p-brane superalgebras via integrability
It has long been appreciated that superalgebras with bosonic and fermionic
generators additional to those in the super-Poincare algebra underlie p-brane
and D-brane actions in superstring theory. These algebras have been revealed
via "bottom up" approaches, involving consideration of Noether charges, and by
"top down" approaches, involving the construction of manifestly supersymmetry
invariant Wess-Zumino actions. In this paper, we give an alternative derivation
of these algebras based on integrability of supersymmetry transformations
assigned to fields in order to solve a cohomology problem related to the

Deriving all p-brane superalgebras via integrability
In previous work we demonstrated that the enlarged super-Poincare algebras
which underlie p-brane and D-brane actions in superstring theory can be
directly determined based on the integrability of supersymmetry transformations
assigned to fields appearing in Wess-Zumino terms. In that work we derived
p-brane superalgebras for p = 2 and 3. Here we extend our previous results and

The Hot R Coronae Borealis Star DY Centauri is a Binary
The remarkable hot R Coronae Borealis (RCB) star DY Cen is revealed to be the first and only binary system to be found among the RCB stars and their likely relatives, including the extreme helium stars and the hydrogen-deficient carbon stars. Radial velocity determinations from 1982 to 2010 have shown that DY Cen is a single-lined spectroscopic binary in an eccentric orbit with a period of 39.67 days. It is also one of the hottest and most H-rich member of the class of RCB stars. A New Calibration Of Galactic Cepheid Period-Luminosity Relations From B To K Bands, And A Comparison To LMC Relations
Context. The universality of the Cepheid period-luminosity (PL) relations has been under discussion since metallicity effects were assumed to play a role in the value of the intercept and, more recently, of the slope of these relations. Aims. The goal of the present study is to calibrate the Galactic PL relations in various photometric bands (from B to K) and to compare the results to the well-established PL relations in the LMC. Methods. We use a set of 59 calibrating stars, the distances of which are measured using five different distance indicators: Hubble Space Telescope and revised Hipparcos parallaxes, infrared surface brightness and interferometric Baade-Wesselink parallaxes, and classical Zero-Age-Main-Sequence-fitting parallaxes for Cepheids belonging to open clusters or OB stars associations. A detailed discussion of absorption corrections and projection factor to be used is given. Results. We find no significant difference in the slopes of the PL relations between LMC and our Galaxy. Conclusions. We conclude that the Cepheid PL relations have universal slopes in all photometric bands, not depending on the galaxy under study (at least for LMC and Milky Way). The possible zero-point variation with metal content is not discussed in the present work, but an upper limit of 18.50 for the LMC distance modulus can be deduced from our data.McDonald Observator
Personalisation and recommender systems in digital libraries
Widespread use of the Internet has resulted in digital libraries that are increasingly used by diverse communities of users for diverse purposes and in which sharing and collaboration have become important social elements. As such libraries become commonplace, as their contents and services become more varied, and as their patrons become more experienced with computer technology, users will expect more sophisticated services from these libraries. A simple search function, normally an integral part of any digital library, increasingly leads to user frustration as user needs become more complex and as the volume of managed information increases. Proactive digital libraries, where the library evolves from being passive and untailored, are seen as offering great potential for addressing and overcoming these issues and include techniques such as personalisation and recommender systems. In this paper, following on from the DELOS/NSF Working Group on Personalisation and Recommender Systems for Digital Libraries, which met and reported during 2003, we present some background material on the scope of personalisation and recommender systems in digital libraries. We then outline the working group’s vision for the evolution of digital libraries and the role that personalisation and recommender systems will play, and we present a series of research challenges and specific recommendations and research priorities for the field
Effective Average Action in N=1 Super-Yang-Mills Theory
For N=1 Super-Yang-Mills theory we generalize the effective average action
Gamma_k in a manifest supersymmetric way using the superspace formalism. The
exact evolution equation for Gamma_k is derived and, introducing as an
application a simple truncation, the standard one-loop beta-function of N=1 SYM

Darboux Transformations for Supersymmetric Korteweg - de Vries Equations

Wess-Zumino Terms in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories
The Wess-Zumino term is constructed for supersymmetric QCD with two colors
and flavors, and is shown to correctly reproduce the anomalous Ward identities.
Supersymmetric QCD is also shown not to have topologically stable skyrmion
solutions because of baryon flat directions, which allow them to unwind. The
generalization of these results to other supersymmetric theories with quantum

Synthetic RNA Silencing of Actinorhodin Biosynthesis in Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2)
We demonstrate the first application of synthetic RNA gene silencers in Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2). Peptide nucleic acid and expressed antisense RNA silencers successfully inhibited actinorhodin production. Synthetic RNA silencing was target-specific and is a new tool for gene regulation and metabolic engineering studies in Streptomyces.Peer reviewe
