Changes in Imja Tsho in the Mount Everest Region of Nepal
Imja Tsho, located in the Sagarmatha ( Everest) National Park of Nepal, is one of the most studied and rapidly growing lakes in the Himalayan range. Compared with previous studies, the results of our sonar bathymetric survey conducted in September of 2012 suggest that its maximum depth has increased from 90.5 to 116.3 +/- 5.2 m since 2002, and that its estimated volume has grown from 35.8 +/- 0.7 to 61.7 +/- 3.7 million m(3). Most of the expansion of the lake in recent years has taken place in the glacier terminus-lake interface on the eastern end of the lake, with the glacier receding at about 52 m yr(-1) and the lake expanding in area by 0.04 km(2) yr(-1). A ground penetrating radar survey of the Imja-Lhotse Shar glacier just behind the glacier terminus shows that the ice is over 200 m thick in the center of the glacier. The volume of water that could be released from the lake in the event of a breach in the damming moraine on the western end of the lake has increased to 34.1 +/- 1.08 million m(3) from the 21 million m(3) estimated in 2002.USAID Climate Change Resilient Development (CCRD) projectFulbright FoundationNational Geographic SocietyCenter for Research in Water Resource
HARM: A Numerical Scheme for General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamics
We describe a conservative, shock-capturing scheme for evolving the equations
of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics. The fluxes are calculated using
the Harten, Lax, and van Leer scheme. A variant of constrained transport,
proposed earlier by T\'oth, is used to maintain a divergence free magnetic
field. Only the covariant form of the metric in a coordinate basis is required
to specify the geometry. We describe code performance on a full suite of test
problems in both special and general relativity. On smooth flows we show that
it converges at second order. We conclude by showing some results from the

Neutral Gas Properties and Ly Escape in Extreme Green Pea Galaxies
Mechanisms regulating the escape of Ly photons and ionizing radiation
remain poorly understood. To study these processes we analyze VLA 21cm
observations of one Green Pea (GP), J160810+352809 (hereafter J1608), and HST
COS spectra of 17 GP galaxies at . All are highly ionized: J1608 has the
highest [O III] /[O II] for star-forming galaxies in
SDSS, and the 17 GPs have [O III]/[O II] . We set an upper limit on
J1608's HI mass of , near or below average compared to
similar mass dwarf galaxies. In the COS sample, eight GPs show Ly
absorption components, six of which also have Ly emission. The HI
column densities derived from Ly absorption are high, cm, well above the LyC optically thick limit. Using
low-ionization absorption lines, we measure covering fractions
(f_{\mbox{cov}}) of , and find that f_{\mbox{cov}} strongly
anti-correlates with Ly escape fraction. Low covering fractions may
facilitate Ly and LyC escape through dense neutral regions. GPs with
f_{\mbox{cov}}\sim1 all have low neutral gas velocities, while GPs with lower
f_{\mbox{cov}}=0.2-0.6 have a larger range of velocities. Conventional
mechanical feedback may help establish low f_{\mbox{cov}} in some cases,
whereas other processes may be important for GPs with low velocities. Finally,
we compare f_{\mbox{cov}} with proposed indicators of LyC escape. Ionizing
photon escape likely depends on a combination of neutral gas geometry and
kinematics, complicating the use of emission-line diagnostics for identifying

Self-handicapping mediates between impulsiveness and self-discipline
Self-handicapping, while not a very acknowledged tendency, is very prevalent today. Especially among students of any grade level, the behavior prevents many from reaching their full potential. The purpose of this experiment was to see how Selfhandicapping mediated between Impulsiveness and Self-discipline which can later be used by teachers to help students with this phenomenon. A short survey was given to psychology undergraduate students at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga whose age ranged from 18-44 and were predominantly Caucasian. Self-handicapping was found to mediate between Impulsiveness and Self-discipline (r = .512) compared to Impulsiveness and Self-discipline (r= .288) without using self-handicapping as a mediator. The implications that can be taken from this study include using the results in an educational setting to pinpoint selfhandicapping tendencies. Despite limitations in the study, it was conducted in an environment that was cohesive to the environment in which it would be applied
Numerical Models of Viscous Accretion Flows Near Black Holes
We report on a numerical study of viscous fluid accretion onto a black hole.
The flow is axisymmetric and uses a pseudo-Newtonian potential to model
relativistic effects near the event horizon. The numerical method is a variant
of the ZEUS code. As a test of our numerical scheme, we are able to reproduce
results from earlier, similar work by Igumenshchev and Abramowicz and Stone et
al. We consider models in which mass is injected onto the grid as well as
models in which an initial equilibrium torus is accreted. In each model we
measure three ``eigenvalues'' of the flow: the accretion rate of mass, angular
momentum, and energy. We find that the eigenvalues are sensitive to r_{in}, the
location of the inner radial boundary. Only when the flow is always supersonic
on the inner boundary are the eigenvalues insensitive to small changes in
r_{in}. We also report on the sensitivity of the results to other numerical

Cholinergic Modulation of Locomotion and Striatal Dopamine Release Is Mediated by α6α4* Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors
Dopamine (DA) release in striatum is governed by firing rates of midbrain DA neurons, striatal cholinergic tone, and nicotinic ACh
receptors (nAChRs) on DA presynaptic terminals. DA neurons selectively express α6* nAChRs, which show high ACh and nicotine
sensitivity. To help identify nAChR subtypes that control DA transmission, we studied transgenic mice expressing hypersensitive α6^(L9’S*)
receptors. α6^(L9’S) mice are hyperactive, travel greater distance, exhibit increased ambulatory behaviors such as walking, turning, and
rearing, and show decreased pausing, hanging, drinking, and grooming. These effects were mediated by α6 α4* pentamers, as α6^(L9’S) mice
lacking α4 subunits displayed essentially normal behavior. In α6^(L9’S) mice, receptor numbers are normal, but loss of α4 subunits leads to
fewer and less sensitive α6* receptors. Gain-of-function nicotine-stimulated DA release from striatal synaptosomes requires α4 subunits,
implicating α6α4β2* nAChRs in α6^(L9’S) mouse behaviors. In brain slices, we applied electrochemical measurements to study
control of DA release by α6^(L9’S) nAChRs. Burst stimulation of DA fibers elicited increased DA release relative to single action potentials
selectively in α6^(L9’S), but not WT or α4KO/ α6^(L9’S), mice. Thus, increased nAChR activity, like decreased activity, leads to enhanced
extracellular DA release during phasic firing. Bursts may directly enhance DA release from α6^(L9’S) presynaptic terminals, as there was no
difference in striatal DA receptor numbers or DA transporter levels or function in vitro. These results implicate α6α4β2* nAChRs in
cholinergic control of DA transmission, and strongly suggest that these receptors are candidate drug targets for disorders involving the
DA system
