    The use of digit ratios as markers for perinatal androgen action

    Since the ratio of the second-to-fourth finger length was first proposed as a marker for prenatal androgen action in 1998, over 100 studies have been published that have either further tested the association between the digit ratio and prenatal androgens, or employed digit ratios as a marker to investigate the association between prenatal androgens and a variety of outcomes, including behavior, fertility, and disease risks. Despite the clear demand for an adult marker of prenatal androgen action and increased use of digit ratios as such a marker, its validity remains controversial. This review (1) evaluates current evidence for the relationship between digit ratios and prenatal androgens (using experimentation with animal models, amniotic testosterone, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia case-control studies), (2) describes opportunities for future validation tests, and (3) compares the potential advantages and disadvantages of digit ratio measures with more established methods for studying the effects of prenatal androgens

    Infant feeding knowledge, perceptions and practices among women with and without HIV in Johannesburg, South Africa: a survey in healthcare facilities

    BACKGROUND: South Africa has a history of low breastfeeding rates among women with and without Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). In this study, we assessed infant feeding knowledge, perceptions and practices among pregnant and postpartum women with and without HIV, in the context of changes in infant feeding and Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) guidelines. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey conducted from April 2014 to March 2015 in 10 healthcare facilities in Johannesburg, South Africa. A total of 190 pregnant and 180 postpartum women (74 and 67, respectively, were HIV positive) were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Multiple regression analyses assessed factors associated with an intention to exclusively breastfeed, and exclusive breastfeeding of infants less than six months of age. RESULTS: Women with HIV had better overall knowledge on safe infant feeding practices, both in general and in the context of HIV infection. There were however gaps in knowledge among women with and without HIV. Information from healthcare facilities was the main source of information for all groups of women in the study. A greater percentage of women without HIV 80.9% (93/115), reported an intention to exclusively breastfeed, compared to 64.9% (48/74) of women with HIV, pā€‰=ā€‰0.014. Not having HIV was positively associated with a reported intention to breastfeed, Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) 3.60, 95% CI 1.50, 8.62. Other factors associated with a reported intention to exclusively breastfeed were prior breastfeeding experience and higher knowledge scores on safe infant feeding practices in the context of HIV infection. Among postpartum women, higher scores on general knowledge of safe infant feeding practices were positively associated with reported exclusive breastfeeding, AOR 2.18, 95% CI 1.52, 3.12. Most women perceived that it was difficult to exclusively breastfeed and that cultural factors were a barrier to exclusive breastfeeding. CONCLUSIONS: While a greater proportion of women are electing to breastfeed, HIV infection and cultural factors remain an important influence on safe infant feeding practices. Healthcare workers are the main source of information, and highlight the need for accurate and consistent messaging for both women with and without HIV

    Weight change and ovarian steroid profiles in young women

    Objective: To investigate possible short-term effects of voluntary weight loss on ovarian steroid proļ¬les in young women, in light of better established long-term effects in older women. Design: We tested for an association of voluntary weight change over the course of a menstrual cycle with salivary E2 and P proļ¬les in the same menstrual cycle. Setting: Students were recruited in a college residence hall, and they provided daily saliva samples to a researcher living nearby. Patient(s): The 65 women who participated were all college students and ranged in age between 18 and 23 years. Intervention(s): None. Main Outcome Measure(s): Weight was assessed in the ļ¬rst week of the menstrual cycle and ļ¬rst week of the following menstrual cycle. Estradiol and P were measured by radioimmunoassay in daily saliva samples. Result(s): We did not detect a suppressive effect of weight loss on the overall level of either hormone. However, we did ļ¬nd evidence for more distinct follicular and luteal E2 peaks in women who gained weight. Peak luteal P also arrived about 2 days earlier in women who gained weight. Conclusion(s): This ļ¬nding adds to evidence that short-term response of ovarian function to weight loss in young women is less pronounced than long-term response in older women.AnthropologyHuman Evolutionary Biolog

    Protein Kinase C Beta II Peptide Inhibitor Elicits Robust Effects on Attenuating Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury

