch and the lack of significant
differences between the field and cluster populations contradict many current
models of the formation history of early-type galaxies. Lens galaxy colors and
the fundamental plane provide good photometric redshift estimates with an
empirical accuracy of -0.03 +/- 0.11 for the 17 lenses with known redshifts. A
mass model dominated by dark matter is more consistent with the data than
either an isotropic or radially anisotropic constant M/L mass model, and a

The provision of adult intensive care in Northern Ireland with reference to the role of high dependency care.
In 1991 an audit of Intensive Care Services was carried out by the Northern Ireland Intensive Care Group. In conjunction with this regional overview, all patients in the Regional Intensive Care Unit, (RICU) in the Royal Victoria Hospital were assessed daily, over a 10 month period in 1990-91 and classified as conforming to either intensive care or high dependency status. These data were then used to compare adult intensive care service in Northern Ireland with recent national and international recommendations on intensive care. Ten units in Northern Ireland were surveyed. In regard to national or international guidelines, all ten were deficient to some degree. Four units had significant deficiencies; small patient numbers, lack of 'dedicated' 24 hr medical cover and or deficiencies in the provision of appropriate monitoring and or equipment. There was a large diversity in casemix among the ten units surveyed which suggested differing admission criteria. The bed occupancy of RICU was 100%. Refused admissions constituted a further 13% of unresourced workload. The lack of physically separate, dedicated high dependency unit facilities meant that 26% of bed days were devoted to HDU care (usually for "improved" intensive care unit patients not yet ready for discharge to a general ward. Achieving nationally recommended intensive care standards (on a regional basis) is probably only possible if a number of the smaller intensive care units are redesignated as high dependency units, and patients requiring intensive care are concentrated in a smaller number of larger ICUs. This will increase the frequency of interhospital transfer of critically ill patients
The Hypervelocity Star SDSS J090745.0+024507 is a Short-Period Variable
We present high-precision photometry of the hypervelocity star SDSS
J090745.0+024507 (HVS), which has a Galactic rest-frame radial velocity of
v=709 km/s, and so has likely been ejected from the supermassive black hole in
the Galactic center. Our data were obtained on two nights using the MMT 6.5m
telescope, and is supplemented by lower precision photometry obtained on four
nights using the FLWO 1.2m telescope. The high-precision photometry indicates
that the HVS is a short-period, low-amplitude variable, with period P=0.2-2
days and amplitude A = 2-10%. Together with the known effective temperature of
T_eff ~ 10,500 K (spectral type B9), this variability implies that the HVS is a
member of the class of slowly pulsating B-type main sequence stars, thus
resolving the previously-reported two-fold degeneracy in the luminosity and
distance of the star. The HVS has a heliocentric distance of 71 kpc, and an age
of ~0.35 Gyr. The time of ejection from the center of the Galaxy is < 100 Myr,
and thus the existence of the OS constitutes observational evidence of a
population of young stars in the proximity of the central supermassive black
hole ~0.1 Gyr ago. It is possible that the HVS was a member of a binary that
was tidally disrupted by the central black hole; we discuss constraints on the

Correlation effects in Ni 3d states of LaNiPO
The electronic structure of the new superconducting material LaNiPO
experimentally probed by soft X-ray spectroscopy and theoretically calculated
by the combination of local density approximation with Dynamical Mean-Field
Theory (LDA+DMFT) are compared herein. We have measured the Ni L2,3 X-ray
emission (XES) and absorption (XAS) spectra which probe the occupied and
unoccupied the Ni 3d states, respectively. In LaNiPO, the Ni 3d states are
strongly renormalized by dynamical correlations and shifted about 1.5 eV lower
in the valence band than the corresponding Fe 3d states in LaFeAsO. We further
obtain a lower Hubbard band at -9 eV below the Fermi level in LaNiPO which
bears striking resemblance to the lower Hubbard band in the correlated oxide
NiO, while no such band is observed in LaFeAsO. These results are also
supported by the intensity ratio between the transition metal L2 and L3 bands
measured experimentally to be higher in LaNiPO than in LaFeAsO, indicating the
presence of the stronger electron correlations in the Ni 3d states in LaNiPO in
comparison with the Fe 3d states in LaFeAsO. These findings are in accordance
with resonantly excited transition metal L3 X-ray emission spectra which probe
occupied metal 3d-states and show the appearance of the lower Hubbard band in
LaNiPO and NiO and its absence in LaFeAsO.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Multiple coupling of silanes with imido complexes of Mo
The bis(imido) complexes (tBuNv)2Mo(PMe3)(L) (L = PMe3, C2H4) react with up to three equivalents of
silane PhSiH3 to give the imido-bridged disilyl silyl Mo(VI) complex (tBuN){μ-tBuN(SiHPh)2}Mo(H)(SiH2Ph)-
(PMe3)2 (3) studied by NMR, IR and X-ray diffraction. NMR data supported by DFT calculations show that
complex 3 is an unusual example of a silyl hydride of Mo(VI), without significant Si⋯H interaction. Mechanistic
NMR studies revealed that silane addition proceeds in a stepwise manner via a series of Si–H⋯M
agostic and silanimine complexes whose structures were further elucidated by DFT calculation
