Network sensitivity to geographical configuration
Gravitational wave astronomy will require the coordinated analysis of data
from the global network of gravitational wave observatories. Questions of how
to optimally configure the global network arise in this context. We have
elsewhere proposed a formalism which is employed here to compare different
configurations of the network, using both the coincident network analysis
method and the coherent network analysis method. We have constructed a network
model to compute a figure-of-merit based on the detection rate for a population
of standard-candle binary inspirals. We find that this measure of network
quality is very sensitive to the geographic location of component detectors
under a coincident network analysis, but comparatively insensitive under a

Progress in GaAs/CuInSe2 tandem junction solar cells
Much more power is required for spacecraft of the future than current vehicles. To meet this increased demand for power while simultaneously meeting other requirements for launch, deployment, and maneuverability, the development of higher-efficiency, lighter-weight, and more radiation resistant photovoltaic cells is essential. Mechanically stacked tandem junction solar cells based on (AlGaAs)GaAs thin film CLEFT (Cleavage of Lateral Epitaxial Film for Transfer) top cells and CuInSe2(CIS) thin film bottom cells are being developed to meet these power needs. The mechanically stacked tandem configuration is chosen due to its interconnect flexibility allowing more efficient array level performance. It also eliminates cell fabrication processing constraints associated with monolithically integrated multi-junction approaches, thus producing higher cell fabrication yields. The GaAs cell is used as the top cell due to its demonstrated high efficiency, and good radiation resistance. Furthermore, it offers a future potential for bandgap tuning using AlGaAs as the absorber to maximize cell performance. The CuInSe2 cell is used as the bottom cell due to superb radiation resistance, stability, and optimal bandgap value in combination with an AlGaAs top cell. Since both cells are incorporated as thin films, this approach provides a potential for very high specific power. This high specific power (W/kg), combined with high power density (W/sq m) resulting from the high efficiency of this approach, makes these cells ideally suited for various space applications
Stabilization of injection-locked lasers using spatial mode interference
We report the use of spatial-mode-interference, or tilt-locking, for the active stabilization of injection-locking of a Nd:YAG laser. Narrow-line magneto-optical cooling and trapping of strongly magnetic atoms
Laser cooling on weak transitions is a useful technique for reaching
ultracold temperatures in atoms with multiple valence electrons. However, for
strongly magnetic atoms a conventional narrow-line magneto-optical trap (MOT)
is destabilized by competition between optical and magnetic forces. We overcome
this difficulty in Er by developing an unusual narrow-line MOT that balances
optical and magnetic forces using laser light tuned to the blue side of a
narrow (8 kHz) transition. The trap population is spin-polarized with
temperatures reaching below 2 microkelvin. Our results constitute an
alternative method for laser cooling on weak transitions, applicable to

Is Entrepreneurial Success Predictable? An Ex-Ante Analysis of the Character-Based Approach
This paper empirically analyzes whether the character-based approach, which focuses on the personality structure and the human capital of business founders, allows prediction of entrepreneurial success. A unique data set is used consisting of 414 persons whose personal characteristics were analyzed by different methods, namely an one-day assessment center (AC) and a standardized questionnaire, before they launched their business. Results are partly unexpected and weaker than previous ex-post findings: first, we found correlations between the AC data and the questionnaire in one subgroup only. Second, the predictive power of the AC data is slightly better than that of the questionnaire, but lower than expected in theory. Interestingly, for those subgroups where the AC data have low predictive power, the questionnaire does better. Third, when success is measured in terms of employees hired, the character-based approach is a poor predictor. Copyright 2008 The Authors.
Compensation of Strong Thermal Lensing in High Optical Power Cavities
In an experiment to simulate the conditions in high optical power advanced
gravitational wave detectors such as Advanced LIGO, we show that strong thermal
lenses form in accordance with predictions and that they can be compensated
using an intra-cavity compensation plate heated on its cylindrical surface. We
show that high finesse ~1400 can be achieved in cavities with internal
compensation plates, and that the cavity mode structure can be maintained by
thermal compensation. It is also shown that the measurements allow a direct
measurement of substrate optical absorption in the test mass and the

Atom lithography using MRI-type feature placement
We demonstrate the use of frequency-encoded light masks in neutral atom
lithography. We demonstrate that multiple features can be patterned across a
monotonic potential gradient. Features as narrow as 0.9 microns are fabricated
on silicon substrates with a metastable argon beam. Internal state manipulation
with such a mask enables continuously adjustable feature positions and feature
densities not limited by the optical wavelength, unlike previous light masks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Human Ό-calpain: Simple isolation from erythrocytes and characterization of autolysis fragments
Heterodimeric ÎŒ-calpain, consisting of the large (80 kDa) and the small (30 kDa) subunit, was isolated and purified from human erythrocytes by a highly reproducible four-step purification procedure. Obtained material is more than 95% pure and has a specific activity of 6 - 7 mU/mg. Presence of contaminating proteins could not be detected by HPLC and sequence analysis. During storage at -80 °C the enzyme remains fully activatable by CaÂČâș, although the small subunit is partially processed to a 22 kDa fragment. This novel autolysis product of the small subunit starts with the sequence (60)RILG and is further processed to the known 18 kDa fragment. Active forms and typical transient and stable autolysis products of the large subunit were identified by protein sequencing. In casein-zymograms only the activatable forms 80 kDa+30 kDa, 80 kDa+22 kDa and 80 kDa+18 kDa displayed caseinolysis
Experimental demonstration of a squeezing enhanced power recycled Michelson interferometer for gravitational wave detection
Interferometric gravitational wave detectors are expected to be limited by
shot noise at some frequencies. We experimentally demonstrate that a power
recycled Michelson with squeezed light injected into the dark port can overcome
this limit. An improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of 2.3dB is measured
and locked stably for long periods of time. The configuration, control and
signal readout of our experiment are compatible with current gravitational wave
detector designs. We consider the application of our system to long baseline
interferometer designs such as LIGO.Comment: 4 pages 4 figure
Power Versus Affiliation in Political Ideology
Posited motivational differences between liberals and conservatives have historically been controversial. This motivational interface has recently been bridged, but the vast majority of studies have used self-reports of values or motivation. Instead, the present four studies investigated whether two classic social motive themesâpower and affiliationâvary by political ideology in objective linguistic analysis terms. Study 1 found that posts to liberal chat rooms scored higher in standardized affiliation than power, whereas the reverse was true of posts to conservative chat rooms. Study 2 replicated this pattern in the context of materials posted to liberal versus conservative political news websites. Studies 3 and 4, finally, replicated a similar interactive (ideology by motive type) pattern in State of the State and State of the Union addresses. Differences in political ideology, these results suggest, are marked by, and likely reflective of, mind-sets favoring affiliation (liberal) or power (conservative). </jats:p
