    Enhancing territorial capital for developing mountain areas: the example of Trentino and its use of medicinal and aromatic plants

    Today mountain areas are facing major economic challenges, due to depopulation, a lack of competitiveness and the impact of climate change. To combat this trend, it has been surmised that an integrated development approach based on innovation, cooperation between the public and private sectors and enhancement of the local cultural heritage could create new opportunities. The authors will report on SY_CULTour pilot project initiatives promoted by the Autonomous Province of Trento in cooperation with the Trentino Ecomuseums Network to promote the exploitation of medicinal and aromatic plants, using an integrated approach. A description of the starting up of the pilot project and interviews with those cultivating medicinal plants will be used to highlight innovative processes underway in the ecomuseum areas, in an attempt to show how the cultural heritage, landscape and environment could be integrated to encourage the economic development of mountain communities, as a strategic factor in sustainable development

    The distribution of robotic surgery in general and visceral surgery departments in Switzerland - a nationwide inquiry.

    OBJECTIVES Since its introduction as a clinical technique, robotic surgery has been extended to different fields of surgery. However, the indications as well as the number of robotic procedures varied in different institutions. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the current use of robotic surgery in general and digestive surgery in Switzerland. METHODS All Swiss surgical departments that are recognized training institutes for postgraduate training in surgery by the Swiss Institute of Medical Education (SIWF) were queried with a detailed questionnaire regarding the use of robotic surgery techniques and were analyzed regarding hospital size and type of hospital. RESULTS Ninety-three departments were queried, and 67 % (n=63) answered the survey. Fifty-eight were public, and five were private institutions. Seventeen (26 %) of the queried departments used robotic surgery in digestive surgery. Four out of 17 (23 %) of the departments that performed robotic surgery were private hospitals, while 13 (77 %) were public institutions. In the majority of departments, robotic surgery of the rectum (n=12; 70.6 %) and colon (n=11; 64.7 %) was performed, followed by hernia procedures (n=8; 47.1 %) and fundoplication (n=7; 41.2 %). Less frequently, pancreatic resections (n=5; 29.4 %), cholecystectomy (n=4; 23.5 %), adrenalectomy (n=4; 23.5 %), gastric bypass (n=3; 17.7 %), gastric sleeve (n=3; 17.7 %), hepatic procedures (n=2; 11.7 %), or small bowel resections (n=1; 5.9 %) were performed as robotic procedures. More than 25 procedures per year per department were performed for hernia surgery (n=5 departments), gastric bypass (n=2 departments), cholecystectomy, fundoplication, and colon surgery (each n=1 department). CONCLUSIONS The number and range of robotic procedures performed in Switzerland varied widely. Higher accreditation for general surgery or subspecialization of visceral surgery of the department was positively associated with the use of robotic techniques, reflecting an unequal availability of robotic surgery

    Left ventricular postoperative false aneurysm following apical venting

    We report a case of false aneurysm of the left ventricle occurring subsequently to the placing of a vent sump line through the apex during an aortic valve procedure; the diagnosis was made twelve months later during a routine echocardiographic examination. The lesion was successfully repaired. This case recommend the use of other routes of venting in order to reduce the incidence of such complications

EP/L015110/1.To advance fundamental understanding and ultimate application of transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers, it is essential to develop capabilities for the synthesis of high-quality single-layer samples. Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), a leading technique for the fabrication of the highest-quality epitaxial films of conventional semiconductors has, however, typically yielded only small grain sizes and suboptimal morphologies when applied to the van der Waals growth of monolayer TMDs. Here, we present a systematic study on the influence of adatom mobility, growth rate, and metal:chalcogen flux on the growth of NbSe2, VSe2, and TiSe2 using MBE. Through this, we identify the key drivers and influence of the adatom kinetics that control the epitaxial growth of TMDs, realizing four distinct morphologies of the as-grown compounds. We use this to determine optimized growth conditions for the fabrication of high-quality monolayers, ultimately realizing the largest grain sizes of monolayer TMDs that have been achieved to date via MBE growth.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Strain-induced enhancement of the charge-density-wave in the kagome metal ScV6_6Sn6_6

    The kagome geometry is an example of frustrated configuration in which rich physics takes place, including the emergence of superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW). Among the kagome metals, ScV6_6Sn6_6 hosts an unconventional CDW, with its electronic order showing a different periodicity than that of the phonon which generates it. In this material, a CDW-softened flat phonon band has a second-order collapse at the same time that the first order transition occurs. This phonon band originates from the out-of-plane vibrations of the Sc and Sn atoms, and it is at the base of the electron-phonon-coupling driven CDW phase of ScV6_6Sn6_6. Here, we use uniaxial strain to tune the frequency of the flat phonon band, tracking the strain evolution via time-resolved optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. Our findings emphasize the capability to induce an enhancement of the unconventional CDW properties in ScV6_6Sn6_6 kagome metal through control of strain.Comment: Main text + S
