Evangelicalism and the socialist revival: a study of religion, community and culture in nineteenth century Airdrie
This thesis explores the relationship between
Evangelicalism and the Socialist Revival by way of a study
of religion, community and culture in the Scottish town of
Airdrie, 1790-1914. Chapter One presents an overview of
Evangelicalism in the nineteenth century. The links
between Evangelicalism and the Socialist Revival are
discussed in Chapter Two where it is argued that Socialist
Revivalism, especially as manifest by the Independent
Labour Party, was a product of Evangelical-mission culture.
Chapter Three looks at the development of Airdrie as a
weaving community from the 1790s to 1820s, and Chapter Four
examines the role of Evangelicalism and dissent in the
construction of community and culture in weaving Airdrie.
Chapters Five and Six outline the transformation of Airdrie
from a weaving to an industrial town. As in introductory
survey of the space that religion occupied in Airdrie from
the 1820s, Chapter Seven paves the way for detailed
examination, in Chapters Eight and Nine, of the continuing
importance of Evangelicalism and dissent in shaping
community and culture at Airdrie during the 1830s and
1840s. Chapter Ten considers the impact of the Disruption
and of the 1859 revival in Airdrie, and suggests that these
events consolidated the burgh's Evangelical Protestant and
dissenting identity. Chapter Eleven outlines the
development of Airdrie during the late nineteenth-early
twentieth centuries and examines the efforts of the ILP to
establish a foothold in the town. It is argued that the
failure of the ILP in Airdrie was as much a
consequence of
the embeddedness of Evangelicalism and dissent in local
culture as of party political or organisational weakness.
Chapter Twelve brings this argument to a conclusion through
a consideration of the diffusion of Evangelicalism
throughout Airdrie's rich associational culture. It is
suggested that because the ILP was competing in Airdrie as
just one more Evangelical-revivalist organisation against
other, older, better-established Evangelical organisations,
its progress was hindered. There was no room for it in
Airdrie's Evangelical-mission culture

A Stochastic Multiscale Model of Cardiac Thin Filament Activation Using Brownian-Langevin Dynamics.
We use Brownian-Langevin dynamics principles to derive a coarse-graining multiscale myofilament model that can describe the thin-filament activation process during contraction. The model links atomistic molecular simulations of protein-protein interactions in the thin-filament regulatory unit to sarcomere-level activation dynamics. We first calculate the molecular interaction energy between tropomyosin and actin surface using Brownian dynamics simulations. This energy profile is then generalized to account for the observed tropomyosin transitions between its regulatory stable states. The generalized energy landscape then served as a basis for developing a filament-scale model using Langevin dynamics. This integrated analysis, spanning molecular to thin-filament scales, is capable of tracking the events of the tropomyosin conformational changes as it moves over the actin surface. The tropomyosin coil with flexible overlap regions between adjacent tropomyosins is represented in the model as a system of coupled stochastic ordinary differential equations. The proposed multiscale approach provides a more detailed molecular connection between tropomyosin dynamics, the trompomyosin-actin interaction-energy landscape, and the generated force by the sarcomere
Structure and magnetic properties of the cubic oxide fluoride BaFeO2F
Fluorination of the parent oxide, BaFeO3- δ, with polyvinylidine fluoride gives rise to a cubic compound with a = 4.0603(4) Å at 298K. 57Fe Mössbauer spectra confirmed that all the iron is present as Fe3+. Neutron diffraction data showed complete occupancy of the anion sites indicating a composition BaFeO2F, with a large displacement of the iron off-site. The magnetic ordering temperature was determined as TN = 645±5K. Neutron diffraction data at 4.2K established G-type antiferromagnetism with a magnetic moment per Fe3+ ion of 3.95μB. However, magnetisation measurements indicated the presence of a weak ferromagnetic moment which is assigned to the canting of the antiferromagnetic structure. 57Fe Mössbauer spectra in the temperature range 10 to 300K were fitted with a model of fluoride ion distribution that retains charge neutrality of the perovskite unit cel
Personality characteristics are independently associated with prospective memory in the laboratory, and in daily life, among older adults
Prospective memory (PM) can deteriorate with age and adversely influence health behaviours. Research suggests that personality is related to PM in healthy young adults, but we know little about the role of personality in the PM amongst older adults. Community-dwelling older adults (N = 152) completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3 and PM measures. After adjusting for demographics and general cognition, higher neuroticism and lower levels of openness were independently associated with lower objectively-measured time- and event-based PM. Lower conscientiousness was the only personality predictor of self-reported everyday PM failures. Findings indicate that personality plays a role in PM functioning in the laboratory and daily life
