Ultrasonographic imaging of canine mammary tumours
The efficiency and reliability of an ultrasonographic technique for evaluating mammary neoplasms was tested in 19 female dogs with palpable tumours. A 7·5 MHz linear-array ultrasound transducer was used, with an aqueous stand-off pad between the probe and the skin. The ultrasonographic images were used to evaluate the shape, size and echogenicity of the mammary lesions, and their relationship with other tissues. The tumours were excised and analysed histologically. A comparison of the ultrasonographic and histological findings revealed that the ultrasonographic images of nine of the 11 malignant tumours had irregular margins and were polymorphous in shape, all 11 were heterogeneous in their internal echogenicity, seven had acoustic shadowing and three showed acoustic enhancement. In contrast, seven of the eight benign tumours had regular margins and were spherical or oval in shape, all eight were homogeneous in their internal echographic pattern, seven had edge shadowing, and all eight showed acoustic enhancement. Moreover, six of the 11 malignant neoplasia were invasive, whereas all the benign tumours were isolated

REPRODUCTIVE CYCLE STAGE ASSESSMENT IN THE TWO-TOED SLOTH (CHOLOEPUS HOFFMANNI), PRELIMINARY RESULTS
6 Pág.The number of two-toed sloths (Choloepus hoffmanni) has significantly decreased in the last years. Deepening the knowledge of this tropical mammal's reproductive physiology is essential to improve captive breeding within conservation programs for this species. However, several aspects of its reproductive biology remain unexplored and have not been described sufficiently. The aim of this work was to describe the estrous cycle and reproductive physiology of two adult female C. hoffmanni by vaginal cytology, appearance of the external genitalia, and behavior. Vaginal cytology assay showed that the average duration of the estrous cycle was 15.1 ± 4.53 d. Positive correlations (P < 0.05) were found between the peak presence of superficial cells (estrous phase) and four parameters: aggressive behavior, pursuing behavior, vulvar swelling, and vaginal discharge. This pilot study, conducted on just two animals, forms a basis for a study design that may be employed for a more comprehensive assessment of the two-toed sloth reproductive physiology and behavior. The authors thank the staff and volunteers of the Jaguar Rescue Center for their cooperation, expertise, and valuable help throughout this study.Peer reviewe
