Sequential Complexity as a Descriptor for Musical Similarity
We propose string compressibility as a descriptor of temporal structure in
audio, for the purpose of determining musical similarity. Our descriptors are
based on computing track-wise compression rates of quantised audio features,
using multiple temporal resolutions and quantisation granularities. To verify
that our descriptors capture musically relevant information, we incorporate our
descriptors into similarity rating prediction and song year prediction tasks.
We base our evaluation on a dataset of 15500 track excerpts of Western popular
music, for which we obtain 7800 web-sourced pairwise similarity ratings. To
assess the agreement among similarity ratings, we perform an evaluation under
controlled conditions, obtaining a rank correlation of 0.33 between intersected
sets of ratings. Combined with bag-of-features descriptors, we obtain
performance gains of 31.1% and 10.9% for similarity rating prediction and song
year prediction. For both tasks, analysis of selected descriptors reveals that
representing features at multiple time scales benefits prediction accuracy.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 8 tables. Accepted versio
The Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey (MGPS-2): Compact Source Catalogue
We present the first data release from the second epoch Molonglo Galactic
Plane Survey (MGPS-2). MGPS-2 was carried out with the Molonglo Observatory
Synthesis Telescope at a frequency of 843 MHz and with a restoring beam of 45
arcsec x 45 arcsec cosec(dec), making it the highest resolution large scale
radio survey of the southern Galactic plane. It covers the range |b| < 10 deg
and 245 deg < l < 365 deg and is the Galactic counterpart to the Sydney
University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS) which covers the whole southern sky with
dec 10 deg).
In this paper we present the MGPS-2 compact source catalogue. The catalogue
has 48,850 sources above a limiting peak brightness of 10 mJy/beam. Positions
in the catalogue are accurate to 1 arcsec - 2 arcsec. A full catalogue
including extended sources is in preparation. We have carried out an analysis
of the compact source density across the Galactic plane and find that the
source density is not statistically higher than the density expected from the
extragalactic source density alone.
We also present version 2.0 of the SUMSS image data and catalogue which are
now available online. The data consists of 629 4.3 deg x 4.3 deg mosaic images
covering the 8100 deg^2 of sky with dec 10 deg. The
catalogue contains 210,412 radio sources to a limiting peak brightness of 6
mJy/beam at dec -50 deg. We describe the
updates and improvements made to the SUMSS cataloguing process.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, to be published in MNRAS Note that Figures 8 and

Membrane-type 1 matrix metalloproteinase-mediated progelatinase A activation in non-tumorigenic and tumorigenic humaneratinocytes
Elevated expression of type IV collagenases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) has been strongly correlated with tumour progression and metastasis in various tumours. Here, we analysed expression and activation of these MMPs in non-tumourigenic HaCaT cells and the malignant HaCaT variant II-4 rt. In monolayer cultures, both cell types secreted latent MMP-2 (proMMP-2) in comparable amounts, while MMP-9 production was clearly higher in II-4 rt cells. Upon contact with fibrillar collagen type I the malignant II-4 rt cells, but not the HaCaT cells, gained the capability to activate proMMP-2. This process is shown to be membrane-associated and mediated by MT1-MMP. Surprisingly, all membrane preparations from either HaCaT cells or II-4 rt cells grown as monolayers, as well as within collagen gels, contained considerable amounts of active MT1-MMP. However, within collagen gels HaCaT cells showed significantly higher TIMP-2 levels compared to II-4 rt cells. This indicates that TIMP-2 might play a central role for MT1-MMP-mediated gelatinolytic activity. Indeed, collagen type I-induced MT1-MMP-mediated proMMP-2 activation by II-4 rt membranes could be completely abolished by an excess of TIMP-2. In conclusion, our data suggest that MT1-MMP-mediated proMMP-2 activation might be associated with malignant progression of epidermal tumour cells. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

Compact continuum source-finding for next generation radio surveys
We present a detailed analysis of four of the most widely used radio source
finding packages in radio astronomy, and a program being developed for the
Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The four
packages; SExtractor, SFind, IMSAD and Selavy are shown to produce source
catalogues with high completeness and reliability. In this paper we analyse the
small fraction (~1%) of cases in which these packages do not perform well. This
small fraction of sources will be of concern for the next generation of radio
surveys which will produce many thousands of sources on a daily basis, in
particular for blind radio transients surveys. From our analysis we identify
the ways in which the underlying source finding algorithms fail. We demonstrate
a new source finding algorithm Aegean, based on the application of a Laplacian
kernel, which can avoid these problems and can produce complete and reliable
source catalogues for the next generation of radio surveys.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Successful Treatment of a Panniculitis-Like Primary Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma of the α/β Type with Bexarotene
Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTL) of the α/β type is a rare subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the skin. Although these tumors usually run an indolent course, disease-related morbidity is often severe. Clinical findings include subcutaneous tumors located on the extremities or trunk, often accompanied by systemic symptoms like fever or fatigue. Due to the low incidence of SPTL, no standardized therapy has been defined so far and there is currently no curative therapy available for this type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. By sharing our experience with bexarotene therapy, we present a safe and potentially improved treatment for patients with SPTL. In the case presented, bexarotene was able to induce remission even after recurrence of disease
Glassy timescale divergence and anomalous coarsening in a kinetically constrained spin chain
We analyse the out of equilibrium behavior of an Ising spin chain with an
asymmetric kinetic constraint after a quench to a low temperature T. In the
limit T\to 0, we provide an exact solution of the resulting coarsening process.
The equilibration time exhibits a `glassy' divergence \teq=\exp(const/T^2)
(popular as an alternative to the Vogel-Fulcher law), while the average domain
length grows with a temperature dependent exponent, \dbar ~ t^{T\ln 2}. We show
that the equilibration time \teq also sets the timescale for the linear
response of the system at low temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, includes two eps figures. Proof of energy barrier
