    2-Server PIR with sub-polynomial communication

    A 2-server Private Information Retrieval (PIR) scheme allows a user to retrieve the iith bit of an nn-bit database replicated among two servers (which do not communicate) while not revealing any information about ii to either server. In this work we construct a 1-round 2-server PIR with total communication cost nO(loglogn/logn)n^{O({\sqrt{\log\log n/\log n}})}. This improves over the currently known 2-server protocols which require O(n1/3)O(n^{1/3}) communication and matches the communication cost of known 3-server PIR schemes. Our improvement comes from reducing the number of servers in existing protocols, based on Matching Vector Codes, from 3 or 4 servers to 2. This is achieved by viewing these protocols in an algebraic way (using polynomial interpolation) and extending them using partial derivatives

    Bulge RR Lyrae stars in the VVV tile b201\textit{b201}

    The VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) Survey is one of the six ESO public surveys currently ongoing at the VISTA telescope on Cerro Paranal, Chile. VVV uses near-IR (ZYJHKsZYJHK_{\rm s}) filters that at present provide photometry to a depth of Ks17.0K_{\rm s} \sim 17.0 mag in up to 36 epochs spanning over four years, and aim at discovering more than 106^6 variable sources as well as trace the structure of the Galactic bulge and part of the southern disk. A variability search was performed to find RR Lyrae variable stars. The low stellar density of the VVV tile b201\textit{b201}, which is centered at (,b\ell, b) \sim (9,9-9^\circ, -9^\circ), makes it suitable to search for variable stars. Previous studies have identified some RR Lyrae stars using optical bands that served to test our search procedure. The main goal is to measure the reddening, interstellar extinction, and distances of the RR Lyrae stars and to study their distribution on the Milky Way bulge. A total of 1.5 sq deg were analyzed, and we found 39 RR Lyrae stars, 27 of which belong to the ab-type and 12 to the c-type. Our analysis recovers all the previously identified RR Lyrae variables in the field and discovers 29 new RR Lyrae stars. The reddening and extinction toward all the RRab stars in this tile were derived, and distance estimations were obtained through the period--luminosity relation. Despite the limited amount of RR Lyrae stars studied, our results are consistent with a spheroidal or central distribution around 8.1\sim 8.1 and 8.5\sim 8.5 kpc. for either the Cardelli or Nishiyama extinction law.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Observations of galactic cosmic ray energy spectra between 1 and 9 AU

    The variation of the 5 to 500 MeV/nuc cosmic ray helium component was studied between 1 and 9 A.U. using essentially identical detector systems on Pioneer 10 and 11 and Helios I. Between 100 and 200 MeV/nuc a radial gradient of 3.3?1.3%/A.U. is found. At 15 MeV/nuc this value increases to 20?4%/A.U. Between 4 and 9 A.U. a well defined intensity maximum is observed at approximately 17 MeV/nuc. The average adiabatic energy loss between 1 and 9 A.U. is approximately 4 MeV/nuc/A.U. The observed radial variation between 1 and 9 A.U. is well described by the Gleeson-Axford force field solution of the modulation equations over an energy range extending from 15 to 500 MeV/nuc and is in good agreement with the results reported by other Pioneer experiments. These values are much smaller than had been theoretically predicted
