Density-Matrix approach to a Strongly Coupled Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensate
The time evolution equations for average values of population and relative
phase of a strongly coupled two component BEC is derived analytically. The two
components are two hyper-fine states coupled by an external laser that drives
fast Rabi oscillations between these states. Specifically, this derivation
incorporates the two-mode model proposed in [1] for the strongly coupled
hyper-fine states of Rb. The fast Rabi cycle is averaged out and rate equations
are derived that represents the slow dynamics of the system. These include the
collapse and revival of Rabi oscillations and their subsequent dependence on
detuning and trap displacement as reported in experiments of [1]. A proposal to
create stable vortices is also given.Comment: 11 Latex pages, 2 figures (Figure 3 was removed and the text chnaged

Measurement-induced Squeezing of a Bose-Einstein Condensate
We discuss the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate during its
nondestructive imaging. A generalized Lindblad superoperator in the condensate
master equation is used to include the effect of the measurement. A continuous
imaging with a sufficiently high laser intensity progressively drives the
quantum state of the condensate into number squeezed states. Observable
consequences of such a measurement-induced squeezing are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PR
Nonlinear interference in a mean-field quantum model
Using similar nonlinear stationary mean-field models for Bose-Einstein
Condensation of cold atoms and interacting electrons in a Quantum Dot, we
propose to describe the original many-particle ground state as a one-particle
statistical mixed state of the nonlinear eigenstates whose weights are provided
by the eigenstate non-orthogonality. We search for physical grounds in the
interpretation of our two main results, namely, quantum-classical nonlinear
transition and interference between nonlinear eigenstates.Comment: RevTeX (pdfLaTeX), 7 pages with 5 png-figures include
Effects of Extended Grape Ripening With or Without Must and Wine Alcohol Manipulations on Cabernet Sauvignon Wine Sensory Characteristics
This study attempts to clarify the consequences for wine flavour that result from harvesting fruit atdifferent maturities. The grapes were harvested from a single vineyard in Paso Robles, and the samplesspanned maturity levels from what would be considered early harvest (about 21 °Brix) to late harvest(about 30 °Brix). The wines made from these grapes were analysed using descriptive analysis to investigatethe relationships between fruit maturity and wine sensory attributes. In addition, musts and/or wines werechaptalised and/or fortified or watered back to determine the effect of these manipulations on wine sensoryproperties. This research showed that the sensory attributes of wines made from grapes at different stagesof maturation, from about 20 to 30 °Brix, varied in a systematic fashion. Specifically, the wines made fromthe grapes with a lower Brix were more sour and had more fresh vegetative flavours, while the wines madefrom the fruit with a high Brix were more hot and bitter and in some cases had more dark fruit flavoursand sweetness. Fortifying wines made from lower Brix musts changed the perceptions of the wine sensoryprofiles more than chaptalising the musts. On the other hand, adding water to higher °Brix musts to mimic24 °Brix musts resulted in wines with similar sensory profiles to wines made from grapes picked at a sugarcontent of close to 24 °Brix. This study shows that wine sensory attributes differ more when grapes arepicked early in ripening rather than after 24 °Brix
Dissipative dynamics of vortex arrays in anisotropic traps
We discuss the dissipative dynamics of vortex arrays in trapped
Bose-condensed gases and analyze the lifetime of the vortices as a function of
trap anisotropy and the temperature. In particular, we distinguish the two
regimes of the dissipative dynamics, depending on the relative strength of the
mutual friction between the vortices and the thermal component, and the
friction of the thermal particles on the trap anisotropy. We study the effects
of heating of the thermal cloud by the escaping vortices on the dynamics of the
system.Comment: RevTeX, 8 pages, 3 eps figure
Two-component Bose gas in an optical lattice at single-particle filling
The Bose-Hubbard model of a two-fold degenerate Bose gas is studied in an
optical lattice with one particle per site and virtual tunneling to empty and
doubly-occupied sites. An effective Hamiltonian for this system is derived
within a continued-fraction approach. The ground state of the effective model
is studied in mean-field approximation for a modulated optical lattice. A
dimerized mean-field state gives a Mott insulator whereas the lattice without
modulations develops long-range correlated phase fluctuations due to a
Goldstone mode. This result is discussed in comparison with the superfluid and
the Mott-insulating state of a single-component hard-core Bose.Comment: 11 page
Coupled Bose-Einstein condensate: Collapse for attractive interaction
We study the collapse in a coupled Bose-Einstein condensate of two types of
bosons 1 and 2 under the action of a trap using the time-dependent
Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The system may undergo collapse when one, two or
three of the scattering lengths for scattering of boson with ,
, are negative representing an attractive interaction. Depending
on the parameters of the problem a single or both components of the condensate
may experience collapse.Comment: 5 pages and 9 figures, small changes mad
Collective dynamics of internal states in a Bose gas
Theory for the Rabi and internal Josephson effects in an interacting Bose gas
in the cold collision regime is presented. By using microscopic transport
equation for the density matrix the problem is mapped onto a problem of
precession of two coupled classical spins. In the absence of an external
excitation field our results agree with the theory for the density induced
frequency shifts in atomic clocks. In the presence of the external field, the
internal Josephson effect takes place in a condensed Bose gas as well as in a
non-condensed gas. The crossover from Rabi oscillations to the Josephson
oscillations as a function of interaction strength is studied in detail.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figure
Symmetric-Asymmetric transition in mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates
We propose a new kind of quantum phase transition in phase separated mixtures
of Bose-Einstein condensates. In this transition, the distribution of the two
components changes from a symmetric to an asymmetric shape. We discuss the
nature of the phase transition, the role of interface tension and the phase
diagram. The symmetric to asymmetric transition is the simplest quantum phase
transition that one can imagine. Careful study of this problem should provide
us new insight into this burgeoning field of discovery.Comment: 6 pages, 3 eps figure
Interferometric detection of a single vortex in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate
Using two radio frequency pulses separated in time we perform an amplitude
division interference experiment on a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate. The
presence of a quantized vortex, which is nucleated by stirring the condensate
with a laser beam, is revealed by a dislocation in the fringe pattern.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
