Causal Induction from Continuous Event Streams: Evidence for Delay-Induced Attribution Shifts
Contemporary theories of Human Causal Induction assume that causal knowledge is inferred from observable contingencies. While this assumption is well supported by empirical results, it fails to consider an important problem-solving aspect of causal induction in real time: In the absence of well structured learning trials, it is not clear whether the effect of interest occurred because of the cause under investigation, or on its own accord. Attributing the effect to either the cause of interest or alternative background causes is an important precursor to induction. We present a new paradigm based on the presentation of continuous event streams, and use it to test the Attribution-Shift Hypothesis (Shanks & Dickinson, 1987), according to which temporal delays sever the attributional link between cause and effect. Delays generally impaired attribution to the candidate, and increased attribution to the constant background of alternative causes. In line with earlier research (Buehner & May, 2002, 2003, 2004) prior knowledge and experience mediated this effect. Pre-exposure to a causally ineffective background context was found to facilitate the discovery of delayed causal relationships by reducing the tendency for attributional shifts to occur. However, longer exposure to a delayed causal relationship did not improve discovery. Using film cutting in interface design
It has been suggested that computer interfaces could be made more usable if their designers utilized cinematography techniques, which have evolved to guide
the viewer through a narrative despite frequent discontinuities in the presented scene (i.e., cuts between shots). Because of differences between the domains of
film and interface design, it is not straightforward to understand how such techniques can be transferred. May and Barnard (1995) argued that a psychological
model of watching film could support such a transference. This article presents an extended account of this model, which allows identification of the practice of collocation
of objects of interest in the same screen position before and after a cut. To verify that filmmakers do, in fact, use such techniques successfully, eye movements

Collocating Interface Objects: Zooming into Maps
May, Dean and Barnard [10] used a theoretically based model to argue that objects in a wide range of interfaces should be collocated following screen changes such as a zoom-in to detail. Many existing online maps do not follow this principle, but move a clicked point to the centre of the subsequent display, leaving the user looking at an unrelated location. This paper presents three experiments showing that collocating the point clicked on a map so that the detailed location appears in the place previously occupied by the overview location makes the map easier to use, reducing eye movements and interaction duration. We discuss the benefit of basing design principles on theoretical models so that they can be applied to novel situations, and so designers can infer when to use and not use them
Emotional and behavioral reaction to intrusive thoughts.
A self-report measure of the emotional and behavioral reactions to intrusive thoughts was developed. The article presents data that confirm the stability, reliability, and validity of the new seven-item measure. Emotional and behavioral reactions to intrusions emerged as separate factors on the Emotional and Behavioral Reactions to Intrusions Questionnaire (EBRIQ), a finding confirmed by an independent stress study. Test-retest reliability over 30 to 70 days was good. Expected relationships with other constructs were significant. Stronger negative responses to intrusions were associated with lower mindfulness scores and higher ratings of experiential avoidance, thought suppression, and intensity and frequency of craving. The EBRIQ will help explore differences in reactions to intrusive thoughts in clinical and nonclinical populations, and across different emotional and behavioral states. It will also be useful in assessing the effects of therapeutic approaches such as mindfulness
Equivariant infinite loop space theory, I. The space level story
We rework and generalize equivariant infinite loop space theory, which shows
how to construct G-spectra from G-spaces with suitable structure. There is a
naive version which gives naive G-spectra for any topological group G, but our
focus is on the construction of genuine G-spectra when G is finite.
We give new information about the Segal and operadic equivariant infinite
loop space machines, supplying many details that are missing from the
literature, and we prove by direct comparison that the two machines give
equivalent output when fed equivalent input. The proof of the corresponding
nonequivariant uniqueness theorem, due to May and Thomason, works for naive
G-spectra for general G but fails hopelessly for genuine G-spectra when G is
finite. Even in the nonequivariant case, our comparison theorem is considerably
more precise, giving a direct point-set level comparison.
We have taken the opportunity to update this general area, equivariant and
nonequivariant, giving many new proofs, filling in some gaps, and giving some
corrections to results in the literature.Comment: 94 page
Heteroclinic Chaos, Chaotic Itinerancy and Neutral Attractors in Symmetrical Replicator Equations with Mutations
A replicator equation with mutation processes is numerically studied.
Without any mutations, two characteristics of the replicator dynamics are
known: an exponential divergence of the dominance period, and hierarchical
orderings of the attractors. A mutation introduces some new aspects: the
emergence of structurally stable attractors, and chaotic itinerant behavior. In
addition, it is reported that a neutral attractor can exist in the mutataion

Opportunities for weed manipulation using GMHT row crops
The herbicides and cultivation systems available in most non-GM crops allow farmers little flexibility as to when they control weeds. However, glyphosate and glufosinate-ammonium, as used in GM herbicide tolerant crops, offer the opportunity to control large weeds and weed control can be timed according to the agronomic and environmental aims of the user. Secondary literacy across the curriculum: Challenges and possibilities
This paper discusses the challenges and possibilities attendant upon successfully implementing literacy across the curriculum initiatives – or ‘school language policies’ as they have come to be known - particularly at the secondary or high school level. It provides a theoretical background to these issues, exploring previous academic discussions of school language policies, and highlights key areas of concern as well as opportunity with respect to school implementation of such policies. As such, it provides a necessary conceptual background to the subsequent papers in this special issue, which focus upon the Secondary Schools’ Literacy Initiative (SSLI) – a New Zealand funded programme that aims to establish cross-curricular language and literacy policies in secondary schools
