A New Elimination Rule for the Calculus of Inductive Constructions

Published in the post-proceedings of TYPES but actually not presented orally to the conferenceInternational audienceIn Type Theory, definition by dependently-typed case analysis can be expressed by means of a set of equations ā€” the semantic approach ā€” or by an explicit pattern-matching construction ā€” the syntactic approach. We aim at putting together the best of both approaches by extending the pattern-matching construction found in the Coq proof assistant in order to obtain the expressivity and flexibility of equation-based case analysis while remaining in a syntax-based setting, thus making dependently-typed programming more tractable in the Coq system. We provide a new rule that permits the omission of impossible cases, handles the propagation of inversion constraints, and allows to derive Streicher's K axiom. We show that subject reduction holds, and sketch a proof of relative consistency

Community experiences of organised crime in Scotland

The research explored community experiences of serious organised crime in Scotland (SOC). The report provides information on the nature and extent of the impact of SOC on everyday life in the community, as well as offering suggestions for policy development. The study sought to answer the following questions: 1)What are the relationships that exist between SOC and communities in Scotland? 2)What are the experiences and perceptions of residents, stakeholders and organisations of the scope and nature of SOC within their local area? and 3)How does SOC impact on community wellbeing, and to what extent can the harms associated with SOC be mitigated

Religionā€™s Impact on the Mental Health of Seventh-Day Adventist College Students

Depression and anxiety rates among college students are increasing around the world. This paper will examine results of a 2018 survey that found high rates of depression and anxiety among Adventist College students as well as results from a focus group follow-up study that helped to explain those results. Our objective is to examine the positive and negative influence of religion on the mental health of Seventh-day Adventist college students

Insertion of an uncharged polypeptide into the mitochondrial inner membrane does not require a trans-bilayer electrochemical potential: effects of positive charges

AbstractMitochondria with a ruptured outer membrane exhibited impaired import into this membrane of an outer membrane fusion protein containing the signal-anchor sequence of Mas70p. However, the Mas70p signal-anchor efficiently targeted and inserted the protein directly into exposed regions of the inner membrane. Import into the inner membrane was dependent on Ī“Ļˆ and this dependence was due to the presence of the positively-charged amino acids located at positions 2, 7, and 9 of the signal-anchor. In contrast to wild-type signal-anchor, mutants lacking the positively-charged residues mediated import into the inner membrane in both the presence and absence of Ī“Ļˆ. The results suggest two conclusions: (1) Ī“Ļˆ-dependent import of the signal-anchor sequence was due exclusively to an effect of Ī“Ļˆ on the positively-charged domain of the signal-anchor, rather than to an effect of Ī“Ļˆ on a property of the inner membrane import machinery; (2) in the absence of Ī“Ļˆ, the positively-charged domain of the signal-anchor prevented the otherwise import-competent signal-anchor from inserting into the membrane. This suggests that the positively-charged domain leads import across the inner membrane, and that dqi is required to vectorially clear this domain in order to allow the distal region of the signal-anchor to enter the translocation pathway. The implications of these findings on the mechanism of import into the mitochondrial inner membrane and matrix are discussed

Coagulation and fragmentation processes with evolving size and shape profiles : a semigroup approach

    Get PDF
We investigate a class of bivariate coagulation-fragmentation equations. These equations describe the evolution of a system of particles that are characterised not only by a discrete size variable but also by a shape variable which can be either discrete or continuous. Existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the associated abstract Cauchy problems are established by using the theory of substochastic semigroups of operators
