With a spirited criticism of Zelman v. Simmons-Harris (2002), this article summarizes many arguments against the voucher decision, including the dissenting opinions of U.S. Supreme Court justices, opponents of the decision, and amicus curiae briefs from the American Jewish Committee, the Anti-Defamation League, and the Ohio School Boards Association, all of whom argued against the Cleveland Plan. In the end, the decision may prove dangerous to Catholic schools that accept public voucher monies

The emotional intelligence of pediatric residents – a descriptive cross-sectional study

Background: Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a type of social intelligence.  Excellent scores are achieved by displaying high levels of empathy in interpersonal relationships, strong skills in managing stressful situations as well as other personal competencies. Many of the social competencies that EI describes may have a direct impact on patient care. The objective of this study was to describe EI of pediatric residents and to identify if there are EI skills that should be selected for targeted intervention.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study administering the EQ-i 2.0© psychometric instrument to pediatric residents at the University of Alberta.Results: Thirty-five residents completed the EQ-i 2.0© (100% response rate). Their overall EI score was not significantly different than a normative group of college-educated professionals. Residents had relative strengths in the subcategories of Emotional expression, Interpersonal Relationships, Empathy, and Impulse Control (all p<0.05).  Areas of relative weakness were in the subcategories of Stress Tolerance, Assertiveness, Independence, and Problem Solving (all p<0.05).  Conclusion: The EI of pediatric residents is consistent with that of other professionals. Educational interventions may be useful in the areas of weakness to enhance the physician-patient relationship

On the Rotation Period of (90377) Sedna

We present precise, ~1%, r-band relative photometry of the unusual solar system object (90377) Sedna. Our data consist of 143 data points taken over eight nights in October 2004 and January 2005. The RMS variability over the longest contiguous stretch of five nights of data spanning nine days is only 1.3%. This subset of data alone constrain the amplitude of any long-period variations with period P to be A<1% (P/20 days)^2. Over the course of any given 5-hour segment, the data exhibits significant linear trends not seen in a comparison star of similar magnitude, and in a few cases these segments show clear evidence for curvature at the level of a few millimagnitudes per hour^2. These properties imply that the rotation period of Sedna is O(10 hours), cannot be 10 days, unless the intrinsic light curve has significant and comparable power on multiple timescales, which is unlikely. A sinusoidal fit yields a period of P=(10.273 +/- 0.002) hours and semi-amplitude of A=(1.1 +/- 0.1)%. There are additional acceptable fits with flanking periods separated by ~3 minutes, as well as another class of fits with P ~ 18 hours, although these later fits appear less viable based on visual inspection. Our results indicate that the period of Sedna is likely consistent with typical rotation periods of solar system objects, thus obviating the need for a massive companion to slow its rotation.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2.5 tables. Perceptions of Educational Leadership Faculty Regarding Open Access Publishing

There is a dearth of research on the perceptions of faculty members in educational leadership regarding open access publications. This reality may exist because of a lack of funding for educational leadership research, financial obstacles, tenure demands, or reputation concerns. It may be that there are simply fewer established open access publishers with reputable impact factors to encourage publication by members in the field. The current study seeks to answer the following question: “What are the perceptions of educational leadership faculty members in UCEA about open access publishing?” The results are based on responses from 180 faculty members in the field of educational leadership

Job Attainment and Perceived Role Differences of Cyberschool Leaders

As cyberschooling options expand, it is vital that we understand the nuances of these particular learning opportunities. Because little research exists on leaders of K-12 cyberschools, this exploratory case study had two purposes. We first examined how 18 cyberschool leaders in the United States obtained their position. Second, we explored the perceptions of cyberschool leaders regarding the differences between their job and that of a traditional brick-and-mortar school leader. We found that cyberschool leaders tend to be predominantly new, technology savvy administrators who have some background in online learning. Main differences between cyberschool leadership and brick-and-mortar school leadership included interactions with students, teacher supervision, provision of professional development, and management of the day-to-day operations

An optimal ALMA image of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field in the era of JWST: obscured star formation and the cosmic far-infrared background

We combine archival ALMA data targeting the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) to produce the deepest currently attainable 1-mm maps of this key, extragalactic survey field. Combining all existing data in Band 6, our deepest map covers 4.2arcmin^2, with a beamsize of 1.49"x1.07" at an effective frequency of 243GHz (1.23mm). It reaches an rms of 4.6uJy/beam, with 1.5arcmin^2 below 9.0uJy/beam, an improvement of >5% over the best previously published map and 50% improvement in some regions. We also make a wider, but shallower map, covering 25.4arcmin^2. We detect 45 galaxies in the deep map down to 3.6sigma, including 10 more 1-mm sources than previously detected. 38 of these galaxies have a JWST ID from the JADES NIRCam imaging and the new sources are typically faint and red. A stacking analysis on the positions of ALMA-undetected JADES galaxies yields detections for z<4 and stellar masses from 10^(8.4) to 10^(10.4)Msun, extracting 10% of additional stacked signal from our map compared to previous analyses. Detected sources and stacking contribute (10.0+/-0.5)Jy/deg^2 of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) at 1.23mm. Although this is short of the (uncertain) background level of about 20Jy/deg^2, after taking into account intrinsic fluctuations in the CIB, our measurement is consistent with the background if the HUDF is a mild (~2sigma) negative fluctuation. This suggests that within the HUDF, JWST may have detected essentially all of the galaxies that contribute to the CIB. Our stacking analysis predicts that the field contains around 60 additional galaxies with 1.23mm flux densities averaging around 15uJy, and over 300 galaxies at the few uJy level. However, the contribution of these fainter more modestly-obscured objects to the background is small, and converging, as anticipated from the now well-established strong correlation between galaxy stellar mass and obscured star formation.Comment: Submitted to MNRA
