Axisymmetric Stationary Solutions as Harmonic Maps

We present a method for generating exact solutions of Einstein equations in vacuum using harmonic maps, when the spacetime possesses two commutating Killing vectors. This method consists in writing the axisymmetric stationry Einstein equations in vacuum as a harmonic map which belongs to the group SL(2,R), and decomposing it in its harmonic "submaps". Comportamento da erva-sal (Atriplex nummularia) irrigada com água de alta salinidade.

Com o objetivo de avaliar o seu comportamento - em termos de rendimento e de retirada de sais dosolo, quando irrigada com água de alta salinidade - a erva-sal (Atriplex nummularia) foi cultivada, durante um ano, nos campos da estação Experimental da Embrapa Semi-Árido. As plantas foram irrigadas com efluentes do tanque de criação de Tilápia (Oriochromis sp.) e com água de poço, de concentração salina média de 10, 11 dS m-1. Cada planta recebeu 225 litros de água por semana, aplicada de uma só vez, durante 43 semanas. A salinidade média do perfil era de 0,40 dS m-1 antes de iniciar a irrigação das plantas. Depois da colheita das plantas, a salinidade do perfil de solo foi se 4,97 dS m-1. A produtividade da erva-sal foi de 18,92 t ha -1 ano de matéria seca. A erva-sal apresentou um grande potencial de extração de sais do perfil de solo. Neste experimento a planta conseguiu extrair 3,0 t ha -1 ano. Mais estudos são necessários para avaliar o comportamento da planta com lâminas d' águas maiores e menores à usada neste trabalho

Vector field and rotational curves in dark galactic halos

We study equations of a non-gauge vector field in a spherically symmetric static metric. The constant vector field with a scale arrangement of components: the time component about the Planck mass m_{Pl} and the radial component about M suppressed with respect to the Planck mass, serves as a source of metric reproducing flat rotation curves in dark halos of spiral galaxies, so that the velocity of rotation v_0 is determined by the hierarchy of scales: \sqrt{2} v_0^2= M/m_{Pl}, and M\sim 10^{12} GeV. Viability of wall-embedded tag antenna for ultra-wideband real-time suitcase localisation

WOS:000335152600007 (Nº de Acesso Web of Science)Viability of a conformal single-layer monopole antenna is studied for a wall-embedded tag in an ultra-wideband (UWB) suitcase localisation application based on impulse radio UWB. The performance of the embedded antenna is simulated and confirmed experimentally in real-time localisation (RTL) experiments carried out in a cluttered laboratory environment. Evaluation in the main planes shows average suitcase positioning error around 8 cm for worst-case conditions. RTL tests are made when the suitcase is empty, when it is filled with common travelling items and also when it is shadowed by a second suitcase. A vector network analyser-based measurement set-up is used for target localisation error evaluation. Additionally, the same tests are repeated using portable commercial time-domain transceivers with similar results

5D Schwarzschild-Like Spacetimes with Arbitrary Magnetic Field

We find a new class of exact solutions of the five-dimensional Einstein equations whose corresponding four-dimensional spacetime possesses a Schwarzschild-like behavior. The electromagnetic potential depends on a harmonic function and can be choosen to be of a monopole, dipole, etc. field. The solutions are asymptotically flat and for vanishing magnetic field the four metrics are of the Schwarzschild solution. The spacetime is singular in $r=2m$ for higher multipole moments, but regular for monopoles or vanishing magnetic fields in this point. OPTIMALLY STAGGERED FINNED CIRCULAR AND ELLIPTIC TUBES IN FORCED CONVECTION

This work presents a three-dimensional (3-D) numerical and experimental geometric optimization study to maximize the total heat transfer rate between a bundle of finned tubes in a given volume and a given external flow both for circular and elliptic arrangements, for general staggered configurations. The optimization procedure started by recognizing the design limited space availability as a fixed volume constraint. The experimental results were obtained for circular and elliptic configurations with a fixed number of tubes (12), starting with an equilateral triangle configuration, which fitted uniformly into the fixed volume with a resulting maximum dimensionless tube-to-tube spacing S/2b = 1.5, where S is the actual spacing and b is the smaller ellipse semi-axis. Several experimental configurations were built by reducing the tube-to-tube spacings, identifying the optimal spacing for maximum heat transfer. Similarly, it was possible to investigate the existence of optima with respect to other two geometric degrees of freedom, i.e., tube eccentricity and fin-to-fin spacing. The results are reported for air as the external fluid in the laminar regime, for 125 and 100 Re 2b , where 2b is the ellipses smaller axis length. Circular and elliptic arrangements with the same flow obstruction cross-sectional area were compared on the basis of maximum total heat transfer. This criterion allows one to quantify the heat transfer gain in the most isolated way possible, by studying arrangements with equivalent total pressure drops independently of the tube cross section shape. This paper reports three-dimensional (3- D) numerical optimization results for finned circular and elliptic tubes arrangements, which are validated by direct comparison with experimental measurements with good agreement. Global optima with respect to tube-to-tube spacing, eccentricity and fin-tofin spacing ( 0.5 e 0.5, S/2b and 06 . 0 f for 125 and 100 Re 2b , respectively) were found and reported in general dimensionless variables. A relative heat transfer gain of up to 19% is observed in the optimal elliptic arrangement, as compared to the optimal circular one. The heat transfer gain, combined with the relative material mass reduction of up to 32% observed in the optimal elliptic arrangement in comparison to the circular one, show the elliptical arrangement has the potential for a considerably better overall performance and lower cost than the traditional circular geometry

Vector field as a quintessence partner

We derive generic equations for a vector field driving the evolution of flat homogeneous isotropic universe and give a comparison with a scalar filed dynamics in the cosmology. Two exact solutions are shown as examples, which can serve to describe an inflation and a slow falling down of dynamical ``cosmological constant'' like it is given by the scalar quintessence. Sistema de produção usando o rejeito da dessalinização de água salobra no semi-árido brasileiro.

