Unexpected coexisting solid solutions in the quasi-binary Ag(II)F2/Cu(II)F2 phase diagram
High-temperature solid-state reaction between orthorhombic AgF2 and
monoclinic CuF2 (y = 0.15, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) in a fluorine atmosphere resulted in
coexisting solid solutions of Cu-poor orthorhombic and Cu-rich monoclinic
phases with stoichiometry Ag1-xCuxF2. Based on X-ray powder diffraction
analyses, the mutual solubility in the orthorhombic phase (AgF2 doped with Cu)
appears to be at an upper limit of Cu concentration of 30 mol % (Ag0.7Cu0.3F2),
while the monoclinic phase (CuF2 doped with Ag) can form a nearly
stoichiometric Cu : Ag = 1 : 1 solid solution (Cu0.56Ag0.44F2), preserving the
CuF2 crystal structure. Experimental data and DFT calculations showed that AgF2
doped with Cu and CuF2 doped with Ag solid solutions deviate from the classical
Vegards law. Magnetic measurements of Ag1-xCuxF2 showed that the Neel
temperature (TN) decreases with increasing Cu content in both phases. Likewise,
theoretical DFT+U calculations for Ag1-xCuxF2 showed that the progressive
substitution of Ag by Cu decreases the magnetic interaction strength (J2D) in
both structures. Electrical conductivity measurements of Ag0.85Cu0.15F2 showed
a ca. 2-fold increase in specific ionic conductivity (3.71 x 10-13 plus/minus
2.6 x 10-15 S/cm) as compared to pure AgF2 (1.85 x 10-13 plus/minus 1.2 x 10-15
S/cm), indicating the formation of a vacancy- or F adatom-free metal difluoride

Nutrient intake during pregnancy and adherence to dietary recommendations: The mediterranean phime cohort
Few studies provide a detailed description of dietary habits during pregnancy, despite the central role of nutrition for the health of the mother and offspring. This paper describes the dietary habits, energy and nutrient intake in pregnant women from four countries belonging to the Mediterranean PHIME cohort (Croatia, Greece, Italy and Slovenia) and evaluates their adherence to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommendations. A total of 1436 women were included in the present analysis. Maternal diet was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The mean macro and micronutrient intakes were estimated and compared with the dietary reference values (DRVs). The percentage distribution of the 16 food groups in the total intake of each macronutrient was estimated. All women shared a similar diet during pregnancy; almost all the women in the four countries exceeded the DRV for sugars, and the total fat intake was above the DRV in most women in all the countries, as was the contribution of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) to the total energy intake. In all four countries, we observed an increased risk of micronutrient deficiency for iron, folate and vitamin D. Shared guidelines, implemented at both the national and European level, are essential to improve the maternal nutritional status during pregnancy

Harmonized human biomonitoring in European children, teenagers and adults: EU-wide exposure data of 11 chemical substance groups from the HBM4EU Aligned Studies (2014–2021)
As one of the core elements of the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) a human biomonitoring (HBM) survey was conducted in 23 countries to generate EU-wide comparable HBM data. This survey has built on existing HBM capacity in Europe by aligning national or regional HBM studies, referred to as the HBM4EU Aligned Studies. The HBM4EU Aligned Studies included a total of 10,795 participants of three age groups: (i) 3,576 children aged 6–12 years, (ii) 3,117 teenagers aged 12–18 years and (iii) 4,102 young adults aged 20–39 years. The participants were recruited between 2014 and 2021 in 11–12 countries per age group, geographically distributed across Europe. Depending on the age group, internal exposure to phthalates and the substitute DINCH, halogenated and organophosphorus flame retardants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), cadmium, bisphenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), arsenic species, acrylamide, mycotoxins (deoxynivalenol (total DON)), benzophenones and selected pesticides was assessed by measuring substance specific biomarkers subjected to stringent quality control programs for chemical analysis. For substance groups analyzed in different age groups higher average exposure levels were observed in the youngest age group, i.e., phthalates/DINCH in children versus teenagers, acrylamide and pesticides in children versus adults, benzophenones in teenagers versus adults. Many biomarkers in teenagers and adults varied significantly according to educational attainment, with higher exposure levels of bisphenols, phthalates, benzophenones, PAHs and acrylamide in participants (from households) with lower educational attainment, while teenagers from households with higher educational attainment have higher exposure levels for PFASs and arsenic. In children, a social gradient was only observed for the non-specific pyrethroid metabolite 3-PBA and di-isodecyl phthalate (DiDP), with higher levels in children from households with higher educational attainment. Geographical variations were seen for all exposure biomarkers. For 15 biomarkers, the available health-based HBM guidance values were exceeded with highest exceedance rates for toxicologically relevant arsenic in teenagers (40%), 3-PBA in children (36%), and between 11 and 14% for total DON, Σ (PFOA + PFNA + PFHxS + PFOS), bisphenol S and cadmium. The infrastructure and harmonized approach succeeded in obtaining comparable European wide internal exposure data for a prioritized set of 11 chemical groups. These data serve as a reference for comparison at the global level, provide a baseline to compare the efficacy of the European Commission's chemical strategy for sustainability and will give leverage to national policy makers for the implementation of targeted measures

On the covalency of silver-fluorine bonds in compounds of Silver(I), Silver(II) and Silver(III)
Unconventional covalence: For the higher silver fluorides the silver-fluorine chemical bonding is significantly covalent, in contrast to the conventional "ionic" picture most frequently used in the chemistry of inorganic fluorides. For KAgF4, an Ag(III) fluoride, the Ag(4d) states (see picture) are more within the "ligand band" (60%) than within the "metal band" (40%) reflecting significant covalency of the Ag-F bond, and an electronic band with significant hole production within the anionic F(2p) states
