The boundary-domain integral equation system equivalence to the original boundary value problems and the Fredholm properties and invertibility of the corresponding boundary-domain integral operators are analyzed in weighted Sobolev spaces suitable for infinite domains. This analysis is based on the corresponding properties of the BVPs in weighted Sobolev spaces that are proved as well. The work was supported by the grant EP/H020497/1 \Mathematical analysis of localised boundary-domain integral equations for BVPs with variable coefficients" of the EPSRC, UK

Laminar friction and heat transfer at Mach numbers from 1 to 10

    Get PDF
Velocity and temperature profiles and laminar boundary-layer characteristics have been computed for Mach numbers from 1 to 10, utilizing experimental values of the heat capacity, viscosity, and conductivity. The analysis shows that effective temperature, which is a function of the surface temperature and stream conditions, arises naturally and is the proper reference temperature to be used in heat-transfer calculations. The effective temperature and the recovery temperature become identical for the condition of zero heat transfer

Two year groups (1+ and 2+; n = 10/group) of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were sampled from a Danish marine fish farm. Fish were selected to span the same weight range (1+: 2643 - 3875 g; 2+: 2651 - 3912 g). During production (April to November) fish were fed identical commercial diets. Visual fat depots of faster and slower growing animals were examined by image analysis of directly scanned cutlets. No significant (P > 0.05) correlation between meat percentage and fish size (length, weight, condition factor, dressed weight) was found, and t-tests failed to expose any difference in fat: meat ratio between 1+ and 2+ yr old rainbow trout. However, a significant difference (P < 0.05) between variances for the two groups was observed, being approximately four-fold larger for 1+ yr animals compared to 2+ yr. This finding indicates that selection for faster growth results in less uniform products from a compositional perspective. Where specific product specifications should be met, this might complicate production management.Dvije grupe (1+ i 2+; n=10/grupi) kalifornijskih pastrva (Oncorhynchus mykiss) potjecale su s morskog uzgajališta u Danskoj.

The feasibility of totally replacing the fishmeal component of marine shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) diets was examined both in the laboratory setting and during a full–scale commercial trial. Animals were fed either a traditional fishmeal–based diet or one in which complete replacement of fishmeal, on a per protein basis, was manufactured using a yeast–based product, NuPro®. Laboratory studies determined that irrespective of diet fed, no difference in shrimp performance (weight gain, survival and SGR) occurred. A field trial was thus activated to determine whether lab–scale studies were transferable to the commercial setting. Trials were conducted in earthen ponds from mid–June to early November 2005. Ponds were initially stocked with PL12–16 shrimp at a rate of 100,000 per hectare. At trial end, ponds receiving the NuPro®–based feed had equivalent growth to that of shrimp fed the traditional, fishmeal–based diet. Percent increase in weight from initial values and survival for the NuPro® ponds was 296, 269 and 275%, and 78, 76 and 85% respectively, whereas that for the fishmeal–based diet was 305% and 80% respectively. Noteworthy was that within pond size variation of L. vannamei was lower in NuPro® fed animals (±2.3 g) when compared against animals receiving the traditional feed (±4.1 g). Overall observations from the field trial indicate the importance of the »bioreactor« pond with respect to the supply of energy to sustain shrimp growth potential.

The effect of intraperitoneal (ip) vaccination upon the performance of rainbow trout (n = 1611), maintained under commercial production conditions (aerated spring water, 9.8 ºC, 150 L/min), was evaluated over a 7-week period. Vaccine impact was examined with reference to control (n = 1683) and injected control (sterile filtered water; n = 1537) animals. All groups were run in triplicate (i. e., n 500 fish per gorup). Animals were fed to satiation twice daily. Vaccination suppressed (P500 riba/grupi). Cjepivo je uzrokovala abdominalnu adheziju, no razlike u kemijskom sastavu tijela nisu ustanovljene

The Rest-Frame Optical Spectrum of MS 1512-cB58

Moderate resolution, near-IR spectroscopy of MS1512-cB58 is presented, obtained during commissioning of the the Near IR Spectrometer (NIRSPEC) on the Keck II telescope. The strong lensing of this z=2.72 galaxy by the foreground cluster MS1512+36 makes it the best candidate for detailed study of the rest-frame optical properties of Lyman Break Galaxies. A redshift of z=2.7290+/-0.0007 is inferred from the emission lines, in contrast to the z=2.7233 calculated from UV observations of interstellar absorption lines. Using the Balmer line ratios, we find an extinction of E(B-V)=0.27. Using the line strengths, we infer an SFR=620+/-18 Msun/yr (H_0=75, q_0=0.1, Lambda =0), a factor of 2 higher than that measured from narrow-band imaging observations of the galaxy, but a factor of almost 4 lower than the SFR inferred from the UV continuum luminosity. The width of the Balmer lines yields a mass of M_vir=1.2x10^10 Msun. We find that the oxygen abundance is 1/3 solar, in good agreement with other estimates of the metallicity. However, we infer a high nitrogen abundance, which may argue for the presence of an older stellar population.Comment: 14 pages, including 3 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
