Women in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games: An Analysis of Participation, Leadership, and Media Opportunities

    Get PDF
This report is the third in the series that follows the progress of women in the Olympic and Paralympic movement. The report provides the most accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date examination of the participation trends among female Olympic and Paralympic athletes and the hiring trends of Olympic and Paralympic governing bodies with respect to the number of women who hold leadership positions in these organizations. The report also looks at newspaper and internet coverage of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

Women in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games

This report analyzes the representation and participation of women in the international and U.S. Olympic organizations relative to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, especially for 2000, 2004, and 2008. In addition it examines the types and extent of opportunities that are provided for women in administrative and leadership roles within these structures and the chances women have to compete in the Games themselves. This report also assesses the extent that the IOC, IPC and USOC are fulfilling their stated missions with respect to fairness and gender equity and whether or not legal statutes are being upheld. Finally, there is analysis of media coverage of female athletes in the 2008 Olympic Games

Molecular Cloning and Characterization of the Rhodobacter capsulatushemA Gene.

The first step in the common tetrapyrrole pathway in Rhodobacter capsulatus is the condensation of glycine with succinyl CoA to form 5-aminolevulinate which is then used in the synthesis of bacteriochlorophyll, heme, vitamin B-12, and siroheme. To isolate mutants unable to form 5-aminolevulinate, as a first step in studying regulation of the tetrapyrrole pathway, R. capsulatus was mated with E. coli carrying plasmid pSUP2021. pSUP2021 carries transposon Tn5 and is incapable of replicating in R. capsulatus making it an ideal vector for transposon mutagenesis. One colony was found which requires 5-aminolevulinate for growth. This mutant strain, designated AJB529, has a growth rate and bacteriochlorophyll production at a level comparable to those of the parental strain when provided with 5-aminolevulinate. A cosmid library of R. capsulatus DNA was mated into AJB529 via the tetracycline resistant vector pLAFRI. Tetracycline resistant colonies which no longer required 5-aminolevulinate for growth were selected. Cosmids were isolated from these colonies and one was designated pCAP17. pCAP17 was transformed into E. coli and mated back to R. capsulatus to confirm 5-aminolevulinate independence. pCAP17 was digested to completion with EcoRI and was found to contain five insert fragments. Through a series of partial digestions S. Biel found that the 0.6 kb and 1.4 kb insert fragments are both required to confer 5-aminolevulinate independence. Through Southern blot analysis the 1.4 kb fragment was found to span the hemA::tn5 insertion. A translational fusion was made between the hemA and lacZ genes. The hemA-lacZ fusion plasmid was mated into R. capsulatus strain PAS100. The size of the fusion protein was determined to be 147,000 by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Cell-free extracts were assayed for β\beta-galactosidase activity after growth under high and low oxygen tensions. Transcription of the hemA gene, measured as β\beta-galactosidase activity, was two-fold higher under low oxygen tension

A study to compare the effectiveness of a response cost approach and a traditional approach to behavior modification with an ADD child

The purpose of this case study was to compare the effectiveness of a response cost approach and a traditional approach to behavior modification. The subject is a seven year old boy diagnosed with characteristics of ADD. Baseline data was collected for five consecutive school days Three behaviors were targeted. Intervention consisted of six weeks of traditional behavior modification involving an individual sticker chart when filled earning computer time followed by six weeks of response cost involving the removal of chips for negative behaviors. Remaining chips could be exchanged far computer time at the end of each day. The results of this study indicate consistent behavior modification approaches are effective in reducing negative classroom behaviors. The response cost approach appears to be slightly more effective than traditional approaches on this subject

    Called to Respond

The Canadian Jesuit Refugee Programme hosted the conference "Called to Respond: Refugees and the New Canadian Reality" on October 28-30. The objective was to develop a working strategy on options to continue supporting refugees. Given the ambiguity of how the new legislation will be manifest in practice, our "new reality" is currently largely unknown quantity. Clearly, in these circumstances, the process of developing a strategy is dynamic in nature since strategizing must anticipate the need to respond to reality as it unfolds

Evaluation of prototype air/fluid separator for Space Station Freedom Health Maintenance Facility

A prototype air/fluid separator suction apparatus proposed as a possible design for use with the Health Maintenance Facility aboard Space Station Freedom (SSF) was evaluated. A KC-135 parabolic flight test was performed for this purpose. The flights followed the standard 40 parabola profile with 20 to 25 seconds of near-zero gravity in each parabola. A protocol was prepared to evaluate the prototype device in several regulator modes (or suction force), using three fluids of varying viscosity, and using either continuous or intermittent suction. It was felt that a matrixed approach would best approximate the range of utilization anticipated for medical suction on SSF. The protocols were performed in one-gravity in a lab setting to familiarize the team with procedures and techniques. Identical steps were performed aboard the KC-135 during parabolic flight
