The Spin-Statistics Connection from Homology Groups of Configuration Space and an Anyon Wess-Zumino Term

    Get PDF
The first and second homology groups H_i for configuration spaces of framed two-dimensional particles and antiparticles, with annihilation included, are computed when up to two particles and an antiparticle are present. The set of ‘frames’ considered are S^2, SO(2) and SO(3). It is found that the H_1 groups are those of the ‘frames’ and are generated by a cycle corresponding to a 2π frame rotation. This same cycle is homologous to the exchange path -the spin -statistics theorem. Furthermore for the frame space SO(2), H_2 contains a Z subgroup which implies the existence of a nontrivial Wess-Zumino term. A rotationally and translationally invariant, topologically nontrivial Wess-Zumino term for a pair of anyons and an antianyon is exhibited for this case

Principles for progress : essays on religion and modernity by `Abdu'l-BahĂĄ

This book presents three of the works of AbduÊŸl-Bahā, son of the founder of the Bahāʟi Faith, dealing with social and political issues. In The Secret of Divine Civilization (1875) AbduÊŸl-Bahā supports the administrative and broader social reforms of Mirzā Hosayn Khān, but looks mainly for organic reform through the efforts of Iranian intellectuals to waken and educate the masses. In this work, AbduÊŸl-Bahā gives virtuous and progressive Islamic clerics a leading role among these intellectuals, indeed most of his appeals are directed specifically to them. A Traveller’s Narrative (1889/90) is an authoritative statement of the broad lines of Bahā’i social and political thinking. The Art of Governance (1892/93) was written as Iran entered a pre-revolutionary phase, and ideas that we recognise today as the precursors of political Islam were spreading. It sets out the principles underlying the ideal relationship between religion and politics and between the government and the people. In addition to presenting the first parallel text translations of these works, the Persian texts incorporate notes on variants in the early published sources. An introduction outlines the intellectual and political landscape from which AbduÊŸl-Bahā wrote, and in which his expected readers lived.Critical editions, translation [from the Arabic] and introduction by Sen McGlinn9789400603202 (ePdf)Wetensch. publicatie9789400603219 (ePub

    Topological Spin-Statistics Theorem for Strings

    Get PDF
Recently, a topological proof of the spin-statistics Theorem has been proposed for a system of point particles which does not require relativity or field theory, but assumes the existence of antiparticles. We extend this proof to a system of string loops in three space dimensions and show that by assuming the existence of antistring loops, one can prove a spin-statistics theorem for these string loops. According to this theorem, all unparametrized strings(such as flux tubes in superconductors and cosmic strings ) should be quantized as bosons. Also, as in the point particle case, we find that the theorem excludes nonabelian statistics.Comment: 15p
