Impact of Aluminum Chemistry and Order of Addition on Anionic Polyacrylamide Dry Strength Resins

    Get PDF
Greater improvements in dry strength values can be obtained by maintaining the system\u27s pH at the pH of precipitation formation, pHp. By using the pHp as the system\u27s pH, more aluminum can be adsorbed onto the fibers. With more aluminum adsorbed onto the fibers, there are more possible interaction sites for the polyacrylamide to be fixed between the fibers; and thereby give a higher dry strength response. An optimum level of polyacrylamide, .5% based on dry fiber,· was used in achieving maximum dry strength effectiveness. When the order of addition of the rosin, aluminum species, and polyacrylamide system was varied, no significant differences in dry strength results were apparent

An Investigation of the Relationships between Water Retention Additives and the Water Retention Mechanism

The purpose of this study was to examine how CMC, HEC and Kelgin QL function in their control of water retention. It is proposed that their performance can be related to the presence of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the hydrocolloid molecule. It was also proposed to study the effect of pigment selection on water retention. Water retention values (WRV) were measured on a modified S. D. Warren conductivity tester. It was concluded that the proposed theory represents a valid explanation of the water retention mechanism involving these additives. Differences in WRV of the additives was attributed to structural differences between the additive molecules. It was also concluded that no single factor-hydrophilic tendency, particle size, shape or distribution- could be identified to account for differences in WRV or improvement when pigment selection was varied

Do Religious Affirmations, Religious Commitments, or General Commitments Mitigate the Negative Effects of Exposure to Thin Ideals?

Western pressures for thinness tell women that having a thin body makes a person worthy. Two factors that may provide alternative means of self-worth are religion and general commitment to a meaningful goal. This study experimentally tested whether religious-affirming statements buffered against exposure to thin models for everyone, or only for women with strong religious commitment. It also examined the relationships among religious commitment, general commitment, and body satisfaction. One hundred eleven women at a religious-affiliated college completed the commitment scales and baseline body measures. They were later randomly assigned to read one set of affirming statements, after which they then completed body measures again. Results showed that religious commitment buffered against exposure to ultrathin models. Women who were strongly religiously committed and who read religious statements that affirmed the body showed higher body esteem. Correlation results showed that general commitment was positively related to body esteem, body satisfaction, and healthy dieting. Religious commitment was positively related to body esteem and body satisfaction. Results are discussed in relation to schemas and depth of processing. Practical implications are discussed

Historical and Musical Comparison of Cello Works by David Stanley Smith and the Fourth Violin Sonata by Charles Ives

    Get PDF
David Stanley Smith is overlooked among American composers of the early twentieth century. Overshadowed by the career and magnetism of his Yale colleague and contemporary, Charles Ives, Smith was an illustrious composer of absolute music of the early twentieth century. The intent of this document is to compare and contrast the compositional styles of both Smith and Ives and present an argument as to why Ives’s music is more frequently performed and researched, while Smith’s music is largely forgotten. This document will compare and contrast Smith and Ives using Smith’s Sonata for Violoncello and Piano, Op. 59 and his Three Poems for Violoncello and Piano, Op. 97bis, and Ives’s Fourth Violin Sonata. This document will also compare their backgrounds and education, their work lives, their compositional styles and choices, and their reception in their lifetime
