    Life History Aspects of \u3ci\u3eAnthopotamus Verticis\u3c/i\u3e (Ephemeroptera: Potamanthidae)

    The study of the larval development and life cycle of a population of the mayfly Anthopotamus verticis from the Tippecanoe River, Indiana was based on monthly and weekly sampling in 1990 and 1991. Larval head width and tusk length were directly correlated with body size; whereas wingpad development represented an exponential relationship with body size. Relative maturation of larvae was efficiently assessed, however. by using wingpad development. The morphology of eggs is described. Larval growth and development took place mainly from March to Au~st. Although emergence is protracted from mid-July to mid-August, the major recruitment of new larvae occurred in August. Only one cohort was ascertained. The species overwinters as mostly young larvae. The simple univoltine life cycle appears to be related to seasonal temperature

    A Phenomenological Approach to Examining Perceptions of Middle School Students and Their Educators about Their Service-learning Experiences

    A primary purpose of public education is to ensure that all citizens have the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to participate in a democracy. Service learning is a democratic, constructivist, instructional strategy that connects academic learning with community needs. This phenomenological study described: (a) how youth, their educators, and community partners who experience service learning perceive its effects on themselves, their schools, and their community lives and (b) how professional-development opportunities need to be structured in order to encourage high quality civics education instruction. The problem this study addressed was how to solve youth civic and political disengagement. This study relied heavily upon in-depth interviews of nine middle school students, six middle school educators, and one community partner from a rural community in the northeastern United States. In addition, participant journals and grant documents were reviewed. Rubin and Rubin\u27s guidelines and Tesh\u27s eight step coding process were used to analyze each transcript, journal, and document. Results showed that service learning promoted the application of academic content, motivated students, appealed to various learning styles, built relationships, encouraged collaboration, and provided leadership opportunities. By better understanding the benefits and challenges of service learning projects as described by participants, this study could facilitate positive social change and improvements to current civic education instruction, including higher quality service-learning projects. By working collaboratively, youth, educators, and community partners can address the problem of youth disengagement from civic and political life, thus ensuring the continuation of a healthy democracy

    Security-oriented infrastructures for social simulation

    The JISC-funded National e-Infrastructure for Social Simulation (NeISS) project aims to develop and provide new services to social scientists and public/private sector policymakers interested in “what-if” questions that have an impact upon society and can be tackled through social simulation. For the first what-if question, a traffic simulation modelling how congestion will affect routes within a city or region projected across a time-span of decades has been identified. This paper describes the work that has been done in implementing a secure, user-oriented environment that provides seamless access to relevant nationally significant data sets such as the 2001 Census and demographic transition statistics from the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) , and a Population Reconstruction Model (PRM) simulator, which simulates a population of individuals or households based upon these data sets

    Barbaetis: A New Genus of Eastern Nearctic Mayflies (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae)

    The new genus Barbaetis Waltz and McCafferty, and new species Barbaetis benfieldi Kennedy are described from larvae collected from the New River, Virginia. Barbaetis is easily told from Baetis by the presence of procoxal osmobranchia. Cladistics of B. benfieldi, related Pseudocloeon species, and the lutheri and pavidus complexes of Baetis are presented and indicate the need for further taxonomic revision. The habitat of B. benfieldi is described in terms of several ecological parameters. The new species demonstrates a univoltine life history with postembryonic development restricted to a short springtime period