    Reperfusion injury contributes to myocardial tissue damage following a heart attack partly due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon cardio-angioplasty. Protein kinase C beta II (PKCĪ²II) inhibition during reperfusion with peptide inhibitor (N-myr-SLNPEWNET; PKCĪ²II-) decreases ROS release and leukocyte infiltration in rat hind-limb and myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) studies, respectively. However, the role of activating PKCĪ²II during reperfusion has not been previously determined. In this study, we hypothesize that myristoylated (myr)-PKCĪ²II- will decrease infarct size and improve post-reperfused cardiac function compared to untreated controls, whereas PKCĪ²II peptide activator (N-myr-SVEIWD; myr-PKCĪ²II+) will show no improvement compared to control. Myristoylation of PKCĪ²II peptides facilitate their entry into the cell in order to affect PKCĪ²II activity by either augmenting or attenuating its translocation to cell membrane proteins, such as NOX-2. Isolated perfused rat hearts were subjected to global I(30min)/R(50min) and infused with myr-PKCĪ²II+ (20Ī¼M; n=9), myr-PKCĪ²II- (20ĀµM; n=8), or plasma (control; n=9) at reperfusion. Hearts were frozen (-20oC), sectioned and stained using 1% triphenyltetrazolium chloride to differentiate necrotic tissue. The measurement of Left ventricular (LV) cardiac function was determined using a pressure transducer and infarct size was calculated as percent dead tissue vs. total heart tissue weight. Myr-PKCĪ²II- significantly improved LV end-diastolic pressure 37Ā±7 mmHg compared to control (58Ā±5; p\u3c0.01) and myr-PKCĪ²II+ (58Ā±4; p\u3c0.01). Myr-PKCĪ²II- significantly reduced infarct size to 14Ā±3% compared to control (26Ā±5%; p\u3c0.01), while myr-PKCĪ²II+ (25Ā±3%) showed no difference. The data indicate that myr-PKCĪ²II- may be a putative treatment to reduce myocardial reperfusion injury when given to heart attack patients during cardio-angioplasty. Future studies are planned to determine infarct size by Image J analysis

    Prospective surveillance for influenza was performed during the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. Oseltamivir was administered to patients with influenzalike illness and confirmed influenza, while their close contacts were given oseltamivir prophylactically. Influenza A/B was diagnosed in 36 of 188 patients, including 13 athletes. Prompt management limited the spread of this outbreak

    Quantum state preparation and macroscopic entanglement in gravitational-wave detectors

    Long-baseline laser-interferometer gravitational-wave detectors are operating at a factor of 10 (in amplitude) above the standard quantum limit (SQL) within a broad frequency band. Such a low classical noise budget has already allowed the creation of a controlled 2.7 kg macroscopic oscillator with an effective eigenfrequency of 150 Hz and an occupation number of 200. This result, along with the prospect for further improvements, heralds the new possibility of experimentally probing macroscopic quantum mechanics (MQM) - quantum mechanical behavior of objects in the realm of everyday experience - using gravitational-wave detectors. In this paper, we provide the mathematical foundation for the first step of a MQM experiment: the preparation of a macroscopic test mass into a nearly minimum-Heisenberg-limited Gaussian quantum state, which is possible if the interferometer's classical noise beats the SQL in a broad frequency band. Our formalism, based on Wiener filtering, allows a straightforward conversion from the classical noise budget of a laser interferometer, in terms of noise spectra, into the strategy for quantum state preparation, and the quality of the prepared state. Using this formalism, we consider how Gaussian entanglement can be built among two macroscopic test masses, and the performance of the planned Advanced LIGO interferometers in quantum-state preparation

    Michael Goveā€™s war on professional historical expertise : conservative curriculum reform, extreme Whig history and the place of imperial heroes in modern multicultural Britain

    Six years of continuously baiting his opponents within the history profession eventually amounted to little where it mattered most. UK Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, finally backtracked in 2013 on his plans to impose a curriculum for English schools based on a linear chronology of the achievements of British national heroes. His ā€˜history as celebrationā€™ curriculum was designed to instil pride amongst students in a supposedly shared national past, but would merely have accentuated how many students in modern multicultural Britain fail to recognise themselves in what is taught in school history lessons. Now that the dust has settled on Goveā€™s tenure as Secretary of State, the time is right for retrospective analysis of how his plans for the history curriculum made it quite so far. How did he construct an ā€˜ideologicalā€™ conception of expertise which allowed him to go toe-to-toe for so long with the ā€˜professionalā€™ expertise of academic historians and history teachers? What does the content of this ideological expertise tell us about the politics of race within Conservative Party curriculum reforms? This article answers these questions to characterise Gove as a ā€˜whig historianā€™ of a wilfully extreme nature in his attachment to imperial heroes as the best way to teach national history in modern multicultural Britain
