    Visualization for Citizen Participation: User Perceptions on a Mainstreamed Online Participatory Tool and Its Usefulness for Climate Change Planning

    Citizen participation is obligated in municipal planning but is often criticized because of its inadequate implementation. To increase the usefulness of citizen participation and the involvement of underrepresented groups, online participatory tools (OPTs) have attracted attention, in particular, on topics related to climate change. Although many OPTs have been developed and are becoming more widely used, assessments of their usefulness in real-world planning remain scarce. This study aimed to disentangle prospects and pitfalls of this still novel way of practicing citizen dialogue. Specifically, we apply criteria derived from related literatures to assess a mainstreamed OPT in Norrkoping, Sweden. The CityPlanner (TM) tool was discussed with citizens and planners using focus group methodology and semi-structured individual interviews. Moreover, citizen contributions in four applications of the OPT were analyzed. The results reveal that the biggest challenges for citizen dialogues on planning in general and on climate change, in particular, appear not mainly rooted in the technical functions of the OPT. Rather, problems lie in (i) the lack of municipal strategy for citizen participation and in applying OPTs, (ii) a disparagement in citizens abilities to contribute to forming robust and sustainable cities, and (iii) in diverging views about the role of citizen contributions. This is reflected in how the OPT is used. While the examined OPT shows potential, the results indicate that visualized contexts for planning might be too scant to be entirely meaningful, and it lacks mechanisms for feedback.     Four Different Finger Positions and Their Effects on Hemodynamic Changes during Chest Compression in Asphyxiated Neonatal Piglets

    Background: The Neonatal Life Support Consensus on Science With Treatment Recommendations states that chest compressions (CC) be performed preferably with the 2-thumb encircling technique. The aim of this study was to compare the hemodynamic effects of four different finger positions during CC in a piglet model of neonatal asphyxia. Methods: Seven asphyxiated post-transitional piglets were randomized to CC with 2-thumb-, 2-finger-, knocking-fingers-, and over-the-head 2-thumb-techniques for one minute at each technique. CC superimposed with sustained inflations were performed manually. Results: Seven newborn piglets (age 0–4 days, weight 2.0–2.1 kg) were included in the study. The mean (SD) slope rise of carotid blood flow was significantly higher with the 2-thumb-technique and over-the-head 2-thumb-technique (118 (45) mL/min/s and 121 (46) mL/min/s, respectively) compared to the 2-finger-technique and knocking-finger-technique (75 (48) mL/min/s and 71 (67) mL/min/s, respectively) (p min (as an expression of left ventricular function) was significantly lower with the 2-thumb-technique, with −1052 (369) mmHg/s, compared to −568 (229) mmHg/s and −578(180) mmHg/s (both p = 0.012) with the 2-finger-technique and knocking-finger-technique, respectively. Conclusion: The 2-thumb-technique and the over-the-head 2-thumb-technique resulted in improved slope rises of carotid blood flow and dp/dtmin during chest compression

    Developing transformative capacity through systematic assessments and visualization of urban climate transitions

    Transforming cities into low-carbon, resilient, and sustainable places will require action encompassing most segments of society. However, local governments struggle to overview and assess all ongoing climate activities in a city, constraining well-informed decision-making and transformative capacity. This paper proposes and tests an assessment framework developed to visualize the implementation of urban climate transition (UCT). Integrating key transition activities and process progression, the framework was applied to three Swedish cities. Climate coordinators and municipal councillors evaluated the visual UCT representations. Results indicate that their understanding of UCT actions and implementation bottlenecks became clearer, making transition more governable. To facilitate UCT, involving external actors and shifting priorities between areas were found to be key. The visual UCT representations improved system awareness and memory, building local transformative capacity. The study recommends systematic assessment and visualization of process progression as a promising method to facilitate UCT governance, but potentially also broader sustainability transitions.Funding agencies: Norrkoping Research and Development Foundation; Swedish Research Council Formas [942-2015-106]</p

    Chest Compression Rates of 90/min versus 180/min during Neonatal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: A Randomized Controlled Animal Trial

    Background: To compare chest compression (CC) rates of 90/min with 180/min and their effect on the time to return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), survival, hemodynamic, and respiratory parameters. We hypothesized that asphyxiated newborn piglets that received CC at 180/min vs. 90/min during cardiopulmonary resuscitation would have a shorter time to ROSC. Methods: Newborn piglets (n = 7/group) were anesthetized, intubated, instrumented and exposed to 45 min normocapnic hypoxia followed by asphyxia and cardiac arrest. Piglets were randomly allocated to a CC rate of 180/min or 90/min. CC was performed using an automated chest compression machine using CC superimposed with sustained inflation. Hemodynamic and respiratory parameters and applied compression force were continuously measured. Results: The mean (SD) time to ROSC was 91 (34) and 256 (97) s for CC rates of 180/min and 90/min, respectively (p = 0.08). The number of piglets that achieved ROSC was 7 (100%) and 5 (71%) with 180/min and 90/min CC rates, respectively (p = 0.46). Hemodynamic parameters (i.e., diastolic and mean blood pressure, carotid blood flow, stroke volume, end-diastolic volume, left ventricular contractile function) and respiratory parameters (i.e., minute ventilation, peak inflation and peak expiration flow) were all improved with a CC rate of 180/min. Conclusion: Time to ROSC and hemodynamic and respiratory parameters were not statistical significant different between CC rates of 90/min and 180/min. Higher CC rates during neonatal resuscitation warrant further investigation

    Synergies and Trade-Offs for Sustainable Food Production in Sweden : An Integrated Approach

    The production of food can have large impacts on sustainable development in relation to various socio-ecological dimensions, like climate change, the environment, animal welfare, livestock epidemiology, and the economy. To achieve a sustainable food production system in Sweden, an integrated approach that considers all five of these dimensions, and all parts of the food production chain, is necessary. This paper systematically reviewed the literature related to food production in Sweden, especially in association with resource distribution and recycling logistics, and identified potential sustainability interventions and assessed their effects according to the five dimensions. Participation of stakeholders across the food production chain contributed with the focus of the literature search and subsequent synthesis. In general, there were synergies between the sustainability interventions and their effect on climate change and the environment, while there often were trade-offs between effects on the economy and the other dimensions. Few interventions considered effects on animal welfare or livestock epidemiology and few studies dealt with resource distribution and recycling logistics. This indicates that there is a need for future research that considers this in particular, as well as research that considers the whole food production chain and all dimensions at once, and investigates effects across multiple scales.Funding Agencies|FORMAS the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development [2017-02018]</p
