Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) aided cooling of strontium atoms

The presence of ultra-narrow inter-combination spectroscopic lines in alkaline earth elements places them as promising candidates for optical atomic clocks, quantum computation, and for probing fundmental physics. Doppler cooling of these atoms is typically achieved through two subsequent stages: the initial cooling is on the 1s0-1p1 transition followed by cooling using the narrow-line 1s0-3p1 transition. However, due to significantly lower linewidth of the second stage cooling transition, efficient transfer of atoms into the second stage becomes technically challenging. The velocity distribution of the atoms after the first stage of cooling is too broad for atoms to be captured efficiently in the second stage cooling. As a result, the capture efficiency of atoms into the second stage Magneto-Optical Trap is low, even if the linewidth of the second stage cooling laser is artificially broadened.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

Diagnostic utility of cytospin, cell block and immunocytochemistry in pleural effusion cytology

Background: With the introduction of cytospin, the sensitivity of diagnosing malignancies has increased mainly due to the increase in cellular yield. Cell block also gives the advantage of ancillary testing and allows for retrospective studies. Immunocytochemical markers are used to differentiate and subtype various malignancies in body effusions.Aim of the study was to compare the morphological features of both technique and to assess the diagnostic utility of cell block methods in the cytodiagnosis of pleural effusions. Methods: This was a Prospective observational comparative study of two cytopreparatory techniques. All samples were examined and processed by cytospin and cell block techniques. Continuous data were expressed as Mean±SD (standard deviation) while categorical data were expressed in number, percentage and compared by chi-square (χ2) test. Results: The final diagnosis of both cytospin (147 cases) and cell block (150 cases) techniques was divided into four broad categories: Inadequate, Benign, Suspicious and Malignant. The significant diagnostic cytospin (AUC=0.857, p<0.001) in discriminating positive and negative malignant cases with 75.00% sensitivity (95% CI=53.3-90.2) and 100.00% specificity (95% CI=86.7-100.0) and with 100.0% positive predictive value and 81.2% negative predictive value. In contrast, cell block also showed significant diagnostic but with higher accuracy (AUC=1.000, p<0.001) and sensitivity 100.00% (95% CI=86.7-100.0) and specificity 100.00% (95% CI=86.7-100.0) and 100.0% positive predictive value and 100.0% negative predictive value than cytospin technique. Conclusions: Cell block as a technique should be used in routine practice as it not only increases the diagnostic yield but ancillary test can also be done

Comparative analysis of phase noise for different configurations of Bragg lattice for an atomic gravimeter with Bose–Einstein condensate

We perform a comparative study of the phase noise induced in the lasers used for Bragg diffraction in a Bose–Einstein condensate-based quantum gravimeter where the Bragg beams are generated using two different configurations. In one of the configurations, the Bragg beams that form the moving optical lattice are generated using two different acousto-optic modulators. In the second configuration, the Bragg beams are generated using a single acousto-optic modulator carrying two phase-locked frequencies. The second configuration shows a suppression of the phase noise by a factor of 4.7 times in the frequency band up to 10 kHz, the primary source of noise, which is the background acoustic noise picked up by optical components and the optical table. We report a short-term sensitivity of 1360μGal/Hz and upon integration over 200 s, achieve a resolution of 99.7 μGal for an interferometric duration of 10 ms

Effects of finite momentum width on the reversal dynamics in a BEC based atom optics δ-kicked rotor

International audienceThis experimental work demonstrates the importance of finite-width effects in the evolution of a quantum system, where the results deviate considerably from the plane wave approximation even for an initial state with a very narrow momentum width i.e a Bose-Einstein condensate. The system under consideration is an atom optics δ-kicked rotor for which a fidelity based measurement has been proposed to possess a rapid scaling of sensitivity (N-3) with pulse number N. Although attractive, we demonstrate that this scaling does not hold in the regime where the momentum selectivity of the pulse sequence becomes significantly smaller than the momentum width of the initial state. Additionally, the momentum distribution post kicking shows a lattice-phase dependent intra-order and inter-order asymmetry in the diffracted orders. The intra-order asymmetry, in which no net momentum current is present, is a previously unreported type of effect. For a two pulse case, the inter-order asymmetry signal is found to be about five times more sensitive to the resonance than the initial state fidelity. Both of these asymmetries provide a zero-crossing signal which can be used to diagnose any undesirable lattice phase offset at resonant and off-resonant pulse periods
