    Litter as a source of habitat islands on deepwater muddy bottoms

    Certain types of marine litter, usually considered as pollutants, may also be a resource, serving as artificial reefs on sedimentary bottoms. In order to study this aspect, marine debris was collected by bottom trawl from muddy bottoms (depths of 45-700m) in the waters around the Maltese islands, during July 2005. The associated fauna was identified and quantified. Litter was found to support a higher abundance of organisms than the surrounding sediment, but a lower species richness. However, the suite of epifaunal species on the debris was different from the infauna of the surrounding substratum. Thus litter was found to increase the overall biodiversity of particular areas.peer-reviewe

    Evaluation of the Induction of Immune Memory following Infant Immunisation with Serogroup C Neisseria meningitidis Conjugate Vaccines - Exploratory Analyses within a Randomised Controlled Trial

    Aim: We measured meningococcal serogroup C (MenC)-specific memory B-cell responses in infants by Enzyme-Linked Immunospot (ELISpot) following different MenC conjugate vaccine schedules to investigate the impact of priming on immune memory. Methods: Infants aged 2 months were randomised to receive 1 or 2 doses of MenC-CRM197 at 3 or 3 and 4 months, 1 dose of MenC-TT at 3 months, or no primary MenC doses. All children received a Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)-MenC booster at 12 months. Blood was drawn at 5, 12, 12 months +6 days and 13 months of age. Results: Results were available for 110, 103, 76 and 44 children from each group respectively. Following primary immunisations, and prior to the 12-month booster, there were no significant differences between 1- or 2-dose primed children in the number of MenC memory B-cells detected. One month following the booster, children primed with 1 dose MenC-TT had more memory B-cells than children primed with either 1-dose (p = 0.001) or 2-dose (p<0.0001) MenC-CRM197. There were no differences in MenC memory B-cells detected in children who received 1 or 2 doses of MenC-CRM197 in infancy and un-primed children. Conclusions: MenC-specific memory B-cell production may be more dependent on the type of primary vaccine used than the number of doses administered. Although the mechanistic differences between MenC-CRM197 and MenC-TT priming are unclear, it is possible that structural differences, including the carrier proteins, may underlie differential interactions with B- and T-cell populations, and thus different effects on various memory B-cell subsets. A MenC-TT/Hib-MenC-TT combination for priming/boosting may offer an advantage in inducing more persistent antibody.peer-reviewe

    Distribution and density of discarded limestone slabs used in the traditional Maltese lampuki fishery

    The Maltese Coryphaena hippurus fishery employs fish aggregating devices anchored to the seabed by limestone slabs that are discarded after each season. It is estimated that more than 15,000 such slabs are deposited on the seabed each year, thus the number of limestone blocks left on the seabed by the decades-old fishery must be quite high. This study attempted to estimate the distribution and abundance of limestone slabs in the sea around Malta. The abundance of slabs was much less than expected, implying that a mechanism that gradually removes slabs from the surface of the seabed is operating in the area studied.peer-reviewe

    Association of operative approach with postoperative outcomes in neonates undergoing surgical repair of esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula

    Introduction: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is gaining traction as a first-line approach to repair congenital anomalies. This study aims to evaluate outcomes for neonates undergoing open versus MIS repairs for esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF). Methods: Neonates undergoing EA/TEF repair from 2013-2020 were identified using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatric database. Proportions of operative approach (open vs. MIS) over time were analyzed. A propensity score-matched analysis using preoperative characteristics was performed and outcomes were compared including composite morbidity and reintervention rates (overall, major [thoracoscopy, thoracotomy], and minor [chest/feeding tube placement, endoscopy]) between operative approaches. Pearson’s chi-square or Fisher’s exact test were used as appropriate. Results: We identified 1738 neonates who underwent EA/TEF repair. MIS utilization increased over time (p=0.019). Pre-match, neonates undergoing open repair were more likely premature, lower weight, and higher ASA class. Post-match, the groups were similar and included 183 neonates per group. MIS repair was associated with longer median operative time (206 vs. 180 minutes, p\u3c0.001), increased overall reintervention rates (MIS 9.8% vs. open 3.3%, p=0.011), and increased minor reintervention rates (MIS 7.7% vs. open 2.2%, p=0.016). There were no differences in composite morbidity (MIS 20.2% vs. open 26.8%, p=0.14) or major reinterventions (MIS 2.2% vs. open 1.1%, p=0.41). Discussion: MIS is gaining traction as a first-line approach for neonates with EA/TEF but appears to be associated with a higher rate of reinterventions. Further studies evaluating MIS approaches for the repair of EA/TEF are needed to better define short and long-term outcomes to optimize patient selection

    A pragmatic approach to regulating artificial intelligence : a technology regulator's perspective

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the regulation thereof is a topic that is increasingly being discussed within various fora. Various proposals have been made in literature for defining regulatory bodies and/or related regulation. In this paper, we present a pragmatic approach for providing a technology assurance regulatory framework. To the best knowledge of the authors this work presents the first national AI technology assurance legal and regulatory framework that has been implemented by a national authority empowered through law to do so. In aim of both providing assurances where required and not stifling innovation yet supporting it, herein it is proposed that such regulation should not be mandated for all AI-based systems and that rather it should primarily provide a voluntary framework and only be mandated in sectors and activities where required and as deemed necessary by other authorities for regulated and critical areas.peer-reviewe

    ENZO: A Web Tool for Derivation and Evaluation of Kinetic Models of Enzyme Catalyzed Reactions

    We describe a web tool ENZO (Enzyme Kinetics), a graphical interface for building kinetic models of enzyme catalyzed reactions. ENZO automatically generates the corresponding differential equations from a stipulated enzyme reaction scheme. These differential equations are processed by a numerical solver and a regression algorithm which fits the coefficients of differential equations to experimentally observed time course curves. ENZO allows rapid evaluation of rival reaction schemes and can be used for routine tests in enzyme kinetics. It is freely available as a web tool, at http://enzo.cmm.ki.si

    Modelling seabed sediment physical properties and organic matter content in the Firth of Clyde

    High quality quantitative maps of seabed sedimentary physical and geochemical properties have numerous research and conservation applications, including habitat and ecosystem modelling, marine spatial planning and ecosystem service mapping. However, such maps are lacking for many ecologically and economically important marine areas. Using legacy data supplemented by measurements from recent benthic surveys, modelled hydrodynamic variables and high resolution bathymetry, quantitative maps for the top 10 cm of seabed sediment were generated via a combination of statistical and machine-learning techniques for the Firth of Clyde, a semi-enclosed coastal sea on the west coast of Scotland. The maps include sediment fractions of mud, sand and gravel, whole-sediment median grain size, sediment permeability and porosity, rates of natural seabed abrasion, and sediment particulate organic carbon and nitrogen content. Properties were mapped over an unstructured grid, so that very high resolutions were achieved close to the coastlines, where sediments may be expected to be spatially heterogeneous. Overall, the maps reveal extensive areas of very low sediment permeability coupled with low rates of natural seabed disturbance. Moreover, muddy sediments in the inner Firth of Clyde, Inchmarnock Water and the sea lochs are enriched in organic carbon and nitrogen relative to the sediments of the outer Firth of Clyde. As a demonstration of the value of these maps, the standing stock of organic carbon and nitrogen in the surficial sediments of the Clyde was calculated. The Clyde stores 3.42 and 0.33 million tonnes of organic carbon and nitrogen in the top 10 cm of seabed sediment, respectively, substantially contributing to Scotland’s coastal and shelf blue carbon stocks