Objetivando reduzir os impactos causados pelo rejeito da dessalinização de água salobra, no trópico semi-árido brasileiro, três alternativas de aproveitamento de água com alta salinidade, subproduto da dessalinização foram avaliadas nos campos da Estação Experimental da Embrapa Semi-Árido, em Petrolina-PE. As alternativas foram: (a) produção de tilápia rosa (Oreochromis sp); (b) produção de feno da erva-sal (Atriplex nummularia) irrigado; e (c) engorda de caprino/ovino com feno de erva-sal. A salinidade média da água usada foi de 11,38 ds/m. A tilápia atingiu o peso de 518,72 gramas em 153 dias de cultivo; o rendimento do feno da erva-sal foi de 14.900kg de matéria seca por hectare, e o ganho de peso de ovino/caprino, quando alimentado com 1,5 kg de feno da erva-sal, foi de 138 gramas/dia. Em função dos resultados obtidos com estes estudos, é possível a viabilização do uso do rejeito da dessalinização de água de poços no cristalino do semi-árido brasileiro para a geração de renda

Avaliação do Desempenho do Teste de Rastreio de Alergia Alimentar FP5® (DPC-Amerlab)

Introdução: A utilização dos testes de rastreio para detecção de IgE específica sérica para diversos alergénios tem sido discutida, sendo invariavelmente aceite a sua utilidade no que diz respeito aos aeroalergénios, não tendo sido ainda suficientemente estabelecida a eficiência dos testes correspondentes destinados à detecção de alergénios alimentares, como acontece com o FP5® da Diagnostic Products Corporation (contendo mistura de clara de ovo, leite, bacalhau, trigo,soja e amendoim). Objectivo: Avaliar o desempenho do teste FP5®, determinando a sua sensibilidade, especificidade e comparação com os métodos de detecção das correspondentes IgE específicas isoladas. Material e métodos: Foi incluída uma amostra aleatória de 54 soros de crianças com alergia alimentar e com determinações de IgE específica positivas para um ou mais dos alimentos testados pelo FP5® - grupo de estudo; foi seleccionado um grupo controlo de 27 amostras de sangue de crianças sem alergia alimentar e em que a determinação de IgE específica para todos os alimentos incluídos no painel em estudo foi negativa. Em ambos os grupos foi efectuada determinação da concentração de IgE específica sérica (kU/l) para FP5®, F1 (clara de ovo), F2 (leite), F3 (bacalhau), F4 (trigo), F13 (soja) e F14 (amendoim), pelo método de quimioluminiscência Immulite®2000. O valor de cut-off considerado foi de 0,35 kU/l. Resultados: Foram testados 81 soros encontrando-se os seguintes parâmetros do teste: sensibilidade=88,9%, especificidade =100%, valor predictivo positivo=100%, valor predictivo negativo=81,8%,eficiência=92,6%. Considerando cada uma das IgE específicas do painel, verificou-se que em todos os soros com determinações positivas para F3, F4, F13 e F14, o FP5® foi também positivo; no caso dos alergénios F1 e F2, observaram-se 3 resultados discrepantes para cada (falsos-negativos). Correlacionando os resultados do FP5® (quantitativos) e o somatório das correspondentes IgE específicas, obtivemos um coeficiente de 0.99, p<0.001. Conclusões: De acordo com os resultados obtidos, verifica-se que o teste de rastreio estudado apresenta boa sensibilidade e eficiência, eexcelente especificidade. De salientar ainda que se trata de um teste que envolve significativa rentabilização de recursos económicos, quando comparado com a determinação das correspondentes IgE específicas isoladas. Concluímos tratar-se de um método cuja utilidade poderá ser considerada na abordagem inicial do doente com suspeita de alergia alimentar IgE mediada, no âmbito dos cuidados de saúde primários

Quantum signatures of chaos in the dynamics of a trapped ion

We show how a nonlinear chaotic system, the parametrically kicked nonlinear oscillator, may be realised in the dynamics of a trapped, laser-cooled ion, interacting with a sequence of standing wave pulses. Unlike the original optical scheme [G.J.Milburn and C.A.Holmes, Phys. Rev A, 44, p4704, (1991)], the trapped ion enables strongly quantum dynamics with minimal dissipation. This should permit an experimental test of one of the quantum signatures of chaos; irregular collapse and revival dynamics of the average vibrational energy.Comment: 9 pages, 9 Postscript figures, Revtex, submitted to Phys.
