    Nutritional labelling in restaurants : whose responsibility is it anyway?

    To explore consumer attitudes towards the potential implementation of compulsory nutritional labelling on commercial restaurant menus in the UK. This research was approached from the perspective of the consumer with the intention of gaining an insight into personal attitudes towards nutritional labelling on commercial restaurant menus and three focus groups consisting of participants with distinctly differing approaches to eating outside the home were conducted. The research suggests that while some consumers might welcome the introduction of nutritional labelling it is context dependent and without an appropriate education the information provided may not be understood anyway. The issue of responsibility for public health is unresolved although some effort could be made to provide greater nutritional balance in menus. Following this research up with a quantitative investigation, the ideas presented could be verified with the opinions of a larger sample. For example, a study into the reactions to nutritionally labelled menus in various restaurant environments. Consumers would react differently to the information being presented in a fine-dining restaurant than they would in popular catering or fast food. The obstacles faced by restaurants to provide not only nutritional information, but attractive, nutritious food are significant. Prior to this research there were few, if any, studies into the effects of food labelling on consumer choice behaviour in the context of hospitality management

    Love motels : oriental phenomenon or emergent sector?

    This study explores the 'Love Motel' concept by examining the changing attitude of consumers in Taiwan. This will increase knowledge of the sector and define love motels. The literature review charts the development of Taiwanese love motels from a duel origin; American Motels and Japanese 'Love Hotels.' This is followed by an empirical qualitative study consisting of a two-stage collection strategy: focus groups of hospitality and tourism professionals to gather a wide range of opinions on the subject area followed by semi-structured interviews with consumers. The findings split into three interrelated areas: growth of Taiwanese love motels due to more liberal attitudes towards sexual practice; a change in the public perception of motels due to increased standards and an increased satisfaction with the personal consumption experience; these hotels are designed for couples. The empirical element of this study is an exploration of consumer experience in Taiwanese love hotels. Due to the sensitive nature of some of the data that was gathered a qualitative approach has been adopted. The sexual associations with this product appear almost coincidental. If the love motel product is considered in its purest form it is simply a hotel product that provides complete anonymity for its guests. Therefore, despite its application in South East Asia, this hospitality concept has potential to be applied in a variety of guises. The phenomenon of 'Love Hotels' is absent from hospitality management literature; this paper begins to fill that gap by beginning a discussion on this possibly controversial sector

    Halo detection via large-scale Bayesian inference

    We present a proof-of-concept of a novel and fully Bayesian methodology designed to detect halos of different masses in cosmological observations subject to noise and systematic uncertainties. Our methodology combines the previously published Bayesian large-scale structure inference algorithm, HADES, and a Bayesian chain rule (the Blackwell-Rao Estimator), which we use to connect the inferred density field to the properties of dark matter halos. To demonstrate the capability of our approach we construct a realistic galaxy mock catalogue emulating the wide-area 6-degree Field Galaxy Survey, which has a median redshift of approximately 0.05. Application of HADES to the catalogue provides us with accurately inferred three-dimensional density fields and corresponding quantification of uncertainties inherent to any cosmological observation. We then use a cosmological simulation to relate the amplitude of the density field to the probability of detecting a halo with mass above a specified threshold. With this information we can sum over the HADES density field realisations to construct maps of detection probabilities and demonstrate the validity of this approach within our mock scenario. We find that the probability of successful of detection of halos in the mock catalogue increases as a function of the signal-to-noise of the local galaxy observations. Our proposed methodology can easily be extended to account for more complex scientific questions and is a promising novel tool to analyse the cosmic large-scale structure in observations.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures.     Distal Biceps Brachii Tendon Transfer for Re-establishing Extrinsic Finger Function: Feasibility Study in Cadavers

    Purpose To determine the anatomic feasibility of transferring the biceps brachii tendon into either the extensor digitorum communis (EDC) or flexor digitorum profundus (FDP), determine the excursion imparted to EDC and FDP tendons after transfer, and compare the work capacity of the cadaver biceps to previously published data on the biceps as well as the recipient muscles by calculating the physiologic cross-sectional area (PCSA). Methods Four fresh-frozen cadaver shoulder-elbow-wrist specimens were used to measure tendon excursion that can be obtained with transfer of the distal biceps tendon into either the EDC or FDP. Two cadavers had distal biceps-to-EDC transfer performed, and the other 2 had distal biceps-to-FDP performed. Passive ranging of each elbow from flexion to extension and active loading at 90° of elbow flexion were then performed on each specimen to determine tendon excursion. An analysis of the PCSA of the biceps muscle was performed on each specimen. Results Distal biceps-to-EDC transfer resulted in an average of 24 mm of tendon excursion with passive loading, and 24 mm of tendon excursion with active loading. Distal biceps-to-FDP transfer resulted in an average of 24 mm of tendon excursion with passive loading, and 24 mm of tendon excursion with active loading. The average PCSA was 3.6 cm2. Conclusions Transfer of the distal biceps tendon into the EDC or FDP is anatomically feasible and provides roughly 24 mm of tendon excursion to the tendon units. The PCSA in the specimens used is slightly lower than other published data; it closely approximates the PCSA of the EDC, but is only half of the PCSA of the FDP in previously published data

    Trends in microfluidic systems for in situ chemical analysis of natural waters

    Spatially and temporally detailed measurement of ocean, river and lake chemistry is key to fully understanding the biogeochemical processes at work within them. To obtain these valuable data, miniaturised in situ chemical analysers have recently become an attractive alternative to traditional manual sampling, with microfluidic technology at the forefront of recent advances. In this short critical review we discuss the role, operation and application of in situ microfluidic analysers to measure biogeochemical parameters in natural waters. We describe recent technical developments, most notably how pumping technology has evolved to allow long-term deployments, and describe how they have been deployed in real-world situations to yield detailed, scientifically useful data. Finally, we discuss the technical challenges that still remain and the key obstacles that must be negotiated if these promising systems are to be widely adopted and used, for example, in large environmental sensor networks and on low-power underwater vehicles

    We prove a generalized version of the no-broadcasting theorem, applicable to essentially \emph{any} nonclassical finite-dimensional probabilistic model satisfying a no-signaling criterion, including ones with ``super-quantum'' correlations. A strengthened version of the quantum no-broadcasting theorem follows, and its proof is significantly simpler than existing proofs of the no-broadcasting theorem.Comment: 4 page
