Method and apparatus for holding two separate metal pieces together for welding
A method of holding two separate metal pieces together for welding is described including the steps of overlapping a portion of one of the metal pieces on a portion of the other metal piece, encasing the overlapping metal piece in a compressible device, drawing the compressible device into an enclosure, and compressing a portion of the compressible device around the overlapping portions of the metal pieces for holding the metal pieces under constant and equal pressure during welding. The preferred apparatus for performing the method utilizes a support mechanism to support the two separate metal pieces in an overlapping configuration; a compressible device surrounding the support mechanism and at least one of the metal pieces, and a compressing device surrounding the compressible device for compressing the compressible device around the overlapping portions of the metal pieces, thus providing constant and equal pressure at all points on the overlapping portions of the metal pieces
Medium and large-scale variations of dynamo-induced electric fields from AE ion drift measurements
Current models of the low latitude electric field are largely based on data from incoherent scatter radars. These observations are extended through the addition of the rather extensive high quality electric field measurements from the Ion Drift Meter (IDM) aboard the Atmosphere Explorer (AE) spacecraft. Some preliminary results obtained from the Unified Abstract files of satellite AE-E are presented. This satellite was active from the end of 1975 through June 1981 in various elliptical and circular orbits having an inclination near 20 deg. The resulting data can be examined for the variation of ion drift with latitude, longitude, season, solar cycle, altitude, and magnetic activity. The results presented deal primarily with latitudinal variations of the drift features. Diagrams of data are given and briefly interpreted. The preliminary results presented here indicate that IDM data from the AE and the more recent Dynamics Explorer B spacecraft should continue to disclose some interesting and previously unobserved dynamical features of the low latitude F region
Preparation of monotectic alloys having a controlled microstructure by directional solidification under dopant-induced interface breakdown
Monotectic alloys having aligned spherical particles of rods of the minor component dispersed in a matrix of the major component are prepared by forming a melt containing predetermined amounts of the major and minor components of a chosen monotectic system, providing in the melt a dopant capable of breaking down the liquid solid interface for the chosen alloy, and directionally solidfying the melt at a selected temperature gradient and a selected rate of movement of the liquid-solid interface (growth rate). Shaping of the minor component into spheres or rods and the spacing between them are controlled by the amount of dopant and the temperature gradient and growth rate values. Specific alloy systems include Al Bi, Al Pb and Zn Bi, using a transition element such as iron

Book Censorship and Its Threat to Critical Inquiry in Social Studies Education
This article argues that recent advances in book censorship in the United States point to a threat to critical inquiry pedagogy in social studies education— a content area aiming to prepare learners for active and engaged citizenship in a pluralistic, democratic society. To support this argument, the article offers a description of critical inquiry pedagogy and explains how critical inquiry is connected to social studies education. It provides examples of two recently censored children’s literature books listed on Pen America’s (2022) Index of School Book Bans and it explains what these books may offer social studies education. It then suggests that the censorship of these books stifles critical inquiry in social studies classrooms. The article explores possible next steps that social studies educators, and advocates of social studies education, could take to address the uptick in book censorship, and it closes with a brief conclusion
ANALYSIS OF DOMAIN-SPECIFIC NUCLEAR ONTOLOGY USING MONTEREY PHOENIX BEHAVIOR MODELING
Current nuclear energy ontologies are known to lack a common vocabulary to formally verify nuclear energy data relationships for modeling system behaviors. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) developed the Data Integration Aggregated Model and Ontology for Nuclear Deployment (DIAMOND) ontology to provide a standard vocabulary and taxonomy for identifying data relationships in nuclear energy system models. This thesis conducted an analysis of DIAMOND using a Spent Fuel Pool (SFP) Monterey Phoenix (MP) behavior model. The SFP MP behavior modeling application demonstrated components of and interactions among a spent fuel cooling pool and its environment. The MP behavior model demonstrated a viable approach for analyzing nuclear reactor system behavior consistent with DIAMOND and the ability to generate the exhaustive set of nuclear reactor cooling pool behavior scenarios. The results supported the ability of DIAMOND definitions to be used to organize and structure knowledge about SFP’s normal and off-normal behaviors. The SPF example showed the application of assets, actions, and triggers from DIAMOND to events and relationships in MP. Assets and actions were represented as MP events, and triggers were represented as precedence relations between MP events. This thesis research verified the DIAMOND ontology was implemented correctly in the model from data representative of operationally realistic behavior and the modeling results validated the MP behavior model was well constrained.Idaho National LabCivilian, Department of the Air ForceApproved for public release.
