    The News Media And Public Opinion: The Press Coverage Of U.S. International Conflicts And Its Effect On Presidental Approval

    A standing phenomenon exists in the fields of both political science and communication studies regarding the impact that the news media have on public opinion. This study recognizes the average American citizens\u27 reliance on the press to gain information about international conflicts. Hence, it is theorized that news reports on a political occurrence could very well influence the mass-level opinion of an event such that positive news stories generate positive public opinion, and vice versa. Since foreign crises define a presidency in the public\u27s minds, presidential approval ratings determine the degree to which the news media manipulate public opinion. Specifically, news media coverage of two international conflicts, the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars, are analyzed in light of their effect on American citizens\u27 public opinion of Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and George H. W. Bush, respectively

    2010 Status of the Lake Ontario Lower Trophic Levels

    This report presents data on the status of lower trophic level components of the Lake Ontario ecosystem (zooplankton, phytoplankton, nutrients) in 2010 and compares the 2010 data with available time series. Lower trophic levels are indicators of ecosystem health [as identified by the Lake Ontario Pelagic Community Health Indicator Committee (EPA 1993) and presented in the biennial State of the Lake Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC) reports] and determine the lake’s ability to support the prey fish upon which both wild and stocked salmonids depend. Understanding the production potential of lower trophic levels is also integral to ecosystem-based management. Continued evaluation of lower trophic levels is particularly important for fisheries management, as the observed declines in alewife and Chinook salmon in Lake Huron in 2003 may have been partly the result of changes in lower trophic levels (Barbiero et al. 2009)

    Interpretation of positive troponin results among patients with and without myocardial infarction.

    Measuring cardiac troponins is integral to diagnosing acute myocardial infarction (AMI); however, troponins may be elevated without AMI, and the use of multiple different assays confounds comparisons. We considered characteristics and serial troponin values in emergency department chest pain patients with and without AMI to interpret troponin excursions. We compared serial troponin in 124 AMI and non-AMI patients from the observational Performance of Triage Cardiac Markers in the Clinical Setting (PEARL) study who presented with chest pain and had at least one troponin value exceeding the 99th percentile of normal. Because 8 assays were used during data collection, we employed a method of scaling the troponin value to the corresponding assay\u27s 99th percentile upper reference limit to standardize the results. In 81 AMI patients, 96% had elevated troponin at the first test following initial elevation, compared to 73% of the 43 non-AMI patients

    Spatiotemporal control of mitosis by the conserved spindle matrix protein Megator

    A putative spindle matrix has been hypothesized to mediate chromosome motion, but its existence and functionality remain controversial. In this report, we show that Megator (Mtor), the Drosophila melanogaster counterpart of the human nuclear pore complex protein translocated promoter region (Tpr), and the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) protein Mad2 form a conserved complex that localizes to a nuclear derived spindle matrix in living cells. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching experiments supports that Mtor is retained around spindle microtubules, where it shows distinct dynamic properties. Mtor/Tpr promotes the recruitment of Mad2 and Mps1 but not Mad1 to unattached kinetochores (KTs), mediating normal mitotic duration and SAC response. At anaphase, Mtor plays a role in spindle elongation, thereby affecting normal chromosome movement. We propose that Mtor/Tpr functions as a spatial regulator of the SAC, which ensures the efficient recruitment of Mad2 to unattached KTs at the onset of mitosis and proper spindle maturation, whereas enrichment of Mad2 in a spindle matrix helps confine the action of a diffusible “wait anaphase” signal to the vicinity of the spindle
