This paper presents a study on the respiratory metabolism of germinating seeds of Inga sessilis subjected to normoxia, hypoxia and anoxia. Although it is typical of environments where waterlogging seldom occurs, 40% of its seeds are able to germinate under hypoxia; yet, anoxia periods over 96 h are lethal to the seeds. Ethanol is the main product of the seeds anaerobic metabolism, but the steep increase in lactate after 24 h anoxia or 48 h hypoxia may explain the drop in seed viability.

    Pediatric eosinophilic gastroenteritis

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders are chronic inflammatory diseases in which eosinophils highly infiltrate into gastrointestinal tissue, resulting in gastrointestinal dysfunction. Here, we report a case of pediatric eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE). A 7-year-old boy with multiple food allergies (cow milk, hen's egg, fish, shellfish, and chicken) was admitted to our hospital because of continuous abdominal pain and vomiting. His soy allergy had been diagnosed to have oral tolerance based on an oral food challenge at the age of 6 years. He was diagnosed with EGE based on biopsy findings showing eosinophilic infiltration (>20 eosinophils per high-power field) into the gastrointestinal mucosa. A diet eliminating soy, wheat, beef, pork, rice, and sesame in addition to the food that had already been eliminated and oral corticosteroids improved his symptoms and peripheral eosinophilia. A relapse of both abdominal pain and peripheral eosinophilia after the reintroduction of soy or pork identified them as foods causative of EGE. This report highlights the utility of elimination diets in improving EGE symptoms and the subsequent reintroduction of offending foods in identifying causative foods. Furthermore, EGE onset should be considered when introducing potentially allergic food in the management of food allergy

Migration, early axonogenesis, and Reelin-dependent layer-forming behavior of early/posterior-born Purkinje cells in the developing mouse lateral cerebellum

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cerebellar corticogenesis begins with the assembly of Purkinje cells into the Purkinje plate (PP) by embryonic day 14.5 (E14.5) in mice. Although the dependence of PP formation on the secreted protein Reelin is well known and a prevailing model suggests that Purkinje cells migrate along the 'radial glial' fibers connecting the ventricular and pial surfaces, it is not clear how Purkinje cells behave in response to Reelin to initiate the PP. Furthermore, it is not known what nascent Purkinje cells look like <it>in vivo</it>. When and how Purkinje cells start axonogenesis must also be elucidated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We show that Purkinje cells generated on E10.5 in the posterior periventricular region of the lateral cerebellum migrate tangentially, after only transiently migrating radially, towards the anterior, exhibiting an elongated morphology consistent with axonogenesis at E12.5. After their somata reach the outer/dorsal region by E13.5, they change 'posture' by E14.5 through remodeling of non-axon (dendrite-like) processes and a switchback-like mode of somal movement towards a superficial Reelin-rich zone, while their axon-like fibers remain relatively deep, which demarcates the somata-packed portion as a plate. In <it>reeler </it>cerebella, the early born posterior lateral Purkinje cells are initially normal during migration with anteriorly extended axon-like fibers until E13.5, but then fail to form the PP due to lack of the posture-change step.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Previously unknown behaviors are revealed for a subset of Purkinje cells born early in the posteior lateral cerebellum: tangential migration; early axonogenesis; and Reelin-dependent reorientation initiating PP formation. This study provides a solid basis for further elucidation of Reelin's function and the mechanisms underlying the cerebellar corticogenesis, and will contribute to the understanding of how polarization of individual cells drives overall brain morphogenesis.</p

How a disabled person's family recovered resilience through intervention by a daughter-in-law who became a companion for the disabled person <Article>

The purpose of this research was to study the family resilience recovery processes by which a woman who became the sister of a disabled person through marriage was able to improve the family's situation. The subject of the research was a 44 year-old female. She married her husband 25 years ago. Her husband's younger sister was disabled. In this research a single case study was done, through a semi-structured interview. The subject said that she had intervened on a problem of cruelty that the disabled person's family face. The family had been insular, but the subject led it to become one open to society. Furthermore, the disabled person was able to maintain a place in society, which also contributed to the recovery of her physical and emotional functions. In this way, the subject took on the role of recovering the family's resilience. However, this worsened the relation between her mother-in-law and the disabled person. This suggests that the subject's bearing everything on her shoulders was a major burden for her. In the future it is necessary to investigate the subject's life history and the husband's family and increase the number of case studies

