Cognitive skills and their transfer: Discussion
Transfer is involved in all learning, remembering, problem solving and cognitive activities. Thus we need to think of dimensions and extent of transfer rather than simply consider transfer versus non-transfer. Moreover, we should consider transfer of motivation as well as transfer of learned cognitions if we are to understand transfer of learning in educational situations and be helpful to educators. Metacognitive, as well as cognitive, strategies are useful in facilitating transfer in many situations even though they may overload or interfere with transfer in situations where automatized responses are appropriate. We need research to determine when metacognition should be called into play. Experiences of using an interactive audience response system in lectures
BACKGROUND: Lectures are good for presenting information and providing explanations, but because they lack active participation they have been neglected. METHODS: Students' experiences were evaluated after exposing them to the use of voting during lectures in their paediatrics course. Questions were delivered to the students taking paediatrics course. Thirty-six students out of the total of 40 (90%) attended the opening lecture, at which the first survey concerning previous experiences of lectures was performed. Thirty-nine students (98%) answered the second series of questions at the end of the paediatrics course. RESULTS: Most of the students felt that voting improved their activity during lectures, enhanced their learning, and that it was easier to make questions during lectures than earlier. CONCLUSIONS: The students gained new, exciting insights much more often during the paediatrics course than before. We as teachers found that voting during lectures could easily overcome some of the obstacles of good lecturing
The effect of multiple internal representations on context rich instruction
This paper presents n-coding, a theoretical model of multiple internal mental
representations. The n-coding construct is developed from a review of cognitive
and imaging studies suggesting the independence of information processing along
different modalities: verbal, visual, kinesthetic, social, etc. A study testing
the effectiveness of the n-coding construct in an algebra-based mechanics
course is presented. Four sections differing in the level of n-coding
opportunities were compared. Besides a traditional instruction section used as
a control group, each of the remaining three treatment sections were given
context rich problems following the 'cooperative group problem solving'
approach which differed by the level of n-coding opportunities designed into
their laboratory environment. To measure the effectiveness of the construct,
problem solving skills were assessed as was conceptual learning using the Force
Concept Inventory. However, a number of new measures taking into account
students' confidence in concepts were developed to complete the picture of
student learning. Results suggest that using the developed n-coding construct
to design context rich environments can generate learning gains in problem
solving, conceptual knowledge and concept-confidence.Comment: Submitted to the American Journal of Physic
"Then you get a teacher" - Guidelines for excellence in teaching
Background: Current literature calls for the explicit teaching to health-science educators of the skills, knowledge and dispositions
that are required for successful teaching in higher education.
Aims: This paper draws on evidence from an Oral Hygiene department at a South African university in order to
illustrate these teaching-competency needs. Insights from the evidence are synthesised with current literature regarding best
teaching practice, in support of an appropriate framework for the development of teaching competencies to health-science
educators.
Description: A qualitative approach, using a case study, was adopted. The cohort comprised fifteen students in the first-year Oral
Hygiene cohort class and the ten educators who taught their programme. Data was collected through semistructured interviews
and open-ended questionnaires. The topics that emerged from the combined analysis of the interviews and the questionnaires
were organised into a grid so that common themes could be identified. Current literature regarding teaching and learning was used
as a framework for interpreting the empirical evidence, from which three categories emerged. The first category included
suggestions from students regarding what to do to teach better. A review of the literature indicates that these competencies can be
effectively learnt from self-help guides. The second category included requests for skills development. Literature review suggests
that these might effectively be learnt from single-event workshops facilitated by more able peers. Responses in the final category
highlighted the need for an underpinning theory of teaching and learning, and signalled the need for a more theoretically
grounded and detailed approach to teacher development.
Conclusion: The framework developed from the empirical study and current literature makes it possible for individual clinical
teachers, and staff developers, to construct teaching-competency development plans that are pertinent to individual teachers’
needs, relevant and practical, educationally sound, and cost-effective in terms of time and effort
An agenda for rethinking mid-career master programs in public administration
The pace of societal change and the development of societal challenges have speeded up considerably during the last couple of decades, with substantial impact on different levels, i.e. ranging from global to local, or from business to government. When focusing on the public domain, these changes and challenges have had a major impact on public professionals, who face different and frequently changing questions. Mid-career programs in Public Administration (MPA) have the mission to support enrolled professionals in dealing with these changes and challenges. This article is about the development of such MPAs. Both substantive and didactic development is needed. To counter institutional inertia it seems vital to institutionalize a regular rethinking and adaptation of curricula and didactic strategies. This article identified some important points of attention and some options to deal with these in order to continuously improve the contribution of MPA programs to relevant and effective professional development and ongoing professional learning
Incorporating Genomics and Bioinformatics across the Life Sciences Curriculum
Undergraduate life sciences education needs an overhaul, as clearly described in the National Research Council of the National Academies’ publication BIO 2010: Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists. Among BIO 2010’s top recommendations is the need to involve students in working with real data and tools that reflect the nature of life sciences research in the 21st century [1]. Education research studies support the importance of utilizing primary literature, designing and implementing experiments, and analyzing results in the context of a bona fide scientific question [1–12] in cultivating the analytical skills necessary to become a scientist. Incorporating these basic scientific methodologies in undergraduate education leads to increased undergraduate and post-graduate retention in the sciences [13–16]. Toward this end, many undergraduate teaching organizations offer training and suggestions for faculty to update and improve their teaching approaches to help students learn as scientists, through design and discovery (e.g., Council of Undergraduate Research [www.cur.org] and Project Kaleidoscope [ www.pkal.org])
Exploring factors affecting undergraduate medical students’ study strategies in the clinical years: a qualitative study
The aim of this study is to explore the effects of clinical supervision, and assessment characteristics on the study strategies used by undergraduate medical students during their clinical rotations. We conducted a qualitative phenomenological study at King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, College of Medicine, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia during the period from November 2007 to December 2008. We conducted semi-structured focus groups interviews with students and conducted individual interviews with teachers and students to explore students’ and clinical teachers’ perceptions and interpretations of factors influencing students’ study strategies. Data collection was continued until saturation was reached. We used Atlas-ti Computer Software (Version 5.2) to analyse the data, apply the obtained themes to the whole dataset and rearrange the data according to the themes and sub-themes. Analysis of data from interviews with twenty-eight students and thirteen clinical supervisors yielded three major themes relating to factors affecting students’ study strategies: “clinical supervisors and supervision”, “stress and anxiety” and “assessment”. The three themes we identified played a role in students’ adoption of different study strategies in the “community of clinical practice”. It appeared that teachers played a key role, particularly as assessors, clinical supervisors and as a source of stress to students
Faculty evaluation: Reliability of peer assessments of research, teaching, and service
In this paper, assessments of faculty performance for the determination of salary increases are analyzed to estimate interrater reliability. Using the independent ratings by six elected members of the faculty, correlations between the ratings are calculated and estimates of the reliability of the composite (group) ratings are generated. Average intercorrelations are found to range from 0.603 for teaching, to 0.850 for research. The average intercorrelation for the overall faculty ratings is 0.794. Using these correlations, the reliability of the six-person group (the composite reliability) is estimated to be over 0.900 for each of the three areas and 0.959 for the overall faculty rating. Furthermore, little correlation is found between the ratings of performance levels of individual faculty members in the three areas of research, teaching, and service. The high intercorrelations and, consequently, the high composite reliabilities suggest that a reduction in the number of raters would have relatively small effects on reliability.