DIMERIC MOLECULAR AGGREGATION MOTIF IN CRYSTAL OF 2,7-DIETHOXY-1-(4-NITROBENZOYL)NAPHTHALENE: CORRELATION OF SINGLE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE, MOLECULAR ACCUMULATION STRUCTURE AND NON-COVALENT-BONDING INTERACTIONS

Crystal structure of 2,7-diethoxy-1-(4-nitrobenzoyl)naphthalene, C21H19NO5, is reported and discussed on the characteristics of the spatial organization of single molecule and molecular aggregation as contrasted with a homologous compound. The molecular structures of these compounds differ only in the kind of alkoxy group of 2,7-positions of naphthalene rings, i.e., ethoxy groups for title compound and methoxy ones for homologue. In single molecular crystal structure, the 4-nitrobenzoyl groups of these molecules are attached non-coplanarly to the naphthalene ring. The congested situation makes bonds connecting naphthalene ring and carbonyl group fixed to turn stereogenetic, which allow the independent existence of atrope stereoisomers of (R)- and (S)-enantiomeric conformer molecules, contrary to their solute state where the fast interconversion disturbs the distinction of the enantiomeric molecules. The two pairs of the enantiomeric molecules are related by two-fold helical axis in the asymmetric unit of P21/n space group for title compound and P21/c for homologous compound, exhibiting the number of molecules (Z) is four for both compounds. In crystal of title compound, (R)- and (S)-enantiomers are connected to each other by pi…pi stacking interaction and two types of C–H…O=N non-classical hydrogen bonds, (sp2)C–H…O=N and (sp3)C–H…O=N non-classical hydrogen bonds along b-axis, forming centrosymmetric dimeric molecular aggregates. The dimeric units are stacked into columnar structure by (sp2)C–H…O=C non-classical hydrogen bonds between molecular unit of identical enantiomeric configuration along a-axis. The columns are also connected by (sp2)C–H…OEt non-classical hydrogen bonds between molecular unit of identical enantiomeric configuration along c-axis to give sheet-like aggregate composed of molecules of same enantiomeric configuration spreading on ac-plane. The sheets are piled up through (sp3)C–H…pi non-classical hydrogen bonds between opposite enantiomeric molecular units of next dimeric aggregates along b-axis. In crystal of the homologous compound, 2,7-dimethoxy-1-(4-nitrobenzoyl)naphthalene, centrosymmetric dimeric aggregate resulted from the association of (R)- and (S)-enantiomers via pi…pi stacking interactions are also observed. The centrosymmetric dimeric aggregates are unidirectionally lined by two kinds of non-classical hydrogen bonds between molecular unit of identical enantiomeric configuration, (sp3)C–H…O=C and (sp3)C–H…pi non-classical hydrogen bonds, giving columnar structure. The columns are accumulated giving a wavy sheet structure composed of stripes of respective enantiomeric configuration oriented alternatively and anti-parallelly through weak (sp2)C–H…pi non-classical hydrogen bonds. The difference of higher ordered structure between title compound and homologue is plausibly explained according to one CH2 margin in 2,7-dialkoxy groups, i.e., elongation of the least length in alkyl group of title compound compared to homologue brings about the sterically significant hindrance among dimeric aggregates that makes rather anisotropic intermolecular non-covalent bonding interactions resulting in accumulating sheet structure. For 1-monoaroylnaphthalene compounds, the most stabilized single molecular structure on condition that the sufficiently effective intermolecular interaction is absent is proposed the perpendicular alignment of naphthalene and benzene rings to prevent the steric repulsion of two aromatic rings. The smaller spatial volume of methyl group in homologue molecule is plausibly able to be merged without large alternation in the single molecular structure most stabilized. Contrarily, the additional methylene unit at 2,7-alkoxy group probably requires the rather large perturbation from the supposed structure most stabilized
